I have had bitter experiences of not been paid for assignments when I have been remote. Its either not paid completely or pair partially or delayed payments. How do you tackle such issues?
Do you take advances? Do you use escrow? or other third-party payment collection agencies?
What payment related problems do you face in working remotely and how do you tackle them?
Beyond what has been said: expect it. It helps a bit psychologically to know non-payment will happen sometimes, not to take it personally, and put yourself in a position where you focus on other fruitful things. Follow up and prompt for payment, of course. Just donโt get hung up on it.
Solution: rethink how you take payments.
I built my own payment processing system with Stripe. User signs up (selects custom plan I assigned them), adds credit card info and then itโs all good to go. It will also check that their card is still active and will notify me if anything goes wrong. Later when I get more clients I want to implement churnbuster.io 
I also default to billing weekly. So if a project is $10,000 over 10 weeks Iโll just charge them $1,000/week via Stripe. Makes things easy and keeps stress low.
Does the client see that itโs called โchurnbusterโ? Iโd love to use your product, but the naming doesnโt seem super professional to me.
The client doesnโt see it at all. The guy that runs it is super friendly, reach out to him.
Pretty much what everyone else has said, take payment upfront. For small projects (under $200) I take 100% upfront. Otherwise, itโs in smaller chunks upfront. There are some instances where Iโll work upfront for free (where I provide sample mockups), but then wonโt release the โfull final filesโ until the full payment is received.
This prevents you from having losing money from work already done. However, there are instances where the project pauses because of non-payment. Not much you can really do at this point. Usually send out a few reminders then, I โshelfโ the project until the client decides to continue.
I currently have one large project paused, and wonโt continue working until the next portion is funded. No need to continue badgering the client, I just wait until their ready again.
Always ask to get a deposit of 50% before you do anything, and ask for the rest before you give it out. If the clients are not happy with that, those are the ones you should avoid to work with.
For only clients that I can trust, I bill them after work done if the quote is not too large.
Always do half of up front and control the primary work assets if possible, if youโre doing development develop on your own servers.
Create a SOW (Statement of Work) this can be 1-2 pages and have them sign it. You want to make sure you are clear what everyone is getting and having a signed contracts means you could press them legally and this is enough to get most people to pay.

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?
I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.
If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

My interest in DN lifestyle started when half of our company have been taking 1 month for remote work @ Ko Samui. It was truly cool but we observed quite some communication challenges. Communication seemed just โriskierโ when online.

On New Yearโs Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.
I havenโt had any entry issues to any of the several countries Iโve visited after, but now Iโm applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry wonโt keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as Iโve never traveled there before, donโt know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?

Canโt work in normal cafรฉ because having clientโs laptop for security reasons, canโt use open networks. Working for R&D. Also laptop is so huge it doesnโt fit normal cafe environment because itโs far from discreet.

I just joined this community because Iโm currently in a place in life where I can live the digital nomad lifestyle and I feel like I would really be missing out if I didnโt catch this opportunity. I work fully remotely, no fixed hours, I currently live in northern Italy and I basically have no partner or kids.
So, the question isโฆ where to? I would love to hear the advice of more experienced digital nomads!
Laptop and internet is enough for me to work but I need decent internet for conferencing and I really have to put in the hours: some days are more relaxed, others Iโll have to work all day and night.
I enjoy more temperate climates, so no torrid heat or unbearable humidity, if possible.
I like decent food but Iโm very adaptable in terms of tastes: anything is fine as long as quality is good and sanitary conditions are acceptable.
I absolutely do not enjoy the club life and would just rather go hiking during the weekends and pubs (or breweries) during the evenings. Iโm a social person though and I donโt particularly enjoy places where people are too introverted (been in Seattle for four monthsโฆ the freeze is real); I really look forward to making friends or acquaintances wherever I end up.
I enjoy decent transportation so places where thereโs a viable metro system or Uber actually works would be nice.
I prefer places with a bit more of history and culture (this is one of the reasons why I absolutely loved Portugal, for example).
Iโd like to spend under $3k average per month for rent, food and going out.
For now I was thinking either:
When? Ideally I would leave anywhere from mid to late March and stay away for 2 or 3 months.

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.
Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.

Every accountant is going to tell you that you really should be keeping separate accounts for all your businesses and even projects that may one day become businesses. But in my experience setting up a new account associated with an actual business entity is a pretty annoying process involving an in-person visit to a bank branch, proof of residence in that branchโs region, etc. Has anybody seen a bank that letโs you easily create a simple business checking account online and more importantly that would let you add additional accounts and transfer funds between them?
We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.
Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.
Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?
For those constrained by their businessโ time zone, how do you manage this?
My home office is in Los Angeles โ though I could swing anything in Central/South America, Iโm looking at going to Lisbon or Chiang Mai for a bit. Both of them are >=8hrs difference potentially wreaking havoc on the work + social life + sleep split. This is a common question for nomads but there doesnโt seem to be a lot of posting on the site about it.
What do you guys think? Any Americans working in Asia or Europe that does it well? I could likely negotiate with my supervisor to work in Eastern standard if I was in Lisbon/Europe, which wouldnโt be too much of a stretch. Noon 'til 8pm. A bit more manageable than Chiang Mai or Bali.
