How do you find a travel partner?

by @shefali | 5yr  | 11 comments

I am nomad from past 1 year and i always find very difficult to find travel buddy. Local people i meet have jobs and are free on weekends only. How you guys find travel buddy or how you meet local people?

This is like a permanent challenge, unless you marry or partner someone with exactly similar work. I recently started โ€˜banjaraaโ€™ - which is a socio-nomadic community - working in the grassroots of India and other countries (later of course), based on my experiences of working in the IT as well as non-profit sector.

Do connect. I travel quite a lot. Any means.

A few ideas come to mind:

  1. Your laptop, she so sexy.
  2. Stalk people.
  3. Bring a teddy bear. LOL.

Oh on couchsurfing, there is also this group https://www.couchsurfing.com/groups/travel-companions-around-the-world. I havenโ€™t used it but it is pretty active, though I suspect again mostly by non-working travellers.

I can also highly recommend couchsurfing, I always try to attend some events wherever I go and always meet fun, interesting people. Itโ€™s also great for finding people to do short trips with, like weekend trips such as @jellyfish mentioned.

Hostels are of course a no brainer for meeting people, but a typical backpacker is unlikely to make a good travel partner for a digital nomad (although I have met a few nomads in hostels).
Another option which I plan on using more is to stay in coliving spaces. They give you instant access to a community of people and since you are living together, itโ€™s very likely for friendships to form and future travel plans to be made.

I havenโ€™t found (or even looked for) a travel buddy for the longer term, but my preferred approach to finding good company is to stay based in a place for a month or two, make friends with local residents through Couchsurfing and the like, and then go on weekend trips to nearby cities/countries with them. Itโ€™s good fun and makes for lasting friendships, and helps me not to get stuck in my AirBnB bored out of my mind during my time off work. But then, I am also only free during weekends โ€“ your post suggests that youโ€™re lucky enough to have more time to roam, so your mileage may vary. Either way, Couchsurfing is an absolute treasure trove of excellent people, in my experience.

โ€œLocal people I meetโ€ <- Thatโ€™s the problem!

Locals I hung out with in Chicago, Calcutta, or London are all based in those cities, and were highly unlikely to be interested in travel beyond a quick weekend getaway. I had more luck talking to working travellers (folks who take working vacations every couple of months), but those are harder to find in India.

Here, I suspect a better approach might be to hang out with the tourist crowd, and see where theyโ€™re headed next. I suspect my working / traveling lifestyle might be much more compatible with someone on vacation (I can code while theyโ€™re getting wasted somewhere) than someone who doesnโ€™t travel at all.

Thereโ€™s actually a site called TravBuddy.com Iโ€™ve been on for a while that has been pretty good!

Try Couchsurfing.org. Reach out and ask people to come out for drinks or coffee or lunch or whatever. Youโ€™ll find lots of people with different jobs and schedules and availabilities and interests.

I just use Tinder.

*** JUST JOKING ***

But seriously: I wouldnโ€™t have met my current boyfriend/travel partner if he hadnโ€™t chased someone else to South America (where I was) with Tinder. So I guess Tinder kind of plays into it, lol.

The โ€œThorn Tree forumโ€ has a section for meeting travel buddies.

And as @mikephilipp mentioned, hostels are a great place to meet like minded travelers! :+1:

Hi shefali,

I found it very easy to meet travel buddies within hostels only.
When I am focused on work I like to stay at airbnb and be by myself mostly though. But the most easy way to break the ice, at least for me, were hostels with good common areas where a lot of people hang out. I met people there that traveled several island of thailand along with me.

couchsurfing or craigslist may be good to meet local people - but i didnt try it out so far.
Hope that helps a bit.

Mike

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio | 11h 11 hours ago | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife | 28d 27 days ago | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo | 30d 29 days ago | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 | 1mo 1 month ago | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara | 1mo 1 month ago | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor | 2mo 1 month ago | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?
