How do you guys go about finding short term affordable housing?

by @cs340 9yr  | 14 comments

Iโ€™ve been living a nomadic lifestyle for four years, when I started it was pretty easy to find something on craigslist of someone whose apartment would be empty and they were just happy to recoup costs.

While airbnb has made it more convenient it has also driven prices up considerably. Itโ€™s hard to find much on craiglist anymore and everyone is looking to profit as much as possible on airbnb. If you are doing a long term rental you will probably pay twice as much on airbnb as you normally would if you were just doing the same apartment on CL. Iโ€™ve had lots of difficulty finding places lately, nowadays I scour Craigstlist and canโ€™t even find anyone to contact.

I takes a lot of effort, but Iโ€™ve been able to negotiate up to 50% off the listed rate on Airbnb. The key is to book 3-6 months in advance for multiple months. Iโ€™ve also had great luck renting an apartment with multiple rooms and convincing friends to travel and share costs.

I have also found sublets on asmallworld.com. Not sure if it is accepting new members though.

There is a newsletter existing (http://www.ronorp.net/zurich_en) for some cities in Switzerland and there are some offers for short therm flats and houses. Maybe this helpsโ€ฆ

FYI, AirBnB also has a (rather hidden) support for mid-term (multi-months) rental. But at least in two cases, Iโ€™ve found it easier to contact an renegotiate with owners outside of it.

Anyhow, here is their sublet search: https://www.airbnb.com/sublets

I used Airbnb. I donโ€™t have time for a lot of running around and donโ€™t to sublet a place if itโ€™s got other peopleโ€™s personal stuff in it. Even with Airbnb, I donโ€™t consider places that are a sub-let situation because I canโ€™t handle clutter.

As to cost, if it is good value to me, I donโ€™t compare to anything else. Also, I like the extra protection being with Airbnb gives. I just had a bad situation in Berlin and they stepped in and made sure I wasnโ€™t out of pocket.

In many places I just go around the city I want to live in and ask locals about available apartment or just look out for phone numbers listed on the windows of apartments. It takes more time and it is more tiring, but you can get really good deals this way. It really helps to have a local phone number.

How much are you guys able to negotiate on airbnb? I normally do but can usually just get a little bit off a really inflated rate, then you have airbnb fees and it really adds up.

How do you find the local bulletin boards and such?

Depends on the owner and for long-term I go off Airbnb or the owner has to pay my portion of the fees. Iโ€™d be paying an extra $400+/month right now if we were using Airbnb for payments. You find local stuff by asking locals. I find that going and staying at a hostel for a few days and asking the staff helps a lot.

+1 Negotiating on Airbnb is your best bet.
Particularly if you go long term.
Facebook groups were also a good strategy for me depending on your location.

Hi ZanQu,

My experience is that thereโ€™s not really ONE global group for locations.
Usually itโ€™s pretty local and will change based on your location. So for example if you go in Asia, you should have specific group targeted at Nomads whereas if you come at place like Montreal, you need to go to the local normal groups where thereโ€™s much noise and you need to watch for short-term or month-month opportunities.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Worried about English fluency when finding a job in Ireland?

in Ireland by @gonzalezveroni94 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi Nomads!

Iโ€™m Veronica, a spanish graduate of computer science. I moved to Dublin to get a job and I have an interview next week. I have a good fluency for now but I am worried I will not be able to speak to my co-workers about specific topics because I am not a native speaker. I can talk about general things but I worry my english is not good enough to talk about what I am trained in.

Does anyone else face this problem when moving to new countries? If so, how did you overcome this? Thanks!!

Finding a place in London for a month on the east side?

in London , United Kingdom by @autumnflame 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m planning to stay in London for about a month in August-September, to coincide with an industry workshop thatโ€™s happening there at the beginning of September, and would really love to find a spot in or near the Brick Lane/Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area. AirBnB seems pricy, but Iโ€™m unsure of how easy it is to get a place via SpareRoom.

Factors/Questions

  • Budget: hoping to stay under ยฃ700, willing to go up to ยฃ800 for a perfect place right near Brick Lane
  • Looking for a furnished private room in a flatshare; Iโ€™m pretty okay with a closet with a bed, so long as itโ€™s a clean, cozy closet.
  • Solo lady, so nowhere too dodgy. (My tolerance is about โ€œNew York at night in the hipster areasโ€-level. Mexico City in the historical district at night was a bit much for me.)
  • Anyone know how easy it is to get a space in SpareRoom without actually being in the city? Or am I better served getting a hostel for a few days and accommodation-hunting then? I worry about not finding a space if I put it off until Iโ€™m there, as evidenced by my thinking about this six months beforehand. :stuck_out_tongue:
  • On that note, is that a time around when it might be harder to find accommodation, like university term starting or something?
  • Is it easy enough to find a place from mid-month to mid-month, or is it mostly going to be whole months? (I guess this wouldnโ€™t be as much of a concern if itโ€™s a week-to-week.)
  • Is it easy to get a space without a local bank account? DNing and all. Cash wouldnโ€™t be an issue.
  • How is the cafe-working culture in London? Is free decent wifi and outlets a common thing in coffee shops? Iโ€™m not super-thrilled with the idea of coworking spaces; the prices feel a bit high for me, and I actually kinda like working with a bustle around me, so long as thereโ€™s power and internet. Iโ€™ll probably look into it if it turns out there arenโ€™t really a lot of cafes equipped to do that sort of thing though.
  • โ€ฆ are there any questions I should be asking or issues I should be considering?

I realize itโ€™s a lot of questions, but anything helps! Thanks!

Can you recommend an affordable virtual assistant service?

by @pralford 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m looking for a great virtual assistant service thatโ€™s affordable. I looked into Zirtual and found it to be rather pricey. Anything out there thatโ€™s more reasonable? Basically, Iโ€™m looking for a virtual assistant who can help with research efforts, fact finding, and some other work related to a large writing project.

What's your system for finding places on Airbnb?

by @kathrynoh 8yr 8 years ago  | 51 comments

Since I started travelling 6 months ago, Iโ€™ve used Airbnb a lot to find apartments. Iโ€™ve had some great experiences but enough bad ones to start wondering about the whole system. Arriving at places to find they are nothing like described, even when they have scores of glowing reviews is not good.

Even though Airbnb have done all in their power to help out when Iโ€™ve had issues, Iโ€™d rather avoid these situations in the first place. I want to arrive at a place to find itโ€™s what Iโ€™ve paid for so I can get to work rather than spend time resolving issues.

Do other people have any system for finding places on Airbnb? Do you use recommendations, send the hosts a checklist or have any other methods? Or do you just not care so long as you have a roof over your head?

What tools are there for finding good coffee shops to work in?

by @corft 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

What tools do you use to find then best coffee shops to work in when youโ€™re in a new place? Iโ€™m often somewhere for just a day and donโ€™t want to waste time hunting about for places with wifi and plugs! Hate it when I canโ€™t get work done because the place Iโ€™ve chosen is missing something vital (bathroom for example!)
