How have you dealt with bereavement when you are halfway around the world and can not make it home?

by @iamjamesrodgers 8yr  | 5 comments

I really wish I didnโ€™t have to ask this, itโ€™s such a sensitive topic to many but unfortunately Death is inevitable in our lives as we grow -

My Girlfriend and I are currently upon our first lengthy nomadic travels, and a beloved friend has had her Mother tragically and rather quickly pass away.

My Girlfriend is really struggling and feeling suffocated by the distance.

What is the best techniques to be a supportive person to a beloved friend whoโ€™s parent has just passed away while you are on the other side of the world? Or the passing of someone in general? So far weโ€™ve sent an arrangement and wrote a letter to convey our empathy for the friend and Her family -

We both just want our support to be felt and to be enough to make up for not being physically there, it would break my heart for us to be seen as non supportive in this tough time.

@kathrynoh 8yr

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Having been through bereavement and losing a parent, I found that you get almost smothered with well wishers close to the event. It can be overwhelming and smothering and, to be honest, seems like something people do to make themselves feel better rather than actually helping out.

I think itโ€™s actually better to be supportive in the longer term. Being available to listen after your friend has actually processed things is just as important.

Also, it can be difficult not being there to offer practical support but, for some people, having a friend thatโ€™s available by email or chat is also important. It can be easier to write out your feelings and thoughts rather than having to do it face to face.

Hi @kathrynoh - I really appreciate this very sound and practical advice thatโ€™s based on your personal experience. Thank you so much for sharing this and confirming that being away is only a matter of distance and not a lack of compassion.

@IAMJAMES

Sorry to hear about your situation. I too lost my Dad 8 yrs ago whilst living abroad when I was only 26. Support from friends made all the difference. Those people who could not be there made an effort to call me which had just as much of an effect as those who were there in person. Just be available and make an effort to check up on her periodically.

@aaron1096 Thank you for your kind words.

I will edit this in โŸถ But I am actually asking this question on behalf of my Girlfriend. (The friend is mutual) - My Girlfriend is much closer with the family and has really been effected by the feeling of suffocation due to the distance as we are on our first lengthy trip away from home.

We are both looking over the links to the readings you have posted.

Iโ€™m sorry to hear about your friendโ€™s loss, the death of a parent causes all sorts of emotions to arise during the bereavement process. The best advice I have is to just be a good friend. Let your friend know that you are available to talk whenever needed. If they do that, just listen to them, donโ€™t offer advice or pat responses (e.g. โ€œthey are in a better place, everything will be fine, time heals all woundsโ€, etc.). If youโ€™re looking for something specific, you can study up on some active listening or nonviolent communication skills. I hope that helps.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

Looking for somewhere to celebrate New Years in Bali! I would prefer somewhere in Kuta or nearby, but if itโ€™s worth the travel, give me your suggestions!

Not looking to spend too much money either.

Thanks =)

Is carrying around my laptop in a backpack every day safe in South America?

by @skarabox 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

Hello everyone, I usually carry my laptop in my day backpack, walk around the town in my home country (Poland) and work in coffee shops / shopping centers, other quiet places I find or like.

My question is, how would carrying around my laptop on myself every day around the town work in practice in those places in terms of safety in South America.

I prefer to travel by a city communication than taxis and like to walk around too, but my concern is that I will get blatantly robbed with a gun or knife in a side street and lose my whole backpack with a laptop.

If anyone living in those cities could share their experience about how likely this situation is to occur, as obviously being white and foreign will make me stand out in the first place.

Anyone walking around the world while working?

by @michaltakac 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Hey guys,

Is there anybody who loves walking that much? Iโ€™m thinking about this for about 3 years now, and since I finished university this year, I could possibly plan for this huge trip and start sometime next year. I have no commitments, no girlfriend, some money saved and pretty strong motivation. I like to travel low cost (couchsurfing, exploring cities by walking, cooking own meals, sleep in a tent if needed).

Small background about me: Iโ€™ve been working 5+ years (and still working) as a software engineer remotely (full-stack, web, mobile, VR), trying to not spend everything and save a little here and there (plus some index funds, mutual funds and holding few cryptocurrencies). Walking is big part of my life since itโ€™s something like meditation, great time for creative thinking, research and solving problems. Usually my daily routine involves 10-20km of walking (some in the morning, some in the evening). So far longest stretch was 55km, aiming to raise it to at least 100km during next month. Also love to track everything (Fitbit Charge 2 + Gyrosco.pe).

Iโ€™m thinking if itโ€™s possible to walk around the world in 5 years while working occasionally during mornings or evenings (own web/mobile app, writing blog) and at the same time complete a PhD in Process Control (got an offer to work with great professor on an interesting thesis using augmented reality, for which I only need a smartphone, my Macbook and ability to once in a while consult with him over phone/skype).

Anybody around Europe over the next few months?

by @paulrose 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

Hi All

Soโ€ฆ a few months ago when I was in Asia, for some reason I decided that it was gonna be too hot over the summer months and I wanted to mix it up with a few months touring Europe. So I had the idea to buy and RV and drive round for a few months.

Meet Teagan

Itโ€™s taken a few months going through the process of getting my license to drive the RV, because itโ€™s so large it wasnโ€™t covered on my standard driving license. Add to that, I had some solar panels fitted for unlimited power, and a massive satellite dish for internet wherever I go.

Iโ€™ve now got my ferry booked out of the UK for September 11th and at the moment have no plans past the first few weeks.

Has anyone on here done anything similar before? Any places recommended, or anyone around Europe over the next few months?

Iโ€™m doing about 3 months worth before heading to Vegas for NYE and around the states for a few months after that before back to Asia for a bit.

How to get around blocked credit card transactions?

by @nomadaccountant 7yr 7 years ago  | 15 comments

it seems like Visa have gotten more tight recently and itโ€™s touch and go whether each transaction will go through. Sometimes it does but often now I am getting declined. The bank knows my locations but in the background Visa seem to be blocking a lot regardless and they are harder to notify. I am using paypal where possible because it doesnโ€™t get blocked, but thatโ€™s only good for a limited number of places.
Anyone else getting worn out by the payment approval games?

Search/review site for Co-Working spaces around the world?

by @gnefkow 7yr 7 years ago  | 7 comments

Hostelworld for hostels,
Nomadlist for general locations,
Yelp for food (among other things)
Trip Advisor for activitiesโ€ฆ

Is there a website where a community of people can rate and review co-working spaces around the world? Iโ€™m in a nice place right now, and about to start on toward the next destination, Iโ€™d love to review the coworking space Iโ€™m currently sitting in and start planning for the next stop.

I know that there are some threads around here about it, but Iโ€™d love to search โ€œTaipeiโ€ and see a list of them with reviews from actual nomads (rather than the hap-hazard websites the coworking spaces make about themselves).

Where's home? Where do you return to?

by @magalhini 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Hi there!

Iโ€™m sorry if this question has been asked before, whether in disguise or directly, but I couldnโ€™t find its own dedicated topic and I find it very interesting to talk about.

One of my issues with the remote working world is the lack of knowledge of where to return to. After a one/two/ten month stint living and working somewhere else (say Airbnbโ€™ing or a short let, meaning a place that is NOT yours by any means), where do you return to?

  • Do most nomads own a place that you rent while you travel?
  • If not, is this something that you consider doing?
  • Do you return to your home country before deciding where to go next? Or do you jump directly somewhere new?
  • And when you return, do you find the need to be in a personal, private space? (ie, not sharing with strangers 24/7 365 days a year)

Speaking for myself, Iโ€™ve gotten rid of my apartment in Portugal 2 years ago and moved to London simply for the pursuit of new and interesting opportunities. Iโ€™m now, at last, working remotely and I plan on working and living for a few weeks/months in random European cities, but not knowing where to return after to after thisโ€ฆ is killing me! (I still own too many possessions to carry in a backpack. Not too many, but moving is a hassle).

  • Those of you who travel without a set of keys on you, how do you deal with this thought? Iโ€™m really curious to get to know your views on this.

Thanks in advance. This forum has helped me a lot convincing me that this is a leap I need to make sooner or later  cheers!

Has anyone tried Spotahome?

by @wordmonkey 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Heya,

Iโ€™m looking into renting a flat in Istanbul for the somewhat longer term (between half a year and a whole year) from next spring, and Iโ€™ve come across spotahome.com, which seems to have quite a range of promising properties available in a number of cities, including Istanbul. The concept appears to be similar to Airbnb, with the exception that the site staff act as agents between you and the landlord to set up the initial arrangement; afterwards, everything is handled directly with the owner of the property. It also appears a bit more geared towards longer-term rentals compared to Airbnb. Has anyone used this site before? (Iโ€™ve run a search with only one result, so I assume the page is either fairly new or not very successfulโ€ฆ)

Cheers
Sylvie
