How is air quality in Medellin?

What do you think of the pillotion in Medellin Colombia ? I heard it is not as bad if you live in Poblado as it is further up. Is that true?

Hi Joe,
We were in Medellin, in Poblado, for Dec & Jan. We definitely noticed the pollution, but it didnโ€™t bother us physically (weโ€™re in good health, without asthma or other issues). That said, itโ€™s not nice to think your lungs are having to filter the cloud you see. Itโ€™s true that itโ€™s better higher up the valley side in Poblado, but also further south.
Hereโ€™s some really good info, stats & resources in a May 2017 post, with comments from people living there: http://medellinliving.com/pollution/

Hi Joe,

I stayed in El Pablado for around a week in October, the air was much cleaner on the side streets, but you could notice it on the main roads into the city centre. Plenty of great coffee shops and restaurants with air conditioning to escape the pollution though.

I was there about a year and a half ago for two and a half months.

I stayed mostly in Poblado.

Air pollution was definitely something I noticed, especially if walking along a street during rush hour. I never thought I would have so much gratitude for a catalytic converter!

That said, it just made taking the gondola out to the national park that much more worth it. Or even going up the hill to one of the open air malls would give you a break from it. Itโ€™s definitely there but itโ€™s not as inescapable as it can be in some parts of the world.

Also, at least when I was there, it was only air pollution. They had some of the cleanest streets and sidewalks, there was an obvious effort to try and clean up the city.

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @adele | 2yr 2 years ago | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.

We purchased an apartment in Medellin and are looking to ship some stuff from our storage unit there. Value of the stuff varies from Vitamix to iMacsโ€ฆ

Wondering if any of you can suggest the best shippers to work with. Weโ€™re not in a hurry to get it but want to make sure it arrives in one piece.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Short term (1-3 months) in Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @jodie_taylor | 3yr 2 years ago | 30 comments

Hello all,

Iโ€™m just interested on anyones experience of renting short term (1-3 months) accommodation in Medellin, Colombia.

I had a look on Airbnb of course, lots of places, on the more expensive which isnโ€™t a huge issueโ€ฆ Iโ€™m just wondering if in anyones experience itโ€™s better to take a room for a week and shop around when I get there or whether I should just book a month upfront? I recently had a bad experience with Airbnb so not dying to go down that road again just yet if Iโ€™m honest.

Iโ€™ll be arriving in Medellin from November onwards over the Xmas period and likely through till January, maybe longer. Another friend is coming with me so we could potentially rent a 2 bed apartment, or Iโ€™d also be happy in a studio or a private room in a decent house even. Iโ€™m thinking El Poblano or Laureles, as we are two girls with limited Spanish.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Internet quality in Guatemala (esp. Antigua)

in Antigua, Guatemala by @clusk | 3yr 3 years ago | 5 comments

Has anyone been to Antigua, Guatemala recently? It is on my list for destinations to stay for a week or so. Wanted to know if anyone has had an experience there recently or could point out a cafe or two to find a decent Wi-Fi connection.

Thanks!

How is Chiang Mai's air quality?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @albyantoniazzi | 3yr 3 years ago | 9 comments

Hello everyone!
Iโ€™m currently touring South East Asia and Iโ€™m now in Koh Lanta (Thailand). I was planning to visit Chiang Mai on friday, but Iโ€™ve read the air quality in this period is so bad due to fires that are using as a method of cultivating crops there in the north. Is it something to take in consideration or just nothing to care about?
Thanks in advance!
And by the way, if anybody is in Chiang Mai and would like to grab a coffee would also be cool!

How to find a 1-month apartment for rent in Medellin, Colombia?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @levelsio | 4yr 3 years ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m visiting Medellin this October for a month and was wondering whatโ€™s the best way to find a place there.

Iโ€™m looking at El Pabelado, but on Airbnb itโ€™s all like $1500, when I know the real rent price there for a 1br should be $600.

Anyone can recommend some locals so I wonโ€™t get scammed/overpay?

How is the quality of wifi & 3G in Amed, Bali?

in Amed, Indonesia by @adrienbetweets | 4yr 3 years ago | 3 comments

Hi all!

I am considering going for 1+ month in Amed (to get more into freediving).

I need to be able to make Skype calls & other work-related tasks. I need a speed equivalent to one allowing me to watch Youtube videos.

Ubud is way more connected in comparison, so I donโ€™t expect anything wonderful.

Wondering if anyone has done this before & if yes: what 3G
provider they used, or what cafe/restaurant/hotel had a good/reliable
enough wifi connection.

Note that I went to Amed last year & the 3G connection on the 2 providers I used at the time was terrible. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking for help.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I also posted this question on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/82403/quality-of-wifis-3g-reception-in-amed-bali

Can anyone recommend a good dentist in Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @rudiments | 4yr 3 years ago | 0 comments

Iโ€™ll be in Medellin next week and would like to get a dental check up and maybe some work done before cycling into the mountains to the south. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent and cheap dentist? English or Spanish speaking is fine.

Thanks!

Quality of remote connections (RDP, TeamViewer etc.) from SE Asia to Europe?

by @djar | 4yr 4 years ago | 3 comments

Hi,
this is David from germany.

I am planning to stay in SE Asia in Q4 2015 while continue working. My work is location independent, but i would need to access customer sites in germany via remote connection. Has anyone done this bevor?
When i was in Thailand for holiday, voip telephony like skype, google talk etc. was working fine, but i did not test any remote access. It was a holiday.

I know that for web guys, this is not a problem, because SSH and git are not so much time critical like a โ€œliveโ€ desktop session. I know that there will be more lag, as ping times Asia -> Europe will be more like 500ms rather than the < 100ms what working in close proximity to the customer.

I might start at Bangkok or Chiang Mai, so any first hand reports from there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

Are there Nomad List meetups in Bogota or Medellin?

in Medellรญn, Colombia by @dcodyschm | 4yr 4 years ago | 10 comments

Iโ€™m currently looking to go to one of the two cities in the upcoming months (or both!) to do research for a documentary. Are there any shared workspaces or meet-ups for nomad anyone recommends? Iโ€™d love to interview people who have been living there for a while and do a bit of networking. For you veterans, whatโ€™s the best way to go about this?

How is the quality of 3G in Myanmar?

in Myanmar by @adrienbetweets | 4yr 4 years ago | 7 comments

I plan to go to Myanmar and I would like to know about the current state of the 3G network in this country.

Is it anywhere possible to work from Myanmar with a local 3G sim card (yes, using it as a hotspot)?

I donโ€™t need extremely fast internet, but I have been told Myanmar is very much behind regarding many topicsโ€ฆ

Ho Chi Minh City vs Chiang Mai vs Medellin?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @mementomoriblog | 4yr 4 years ago | 7 comments

Iโ€™ve realized that if I really want to be a DN entrepreneur, I need to get my ass to a DN hub.

My income (around $1000 USD/month) and some research Iโ€™ve done point to Saigon, Chiang Mai, and Medellin as 3 great choices to start out with.

I know some people who could โ€œplug me inโ€ to the DN scene in Medellin and Saigon, but not Chiang Mai.

The primary goal of me moving is to build relationships with DN entrepreneurs, and get great work done. Quality of life for $1000 USD a month is very important too, as I know how much a lack of money can degrade oneโ€™s quality of life.

Any advice from people who have lived in 2 or more of these cities? Any particular ways I should be thinking about this?

Right now my initial, probably wrong impressions are:

Medellin -
Pros: Culture and language are more interesting to me than Vietnamese or Thai culture.

Cons: More dangerous than SE Asia, not sure how much more. Higher cost of living than SE Asia. Thriving community, but not as much as SE Asia.

Chiang Mai -
Pros: Lowest cost of living. Very friendly, safe. Probably the easiest to integrate into, and least stressful.

Cons: Harder to connect with locals than in other locations (I know a decent amount of Italian, so Spanish seems easier, and apparently a decent amount of Vietnamese living in Saigon speak English.)

Saigon:

Pros: Seems to have the best community for what I am looking for. Very exciting entrepreneurial atmosphere. Cheaper than Medellin.

Cons: Pollution, could get old living in super urbanized area (stressful perhaps)

Right now I am leaning towards Saigon haha, but I am hoping for othersโ€™ experience based perspectives as I am just spouting theory right now :slightly_smiling:

Also, it seems like maybe I should be just thinking about Medellin vs either of the other two cities, since I could literally just fly between Saigon and Chiang Mai for cheap and see how I like either of them.

How much does air quality matter to you when you choose your locations?

by @loniklara | 5yr 4 years ago | 11 comments

Hey everyone! This is a question Iโ€™m asking out of curiosity since Iโ€™ve lived in South Korea for several years, been to China, Thailand and the Philippines and have recently traveled to Malaysia and Vietnam. By no means is pollution unique to Asia, but much of the developing process involves CO2 emissions and places like Indonesia and Vietnam produce a lot of smoke in the air by burning rice fields. Personally, this really puts me off from visiting these countries for any substantial period of time so I was wondering if itโ€™s a factor for you as well, or do you just deal with it - and if so, for how long?

I think Iโ€™m admittedly pretty sensitive to air quality because Iโ€™m prone to dust allergy, and especially since I have reaped the benefits of living in clean places like Sweden and Finland in the past. But I canโ€™t imagine this not being an important factor especially for people who have children or health issues. Iโ€™d love to get your thoughts on this

Best quality/price backpack easily acquirable in europe?

by @theunisk | 5yr 4 years ago | 11 comments

Iโ€™m currently travelling through europe and my two-bag setup is a chore. Can any of you recommend top loading backpacks that Iโ€™d be able to find in a store, or that has reasonably quick delivery time (within a week)?
Iโ€™d love to get a tortuga, but they donโ€™t ship to where Iโ€™m from.

I might settle down somewhere for a bit longer in which case I could probably order anything, but Iโ€™d love to ditch my old backpack asap so any suggestions would be appreciated!

How is quality of leisure rated?

by @vitalyx | 5yr 5 years ago | 5 comments

Hi,
Iโ€™m a software engineer who currently lives in Amsterdam and is considering to move to Austin and possibly settle there. The quality of leisure is 2 for Austin and 5 for Amsterdam. Iโ€™ve been to Austin last year for a week and had a great time there. Iโ€™d say they are comparable, but maybe Iโ€™m missing something. Iโ€™d like to know how the quality of leisure is rated?

P.S.
I tend to prefer outdoor daytime activities.

Thank you.
