How is the quality of 3G in Myanmar?

in Myanmar by @adrienbetweets 8yr  | 7 comments

I plan to go to Myanmar and I would like to know about the current state of the 3G network in this country.

Is it anywhere possible to work from Myanmar with a local 3G sim card (yes, using it as a hotspot)?

I donโ€™t need extremely fast internet, but I have been told Myanmar is very much behind regarding many topicsโ€ฆ

Hi

I am currently in Mawlamyine and stayed in Yangon before. I equipped an iPhone 4 and 5 with telenor simcards (locals told me itโ€™s the best carrier for internet).

I can not activate a hotspot with both of the phones, but it works for whatโ€™s app and such things. I am now trying to set up my USB dongle with a simcardโ€ฆ

The Wifis were enough for mails and trello so far, but not much more โ€œrealโ€ working.

I just finished two weeks there. Upon arrival at Yangon Airport, I spent 1500 kyat for a SIM card, and another 12k kyat for 2gb of data. Thatโ€™s just under $11 USD total.

Bring crisp hundreds - get them from the KTB branch (I thinkโ€ฆ purple signage) inside the BKK international terminal, and change to kyat right at Yangon airport. Kyat gets you a better deal and will be accepted without complaint even if theyโ€™re falling apart. Change them back at the airport on your way out.

Schwab worked at ATMs, though not until I called and re-added a travel notification. I found CC to rarely be accepted, and if accepted, with a 5% fee. Stayed in my wallet.

Wifi is painfully slow at the (mostly) 3-star hotels I stayed at in Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Hsipaw and Inle. Under 200kbps. I only used it overnight for larger downloaded and app updates.
One UK entrepreneur running an unscale pub in Nyaung Shwe told me he planned to get satellite in order to have decent bandwidth.

Agreed - I seemed to be blocked by the carrier for using my phone as a hotspot on iOS. FaceTime audio was reliable, but video quickly overwhelmed the mobile network.

Had 3G in all the cities, on top of temples in Bagan, for most of the train from Mandalay to Hsipaw, and even outside a monastery in a mountain village above Inle.

Hilariously, speedtests I ran throughout the country were always under 2Mbps and usually under 1Mbpsโ€ฆ except at the aforementioned monastery - 7.8 up and 2.36 down!

Enjoy - I found it to be an awesome adventure and canโ€™t wait to return.

Thanks for the detailed reply! What was the name of the mobile provider you used?

Telenor - theyโ€™re a DTAC subsidiary, but even if you have a DTAC Thai SIM youโ€™ll need to get a new Telenor one.

I was there in November and was impressed at how good it was!
I bought a Sim card at Yangon airport for sub $10. It worked great in the city and on the road up to NayPyiDaw and on to Inle Lake with decent coverage pretty much all the way. Mandalay was fine too as was the trip down the river to Bagan. Around Bagan it was not that good. Overall it was great. I used it as a hot spot was remotely logging in to servers in the UK and even streaming video much to my surprise! This was all on an Samsung (Android phone). For some reason the friends I travelled with could not set up their iPhones to use as a hotspot.

Thanks Borowis, your tips are very helpful.

OpenSignal.com indicates a very good coverage in Yangon, Naypyitaw & Mandalay. Outside of these cities, things seem to be rather โ€œdifferentโ€.

prepaid-data-sim-card.wikia.com/wiki/Myanmar mentions:

Only go to Myanmar if you can live with erratic and often painfully slow internet access. This is true to Wi-Fi as well as to all three mobile operators especially on the countryside. Both of the newcomers sold millions of SIM cards each in only a few months. First, they were so high in demand in 2014 that black-market prices skyrocketed. But in 2015 you get them on every street corner where you have coverage for the regular price.

MPT has again lowered prices but has still unreliable and slow internet access. It gives the best coverage throughout the country on 2G 900 Mhz and 3G 2100 Mhz and simultaneously on an incompatible CDMA network. Ooredoo only builds up a 3G network mostly on 900 Mhz with no fall back to 2G. Telenor is said to be the most reliable for data where it has coverage on 2G 900 Mhz and especially on 3G 2100 Mhz. A fourth license to Vietnam-backed Vietel Group was given out recently, but they havenโ€™t started yet.

But it still does not tell me how possible a Skype call without video would be, nor provides any speedtest data (from one of these cities mentioned above).

Any feedback regarding recent personal experience would be very appreciated.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

in Antigua , Guatemala by @clusk 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Has anyone been to Antigua, Guatemala recently? It is on my list for destinations to stay for a week or so. Wanted to know if anyone has had an experience there recently or could point out a cafe or two to find a decent Wi-Fi connection.

How is Chiang Mai's air quality?

in Chiang Mai , Thailand by @albyantoniazzi 7yr 7 years ago  | 9 comments

Hello everyone!
Iโ€™m currently touring South East Asia and Iโ€™m now in Koh Lanta (Thailand). I was planning to visit Chiang Mai on friday, but Iโ€™ve read the air quality in this period is so bad due to fires that are using as a method of cultivating crops there in the north. Is it something to take in consideration or just nothing to care about?
Thanks in advance!
And by the way, if anybody is in Chiang Mai and would like to grab a coffee would also be cool!

Experiences using 3G amplifier in remote areas?

by @adrienbetweets 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Iโ€™m considering traveling with a 3G amplifier.

Has anyone been testing such device while traveling?

I know it sounds ridiculous to travel with such thing, but it would allow one to still be able to work while in rather unusual places, far away from coworking spacesโ€ฆ

Cheers,
Adrien

How is the quality of wifi & 3G in Amed, Bali?

in Amed , Indonesia by @adrienbetweets 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi all!

I am considering going for 1+ month in Amed (to get more into freediving).

I need to be able to make Skype calls & other work-related tasks. I need a speed equivalent to one allowing me to watch Youtube videos.

Ubud is way more connected in comparison, so I donโ€™t expect anything wonderful.

Wondering if anyone has done this before & if yes: what 3G
provider they used, or what cafe/restaurant/hotel had a good/reliable
enough wifi connection.

Note that I went to Amed last year & the 3G connection on the 2 providers I used at the time was terrible. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking for help.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I also posted this question on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/82403/quality-of-wifis-3g-reception-in-amed-bali

Quality of remote connections (RDP, TeamViewer etc.) from SE Asia to Europe?

by @djar 8yr 8 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi,
this is David from germany.

I am planning to stay in SE Asia in Q4 2015 while continue working. My work is location independent, but i would need to access customer sites in germany via remote connection. Has anyone done this bevor?
When i was in Thailand for holiday, voip telephony like skype, google talk etc. was working fine, but i did not test any remote access. It was a holiday.

I know that for web guys, this is not a problem, because SSH and git are not so much time critical like a โ€œliveโ€ desktop session. I know that there will be more lag, as ping times Asia -> Europe will be more like 500ms rather than the < 100ms what working in close proximity to the customer.

I might start at Bangkok or Chiang Mai, so any first hand reports from there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
David

Best 3G/4G carrier for Bali?

by @jruz 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Hi, Im going to spend 2 month in Bali mainly in Ubud.
Iโ€™m getting a Hubud membership but donโ€™t want to be trapped there all the time, so I want some reliable mobile connection.

So far Iโ€™ve been checking out:

From the coverage maps on their websites, seems they all cover pretty well the Kuta area, but but other areas not.

My usage is mainly: Github, Slack and one daily Video Call.

Do you have some recommendation on this? I was thinking on Indosat.

Thanks!

How much does air quality matter to you when you choose your locations?

by @loniklara 9yr 9 years ago  | 11 comments

Hey everyone! This is a question Iโ€™m asking out of curiosity since Iโ€™ve lived in South Korea for several years, been to China, Thailand and the Philippines and have recently traveled to Malaysia and Vietnam. By no means is pollution unique to Asia, but much of the developing process involves CO2 emissions and places like Indonesia and Vietnam produce a lot of smoke in the air by burning rice fields. Personally, this really puts me off from visiting these countries for any substantial period of time so I was wondering if itโ€™s a factor for you as well, or do you just deal with it - and if so, for how long?

I think Iโ€™m admittedly pretty sensitive to air quality because Iโ€™m prone to dust allergy, and especially since I have reaped the benefits of living in clean places like Sweden and Finland in the past. But I canโ€™t imagine this not being an important factor especially for people who have children or health issues. Iโ€™d love to get your thoughts on this

Best quality/price backpack easily acquirable in europe?

by @theunisk 9yr 9 years ago  | 11 comments

Iโ€™m currently travelling through europe and my two-bag setup is a chore. Can any of you recommend top loading backpacks that Iโ€™d be able to find in a store, or that has reasonably quick delivery time (within a week)?
Iโ€™d love to get a tortuga, but they donโ€™t ship to where Iโ€™m from.

I might settle down somewhere for a bit longer in which case I could probably order anything, but Iโ€™d love to ditch my old backpack asap so any suggestions would be appreciated!
