How safe are North African countries?

by @naii 8yr  | 5 comments

Iโ€™ll be in Portugal in June and think about exploring North Africa โ€” for the first time: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt.

If youโ€™ve beee there: How safe did you feel working remotely there?

@yanokwa and I are currently in Cairo and are having a fantastic experience so far. Weโ€™re staying in Maโ€™adi which is a bit quieter than the town center. We are working out of The Districtโ€™s new location on Nasr Street. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have about Cairo!

I just traveled through Casablanca and Marrakech, and am now exploring Doha and Dubai. Morocco is safe, particularly for males, in the same way Belgium is safe. The conventional wisdom is to โ€œavoid crowds,โ€ however, Iโ€™m not sure how youโ€™d experience the country with this as a primary goal. The Jemaa el-Fnaa souk in Marrakech was the site of the 2011 bombing. I operated from a riad a block from the square. Although thereโ€™ve been heightened reports of โ€œextremistโ€ activity in the country, ultimately I suppose your risk is a matter of chance. Tens of thousands of Europeans and Americans still flock to Morocco annually. Personally, Iโ€™ve gotten a lot more โ€œshadeโ€ from Qataris than I ever did from Moroccans. The latter are more interested in selling you goods at a โ€œdemocratic price,โ€ than your background. The travels through the Atlas Mountains were quite enjoyable as well.

My experience with Egypt is equally positive - although the โ€œunrestโ€ is a bit more palpable. There have been direct attacks targeting tourists in the last couple of months and Egypt has seen an uptick of sporadic events targeting tourists over the last couple of years. These often happen at popular hotels, although Egypt is a large country and as a matter of risk/statistics, the risk seems fairly low.

Tunisia saw a couple of attacks last year although I can only remember one that targeted tourists, the rest were related to local political unrest. I donโ€™t believe Algeria has been too much of a target lately.

Ultimately, you have to decide what your risk tolerance is. As you travel outside of the main cities, your risk will increase. YOLO can be interpreted in two distinct ways: for the experience and against it. From your profile picture, youโ€™ll have a tough time โ€œblending inโ€ so that may be part of your consideration - but ultimately, your risk is likely not related to a direct incident against your person but a broader risk of a pre-planned attack where youโ€™re in the โ€œwrong place in the wrong time.โ€

Good luck!

Hi, Iโ€™m in Egypt quiet often. Itโ€™s beautiful, people are great. you might want to read this article by Mira Arnoldโ€ฆ it describes the situation pretty well. http://digitalnomadgirls.com/digital-nomad-girls-destination-month-egypt/

Not very safe, letโ€™s be honest. Avoid crowds, demonstrations, areas known to be terrorism hot spots.

If you want to see the African desert, you may want to consider Namibia. Or the UAE.

Just do your research and make sure that you set up base in a place thatโ€™s known to be safe. The countries youโ€™ve listed should all be perfectly fine if you donโ€™t do anything silly :upside_down_face:

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

How do you track the total number of days you've spent in different countries?

by @gonchs 5yr 5 years ago  | 12 comments

How do you track a total number of days youโ€™ve spent in different countries during the past 12 months?

I find it to be important for visa and tax purposes to know how long and where Iโ€™ve been and Iโ€™m unable to find any software that solves this.

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Any digital nomads from third world countries?

by @mika 9yr 9 years ago  | 39 comments

Hello, Iโ€™m a freelance designer from the Philippines. I was just wondering if there were any digital nomads who arenโ€™t American/European/Australian/Canadian/etc. How do you deal with visa issues? Or do you just stick to countries where you donโ€™t need visas? Are there any other challenges that you have because of your country of origin?
