How to find accommodation in Turkey?

in Turkey by @pilat | 5yr  | 8 comments

โ€ฆ or in any modern town (with multi-storey appt buildings).

Hi, Iโ€™m going to Alanya, Turkey this October/November (then moving to Goa). My plan for Goa is the following: I rent something via Booking/AirBnB for just 2-3 days so that we could be rested from the road. During these days Iโ€™m going to shop around for longer and less expensive accommodation. In India, they say, the best way is to do it โ€œofflineโ€: just go to streets and look for โ€œRooms to letโ€ signs. Itโ€™s Ok, I believe, in rural area with 1-2 story houses, but how would one โ€œshop offlineโ€ in a modern town like Alanya? I mean, you wonโ€™t go into a multi-storey apartment buildings and knock at the doors, will you? Any advices?

Maybe, there are some boards that locals use to rent flats? I donโ€™t like prices on AirBnB, to be honestโ€ฆ Especially with current Rub-to-Euro conversion rate
Besides, our primary goal on this trip is to try living โ€œlike a nativeโ€; not interested in touristic attractions.

Ok. Iโ€™ve found affordable option and hereโ€™s how: a friend of mine suggested a facebook group of russian expats in Alanya. There Iโ€™ve found few options, met with owners etc. The prices are surprisingly lower on the facebook feed than in most rental sites.

Here they are:

  1. Russian group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rentalanya/
  2. Not sure about something similar in Englishโ€ฆ Hereโ€™s an expats group, though: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Alanyaexpatssocialgroup/ (warning: they consider rental ads as spam, but you could try to ask about proper rental group there)

The best way to find an accommodation in another country is to talk to some friend who have already been there. It is the most safe way to my mind.

Iโ€™ve been to Turkey for at least 5 times and iโ€™ve also faced a problem like you do now. A friend of mine recommended me a small hotel right in the middle of Antalya. I used his advice and settled there. BTW its name is Eski Masal Hotel. It is a really nice place to come either with your friends or with your lovers. Iโ€™ve also visited Eski Masal with my parents once and they also liked it a lot.

Nice service, good people, delicious cuisine - perfect atmosphere for those who are not looking for getting drunk 24/7 during their trip to Antalya.

One thing I say - Iโ€™ve visited Eski Masal Hotel for 4 times and I will do it all the time because those guys know how to make my leisure unforgettable.

Hope I was helpful, buddy!
Have a nice day!

In turkey you can find easily accomodation offline. You can find also good hotels with private rooms and wifi for around 30 TL.

Well, thatโ€™s my question: How? How do one finds accommodations offline in a modern town (specifically, in Alanya)? Where should I go first? Maybe, buy certain newspaper? Iโ€™ve read about โ€œgo ask where Main street isโ€ concept in Lonely Planet, but thatโ€™s applicable to villages, I believe?

Hello Viladimir ,

Alanya is a popular city in Antalya. Too many German lives there and they have their own houses. ฤฐt takes about 2-3 hours to reach the city.
I would recommend kemer or konyaaltฤฑ for a better vacation. You can find too many shopiing center and beaches are great. Too many russian, ukranien people choose kemer or konyaaltฤฑ part for vacation. I live in konyaaltฤฑ and too many russian family live in konyaaltฤฑ together with us.

By the way drop me a message when you come to Antalya. I would be gald to meet with you.

Cheers

Ali

Driving from Italy to Croatia..how to handle passport?

in Croatia by @ld | 8d 8 days ago | 3 comments

Hello, we are US citizens that have been able to stay in Italy past our standard visa stay due to covid. Now we must leave. We want to drive to Croatia as our โ€œout of EUโ€ stay. But Iโ€™m now wondering what considerations I need to take care of for my visa. I wonโ€™t go through an airport and get my passport stamped. But I assume I need to get my passport stamped as a way to prove Iโ€™m out of the EU.

Anyone else travel in and out of Schengen zone via car? Or know what I should do to properly handle the visa situation? I get unclear answers online. Hmm.

Appreciate your help!

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 13d 12 days ago | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Best/quickest way from Italy to Croatia?

in Croatia by @ld | 14d 14 days ago | 3 comments

Hello,

We are in Umbria until August 31. We've been here since March, but crisis-level visa extensions are over. After that we have to leave the EU. We would like to stay out of the USA (our home) due to it's covid crisis, at the same time we want to be responsible about travel. Ideally we would not travel at all, rather stay hidden in the countryside of Umbria forever until covid is more under control globally, but here we are!

So we must leave the Schengen zone. We should avoid USA. We should avoid long air travel.

We were thinking Croatia.

Do you recommend a route to Croatia? We are open to long train rides. Ideally not long ferry rides. Is there a ferry route under 4 hours? I read about it...I don't see it. If not, the other option is to make our way north and up over to Croatia via train.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and insights!

Thanks.

Iโ€™m looking for any recommendations for services or people others have used to get answers on the best place to set up their businesses based on their personal circumstances.

Leaning towards Singapore after a ton of research, but would really like some concrete advice before jumping in.

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva | 19d 18 days ago | 1 comment

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Did you learn any Thai before staying in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @digitaldiva | 19d 19 days ago | 0 comments

Iโ€™m curious to know how many people learned some Thai before going there. Learning languages is a hobby of mine but Iโ€™m very put off by how complex the writing system is, and if I decide not to learn it Iโ€™ll probably cross Chiang Mai off my bucket list. I prefer to be at least conversational in a language before I do an extended stay in a country. Iโ€™m curious how people who learned no Thai did getting by. And Iโ€™m curious, from people who did learn some, if itโ€™s any easier than it seems? Thanks!

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 24d 23 days ago | 39 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Any recommendation on accommodations in Cape Town?

in Cape Town, South Africa by @danielletom | 4yr 3 years ago | 3 comments

Hey guys,

Iโ€™m looking at heading to Cape Town in February/March. I am looking for a long term accomodation for about three months. I checked out GumTree and StayinCapeTown, but I was wondering if you had any more reccomendations on where to look! Airbnb is quite expensive and sparse.

Also, I would love to know your favourite areas in the city and hear about your experiences

Thanks !

How to find short term accommodation in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @kathrynoh | 4yr 3 years ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m planning on 6 weeks in Chiang Mai soon and most of the stuff Iโ€™ve read about finding a place there says the best thing to do is to look in person. Considering the short time Iโ€™m there, I would prefer to prebook to say a couple of days of apartment hunting.

I was wondering about the options for short(ish) term accommodation and if pre-booking is worthwhile or if Iโ€™ll just get fobbed off with the worst room/apartment available.

Iโ€™m just looking for something basic - so long as it has air conditioning. Having a work space would be a definite advantage as would closeness to coffee. Other than that, things like a pool, gym, kitchen arenโ€™t that important to me.

Price for basic accommodation in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica?

in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica by @niklasmodess | 4yr 4 years ago | 0 comments

Hi!
Me and my girlfriend are planning on staying 1-3 months in Santa Teresa, starting in May. Does anybody know how much we can expect to pay in rent, and if there are any good places online to look for apartments? Or is it better to look for a place once weโ€™re there? So far weโ€™ve mostly found more upscale options online but we just need a place that is safe, clean and that has a kitchen. A small studio would be fine.
Any help with this would be appreciated!

Any nomads want to share accommodation in Hanoi?

in Hanoi, Vietnam by @susangaigher | 4yr 4 years ago | 0 comments

Hi there! I will be in Hanoi from 25 March and am looking to rent a room or share an apartment with someone. Probably around the West Lake area. If you have a spot in your place for me or want to team up and look for a place together, send me a message!

Or if anyone wants to grab a beer and show me the ropes that would also be much appreciated.

Cheers!

How is Istanbul for digital nomads?

in Istanbul, Turkey by @theunisk | 5yr 4 years ago | 13 comments

Iโ€™m soon heading out on my first solo international trip as a remote worker.
Iโ€™m thinking of starting in Istanbul mid June, and slowly making my way up
north, staying a month or so in cities along the way.

Have any of you stayed in Istanbul for a couple of weeks or longer? Anyone there now?
For accommodation there seems to be some options on airbnb.

  • Which areas are good and which are best avoided?
  • Are there any useful local sites?
  • Would it be worth booking a place for a couple of nights and trying to find a good deal on the ground?
  • What would a good rate be for a room or small apartment for a one month stay?

A lot of questions here, Iโ€™d appreciate any bits of advice you can share!

What's your approach to finding medium term accommodation?

by @andygreenwood | 5yr 5 years ago | 24 comments

Hi everyone.

Whatโ€™s your approach/resources for finding medium term accommodation (Iโ€™m thinking 1 month-3 months as that tends to be the visa limit)?

Been building up my work this year whilst also being a traditional backpacker so moving far too quickly.

Next year is all about picking two or three locations and โ€œsettlingโ€ for a while.

What is possible demand for a co-living space in Istanbul?

in Istanbul, Turkey by @muratkun | 5yr 5 years ago | 2 comments

Hello
Im a startup lover from Istanbul, and me and my friends we opened first non-profit co-working space for students near Bogaziรงi university.(we are also still in college)

its called " garage " spelling is in Turkish : http://www.garaj.co/

It is totaly free for students, we host events like startup talks, give workshops about ios-android dev, pi-arduino , robotics, data ,analytics etc.
We teach little kids (7-15 olds )basics of programming (scratch) for free

What im asking here is ; I need to come up with a business model to make it sustainable for a long time.

Co-living concept sounds pretty good to me and i feel like it will get just bigger and better in the future.

So im asking your opinion about staying in a co-living space which is part of a student co-working area for digital nomads. Its in university neighboorhood 40 minutes train ride to anywhere(Taksim-bluemosque are etc). Young passionate people around and decent internet connection. It wonโ€™t cost much

Thanks for reply
