How to get bank statements remotely?

by @hoperto | 3yr  | 12 comments

Greetings!

Me & my gf holding not very strong passports, so have to apply for a visas quite often.
Soon need to make a visa applications from the countries we have no ties with.
The problem is that by the moment of making an applications, a bank statements will be outdated and the banks we currently use donโ€™t send the paper statements internationally. That cause quite a lot of problems with visa applications. (the way i see it now is to open new account in each country, transfer funds to it and wait for 3 months)

Any suggestion on probably some fin tech banking startup where one can both open the account remotely (with using a local mailbox service i suppose) and get a paper statement delivered internationally?
Hope there is a solution to it

i donโ€™t want to describe a details of my situation publicly here.
The point is opening a personal offshore account isnโ€™t impossible & not illegal. However it is clearly hard now and likely to be harder in the future.
One can always defend or oppose the bureaucratic side of our lifes. Location independent lifestyle generally isnโ€™t a very regulated sphere. Regulations are always following social and economic changes with some delay. I guess weโ€™re here to make a solutions which allow us a higher degree a personal freedom and at the same time comply with existing regulations. If so - this topic is exactly about it.

Definitely. But the framework is already working for you. You are required by international law to have a personal residency (e.g. rent a house, or live) somewhere. You canโ€™t be a stateless non-resident. There are many, many, many legal ramifications for doing that and theyโ€™re not positive.

I love the โ€œweโ€™re all world citizens, letโ€™s live everywhere and not be a resident anywhereโ€ ideology. But if youโ€™re going that way then you canโ€™t use the traditional world services anymore. They donโ€™t like to serve you. In your case, it makes much more sense to just go crypto.

Iโ€™m sure thereโ€™s exceptions and you can make it happen somewhere. But itโ€™ll not be for long. Every bank will apply Know Your Customer (KYC) stuff soon.

Yeah i generally agree with that. Itโ€™s just not impossible & illegal, at least not yet. Itโ€™s quite an effort to make the things work this way, and it will be harder.

I do use crypto, but it isnโ€™t accepted by the institutions that much yet and i canโ€™t show balances in crypto instead of the bank statements. (except bitcoin for Australia & Japan). Legal & regulatory base for it is just not here yet.

Solution to this topicโ€™s problem(at this moment) is exactly in getting offshore personal account with the bank which is able to send a statements remotely.

I guess further discussion will be more ideological instead of applicable.

Update:
Singapore - failed, but someone might have a better luck
CIMB Bank - accepted application, do not require residency. However it wasnโ€™t approved.
DBS - contacted call-center 2 times, 2 times confirmed that can apply without a residency in SG. Walk-in in 2 branches - both required residency with no option.
HSBC - can open with minimum deposit 200k SGD. Didnโ€™t do that.
UBS - some friend opened there a year ago without a residency. both call-center and walk-in rejected such possibility.

Youโ€™re trying to do something thatโ€™s 1) impossible 2) illegal.

Financial institutions now have so-called Know Your Customer (KYC) laws, that means you need to be able to identify yourself, live somewhere and have proof of address, usually in the same country as the bank where youโ€™re opening an account.

Not impossible and not illegal.
Yes, they do have the KYC policies and had them before, but policies & their implementations can vary. Opening an account while not a resident in the country doesnโ€™t mean not providing a KYC info, you just provide an address in your residence country. (and all other info required by their KYC process)

But you said you donโ€™t have official residency anymore, right? In that case banks really donโ€™t want you. Laws obviously vary but increasingy KYC has and will make this impossible.

The only thing that I can think of is sending the paper to someone you know in your home country and getting them to send it to you with UPS or FEDEX?

Not sure if that works but thought I should share

Been living around since a while, donโ€™t have a bank acc in my country
Banks i have accounts with do not send a statements without personal visit. Also donโ€™t have anyone whom i can give a power of attorney for my bank acc.

Only reasonable solution i see so far is to find a bank with which i can work completely remotely. Was thinking to make some offshore company in tax haven + bank acc for that, but need a personal account. Also, accounts in traditional tax havens may look suspicious and that will only add more bureaucratic stuff to be done.

Does your bank offer online statements? I have simply printed those for use with visa applications before.

Yeah, it does. However self-printed are rarely accepted :frowning:
There is an option i found and will try soon - a few banks in Singapore can make accs without residency there (a lot of articles online saying that they donโ€™t really do it anymore, but i called like 15, few of them were OK with it, without 1000000$ deposit requirement) and they also can send paper statement internationally.

Which EU country doesn't charge social security for freelancers

in Luxembourg by @colin_o_keeffe | 14d 13 days ago | 0 comments

As far as I'm aware Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium charge both sides (employee and employer) of the statutory social security pension if you are a freelancer. Are there countries that don't make this a requirement? It is crippling having to pay out upwards of 19% of your income into a state pension.

Where do I get good legal advice/support to have a long-term stay in Portugal?

in Lisbon, Portugal by @mzorrilla | 27d 27 days ago | 4 comments

Hello, everyone!

My idea is to stay as low as 6 months and as long as a year (maybe, who knows) over Lisbon after doing some analysis from many cities in Europe.

I'm an Argentinian and Chilean (both nationalities) so... no Euro-pass for me (getting my Italian nationality could take 2 years easily). I'm also a remote worker and I have a really good income (I work for a Silicon Valley company) so I can show more than enough resources to stay in the country.

Everything I see online doesn't inspire me much confidence (most sites looks a bit scammy) and this is not a "vacation stay"... I want to be clear my head far away from Argentina right now. If someone has a good website, recommendations, etc I will super appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh | 1mo 1 month ago | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint | 1mo 1 month ago | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 | 1mo 1 month ago | 7 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 | 1mo 1 month ago | 0 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

What's the first step now that I can work remotely?

by @mariaplslourdes | 1yr 1 year ago | 4 comments

Hi everyone and nice to e-meet you!
finally, after so long I found a job that allows me to work remotely.
But now? Do you have any practical advice that I can use to approach this new world?
In particular, I have to put my tax situation in order, do you know a good tax advisor from whom I can ask for advice? (Iโ€™m Italian but I live in Franceโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how long it will beโ€ฆ) )
Beyond that, any advice is welcome.
Thank you!

Is there a US bank for easily creating new business checking accounts remotely?

by @tylertringas | 2yr 2 years ago | 23 comments

Every accountant is going to tell you that you really should be keeping separate accounts for all your businesses and even projects that may one day become businesses. But in my experience setting up a new account associated with an actual business entity is a pretty annoying process involving an in-person visit to a bank branch, proof of residence in that branchโ€™s region, etc. Has anybody seen a bank that letโ€™s you easily create a simple business checking account online and more importantly that would let you add additional accounts and transfer funds between them?

Do you hangout with backpackers, while still working remotely?

by @jtompl | 5yr 4 years ago | 14 comments

Iโ€™ve noticed that recently a lot of us tend to prefer the โ€˜slow-travelโ€™ rhythm, which is more about moving to a place for a month or two, and then living there, instead of changing your place every couple days.

However, what about those that still like the fast pace of travelling, with meeting lots of other travellers on the road? Are there any nomads here, that still like the backpackersโ€™ lifestyle? That is: you travel through a whole country by yourself; you change your place of living much more often; but you still have to work a bit digitally in the meantime?

If yes, then how do you hang out with backpackers and keep up with their pace, while still having to work remotely?

Related questions:

  • How do you choose which hostel (or place, area to go to in general) to stay in as a next one?
  • How do you maximize your way of meeting other travellers and your own travelling experience (by seeing other places, people and their cultures), while still having to work remotely in the meantime?

I like both digital nomads & backpackers, but so far, barely Iโ€™ve seen any digital nomads in the backpacker places or vice-versa. Iโ€™m wondering why? In the end, it would be a clear connection of Work & Travel at the same time, two things that a lot of us propably enjoy very much at this moment.

Which country in Central America is best to work remotely?

by @marss | 5yr 4 years ago | 5 comments

Hey nomads,

I have just started working fully nomad a few days ago.
My first place outside of Germany will be the Dominican Republic next week.
However, I am already going to need the next flight for after that.
My carrier told me that they will bounce me at the check-in otherwise.
Which country in CA do you recommend for the next stop?

I need very stable internet, as I work a lot over skype. It does not need to be fast however. Cheap, but tropcial and at the sea would be preferred!
I thought about Panama, but I read that the internet sucks and it is expensive there.

Best,
Marss
