Has anyone figured out a way to get setup with a virtual number and internet connection anywhere you go?

Has anyone figured out a way to get setup with a virtual number and internet connection anywhere you go?
Be pluralistic with your Internet Service Providers and Mobile Operators. That's the short answer.
The long answer is – learn about the limitations of each connection technology and choose the set that suits you.
Things that work for me:
- Google Voice for making any international calls (~0.01 USD/min)
- VoIP for receiving calls and forwarding voice mail to my email
- Hushed with +1 number for SMS one time passwords
- Lycamobile prepaid SIM while in EU
- Local SIM with plenty of GB data
- iPhone with eSIM
- low data mode in iOS
- 5GHz WiFi whenever possible
- computer work primarily from co-working/co-living space
- DataFlow app on iOS to control the quota
- staying in touch with friends with messages instead of (video) calls
PS. I'm hyped about the Starlink low orbit satellite network as it will decrease the space Internet costs tenfold 😉
I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.
It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.
Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
The next products/features I have planned:
- 🛂 Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers
- 🎓Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate
- 🏛 Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers
Thanks a lot!
What are the best places right now in the Caribbean/LatAM? (Also cheapest flights/accommodation?) Asking from the US.
As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?
I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.
After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.
We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)
Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!
Winter is coming and I’m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?
I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.
I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.
Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.
Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??
Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.
Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.
Thanks a million. Much love.
I’m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (it’s ok if it’s not accepted in the US as I’m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?
Thanks in advance!
I have finally saved enough money to start investing. What company gives good, diversified access to stock, ETFs and mutual funds? Does it make sense to use company like Vanguard or Fidelity for that? I’m a EU/Poland citizen, how would I transfer my money back and forth without incurring significant fees?
I’m looking for international sim card services. I looked for other posts, and I know there are other alternatives, but I’m interested to have an international sim-card with only data plan, just to be used while I get a local one.
¿Any experience using any of these services?
I landed a remote job that is fully remote with only one team skype meeting a week. I’m looking to leave around March 13th and stay 1 - 3 months in each place. The first place I want somewhere that is warm with good surf. For the group video chat I need at least 5/2 down/up reliable internet. Any recommendations for a place that meets that end of March - April?
I’ve read through the forums / nomads list. I’ve already done Costa Rica and Indo and would like to try somewhere new. Currently looking at Sayuliata Mexico, Canary Islands, and Morocco though I think I’ll wait on the second two since they sound like they are better in the fall.
I’m a Swiss Citizen but full time traveler (living a few month there and there) and therefore don’t have a permanent residence/home anywhere in the world.
For this reason, I’m as well not registered in Switzerland and therefore don’t have medical care since I would have to pay at least 200$ monthly for medical care which I won’t use since I’m not living there.
As a in Switzerland unregistered Swiss Citizen I don’t have medical care in Switzerland but, however based on Swiss Law I’m always allowed to return to Switzerland, register and then get medical coverage (f.e. in a medical emergency).
So now I was looking for both, an international health insurance with good coverage and an additional travel insurance for my trips. Unfortunately every insurance I check, I got asked for a permanent residence - which I don’t have and don’t want to. So I don’t know what to fill out and if I still can get insurance without having a permanent residence.
I was wondering if there are any nomads here with a similar situation like me and (not registered anywhere and without a permanent residence)? If so, what health insurance, travel insurance you have and where?
PS. As well I’m not sure if it is kind of illegal not having a permanent residence anywhere plus where do I have to pay taxes?
Would be extremely grateful for any help on those matters - thanks so much!
Just tackling my legal will and bought a little $35 pack at my local Australian post office while I’m back in my birth country, but upon reading the first few pages it’s fairly apparent this is only an Australian Legal Will.
Has anyone tackled checking out their will situation on an international level?
I need to consider things like decentralised online assets that don’t exist in any particular country, any resources or experiences even just anecdotally appreciated
My boyfriend and I would like to spend a few months in Italy - nowhere major like Milan, maybe Tuscany region or more south. I’ve been there before, but not in a work capacity. We need decent internet both where we stay (maybe airbnb) and are hoping to find some cafes or work spots around.
I don’t see too much on here about Italy. And it certainly doesn’t make any list of ‘best places for digital nomads’ - so I’m curious about that. Is it a bad spot for people like us that survive off of the internet? Is it not reliable?
I appreciate any insights from your experiences!
When setting up international calls I typically google “[city] time”, or I google “EST time” or “PST time”. But depending on which website gives the answer it can take into account local hour (winter/summer) or NOT!
Any universal app/solution you people use to solve this confusion?
Browsing this forum a lot, I learned that the best option for mobile data is buying a local SIM card in pretty much every country I go to. Ok, that’s manageable.
Now I was wondering which mobile hotspot to buy, because I will have more devices with me that I want to connect to the Internet, and my girlfriend will have even more devices with her to connect, too.
When I was looking at just one manufacturer’s offerings, I’m already overwhelmed by the complexity of options.
Should I just use my main mobile phone’s hotspot feature for this?
Should I get a separate mobile hotspot device for that? Which one? Any recommendations?
How do you do this?
