Is it a good idea to travel with a cat?

by @andrea3018 9yr  | 14 comments

Hello Nomads,
I have a cat of 6 months and I would like to take another one.
Are you having problems about traveling with an animal?(in particular a cat).
What about two? Is it a bad idea?
Iโ€™d like to take another one because this one that I have is feeling lonely during the day due to not having anyone to play with him. I play with him some times but I canโ€™t put the whole daytime into him.

Thanks in advance for the answers.
Andrea

Do any of the people responding actually have animals? I travel with my dog and know several other people who travel consistently and successfully with animals (mostly dogs, but I do know of a cat that lives in a caravan :)).

I worry that a lot of the advice here, while coming from a kind-hearted place of caring about the cat, is a bit misinformed. There are many many countries that donโ€™t require quarantines. Some animals handle flying and moving around just fine (while others donโ€™t - and you need to be in tune with that). And Iโ€™m sorry, but telling someone flippantly to re-home their cat is like telling someone to leave their kids behind. Itโ€™s unthinkable for most of us and quite a crap thing to do to an animal that youโ€™ve committed to take care of.

If the cat is so very important to your life, I guess nomadism isnโ€™t really an option for you at the moment. One of the core bases for nomadism is minimalism and detachment. Traveling with a cat/dog/pet is just a frustration-generator, IMHO.

Not to beat this to death, but one thing I donโ€™t think anyone has mentioned is that many countries require pets to be quarantined for a period of time, even if all of the paperwork is up to date. It could be up to a month depending upon where youโ€™re going. So, you might not even get to enjoy the time with your cat at all for longer than you might expect if this happens.

This is your own choice. I recommend you give more weight to the opinions of people who actually have experience traveling with cats than to comments of people who havenโ€™t tried this.

My girlfriend and I took our cat with us to Chiang Mai, stayed there 5 months, then spent 6 months on Koh Samui and then 2 in Chiang Mai again. As much as I love my cat, I hate traveling with it.

Itโ€™s small enough to travel in a cat carrier in the cabin, between the seats. It behaved really well on the Madrid-Moscow flight, but got very annoying on the Moscow-BKK stretch. Poor thing. My girlfriend jokes that โ€“because I feel so much for our catโ€“ I have a worse flight experience than our cat actually does.

When flying between Chiang Mai and Koh Samui (stopover in BKK) the cat traveled in a kennel and it was a much more pleasurable experience for me. As for the cat โ€“ as soon as we let it out of the bag/kennel once in the apartment/house we were renting, it was fine. It loves exploring new places and birdwatching, but it hates the traveling part.

By the way, I feel silly talking about my cat in the neutral sense, even though she was neutered.

I didnโ€™t want to chime in because Iโ€™m heavily involved in Animal Welfare.

It really depends on many factors.

##What type of traveller are you?

Here are some general answers:

###a) Youโ€™re planning on just travelling within your own country:

If youโ€™re venturing on a road trip or moving city to city then itโ€™s not so bad. Cats can handle being moved around a relative amount but like @wanderingdev says, theyโ€™re territorial and they can get lost easily within the first few weeks if theyโ€™re outdoor cats - so just be aware.
###b) You are planning on being an expat.

If youโ€™re looking to settle down for extensive periods of time (years, preferably) then I approve of taking your pets rather than leaving them.

###c) Youโ€™re changing countries constantly.

Not good. Quarantine, vaccinations, stress of flying/long distance travel on a regular basis is not good for a pet - 6 months is too often. Lots of pets die from flying every year. Be careful how much stress you put on him.

Second cat

Introducing a second cat to a home can be extremely stressful. Like said before, cats are territorial. To introduce a second cat to a home requires at least 3 weeks of restraining the second cat to a room and building up the scent/contact. Itโ€™s laborious and takes forever. Whenever someone wants to adopt or foster a second cat, we have to explain in detail the best approach. Itโ€™s not for the faint hearted and itโ€™s not recommended to put your cat under stress before you subject him to travel (secondary stressor).

I also disapprove of you wanting a second pet because youโ€™re too busy to exercise/entertain him. It seems like your lifestyle is not suited for a pet at this time. If you want to travel and you donโ€™t have time to play, the best thing you can do is rehome him to a household who have time for him. We all make sacrifices for our pets: yours should be to either play more and travel less (frequently) or rehome him to a better suited household.

Thatโ€™s really explainatory. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
I guess I will not take a second cat and travel every 6 months with the cat.
I already traveled for long distances with him (for about 10 hours) on a truck which is constantly moving and dancing but he never accused any sympthon of stress or anything.
I think that I am lucky and have found a calm and queit cat which doesnโ€™t stress while flying or moving.
Thank you again to all.

Youโ€™re really not seeing that Every Single Person has said this is a bad idea? Think of your cat and itโ€™s needs, not yours. But you will do what you will do I guess. How do you even know you can stay for 6 months in a place? have you researched every country you will go to? You say you will solve the vet/shots thing as you go so what will you do if you get to a border and you donโ€™t have the right stuff for your cat so they take it from you?

I think this is a really bad idea. So many things will be harder not just on you but on the cat. Cats like routine and to know their territory. Constantly uprooting them would mean theyโ€™re constantly being traumatized. It doesnโ€™t seem fair to me. Plus you will have to deal with international vaccinations, quarantine in some countries, vets in various languages with various skill sets, finding places to live that accept pets (most I have seen donโ€™t), etc. Do both of you a favor and find a loving permanent home for your cat.

Ok. I will not take a new one but I donโ€™t think I will leave this one to someone else. Every 5-6 months I usually go back in my native city which is 800km far in distance. The cat travels with me for all these kilometers but never had any kind of traumatization, he just seems fine and quiet so I donโ€™t think he suffer while traveling.
International vaccinations could maybe be a problem as the vets but I will work it out and understand how to keep him without problems.
Thanks for your advice though.

Laws governing the movement of animals are usually extremely strict, both to prevent diseases but also to protect animal welfare for things like puppy trafficking. You would need to be 100% on top of all vaccinations and forms, and that is not an easy thing to do. If you do it correctly, the pet may still spend many miserable months in quarentine. If you make any mistake, you risk your animal being taken away and destroyed, and nobody wants that on their conscience.

Are you moving to another city where you will have a place for a substantial period of time, or moving around nomadically? This could make all the difference.

I agree with Mandy. If you are moving around internationally, be aware that quarantine and air travel is hard on the animal, and sometimes simply cruel.

I was planning about traveling and moving around every 4-6 months. What would you recommend? I was thinking about starting with the asiatic continent.(Thailand and so on)

I strongly recommend against this as well. Travel with animals can be traumatic. Check out the quarantine regulations. I live abroad, without animals, but have friends that have moved countries (on a more permanent basis). The fees, paperwork, and lead-time for even one of these countries might be prohibitive. Check out Thailandโ€™s rules here. Who knows what the next country will require, and that may be difficult or impossible to plan if you are traveling spontaneously. You might be required to go back to your home country first to redo the entire process you did for the first country you entered. Hard to say without doing the research, but I think the animal cruelty issue is the real issue. Are you thinking about the catโ€™s needs?

This is what it comes down to. What is more important, your wants or the wellbeing of the animal.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How can I travel the world with a cat?

by @robbie 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

We are seriously considering to quit our current job and travel the world for (at least) 1 yearโ€ฆ Beside the financial part (we still have a lot of unanswered questionsโ€ฆ), one of our main concerns is our 5 year old Sphynx cat, Pixieโ€ฆ

We love her so much, that we couldnโ€™t leave without herโ€ฆ I know, it will complicate things, but itโ€™s either that or not leaving at allโ€ฆ
Does anyone in here have experience with traveling with cats (or dogs)?
I hope I can get some advice from you guys!

Regards

Robbie
