Kindergarten experience for DN families. Know a worth-considering place?

by @alexku 7yr  | 1 comment

Hey guys. At the moment I and my wife have two sons - 4 and 1.5 yo. We spent 5 months in 7 Asian countries last winter. Lack of kindergarten was the number one problem. Thatโ€™s the only one reason that stops nomading all the time.
This time weโ€™d like to do the same on another continent. Weโ€™re thinking about Latin America or Africa. We need a good kindergarten and beautiful safe place with good warm weather.
Ideal scenario - Montessori preschool in not too dry but green place with the temperature about 23-30ยฐC/70-90ยฐF.
Could you please share your experience or the useful information from the friends or relatives?

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

How do you avoid settling in one place?

by @sukienniko 4yr 4 years ago  | 10 comments

As a follow up to my previous question (I guess I donโ€™t have the right to post links here?), but on a larger scale: if living as a nomad in a place for, say, more than a month (which will be beneficial for the sake of getting work done), how to you prevent yourself from getting too involved in the local society?

I find that every time I stay somewhere for a significant amount of time, I naturally start to settle into the idea that Iโ€™ll be there permanently, or at least long term. I guess this is human nature: wanting to have a stable lifestyle, with stable friends, relationship, workplace, recreational activities, etc. But, indeed, that is not my goal-- I believe the benefits of the nomadic lifestyle are far greater at this stage in my lifeโ€ฆ

So, for those of you who have successfully avoided settling somewhere time despite staying for months at a time, what strategies do you use to stay afloat, as in, not getting too deeply integrated locally?

Recommendations for a portable speaker system suitable for a DJ monitor while travelling? Preferring size over loudness

by @jackbarham 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Iโ€™ve got myself a DDJ 400 DJ controller, and the compact size makes it ideal to throw into my suitcase while I go travelling next year.

It made me wonder if there was a decent portable speaker system thatโ€™s loud (and clear) enough for light bedroom DJing I could pack alongside the 400 to practice new tracks and record mixes.

I currently have a Bose Soundlink Mini II which was surprisingly good for the job. Although I feel itโ€™ll probably damage if I keep pumping at full pelt, and itโ€™s not quite loud enough for what I wanted but not far off at all.

I ordered a pair of iLoud Micro Monitors, and although seriously impressed with the sound quality, I ended up returning them for KRK Rokit 5 G3โ€™s as they were too heavy for permanent (Digital Nomad) travelling so thought Iโ€™d get some solid DJ speakers in the meantime.

Where to find a coworking space in Sydney for a few days?

in Sydney , Australia by @keiththetraveller 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi Guys,

Iโ€™m visiting friends in Sydney for Christmas and am looking to hot desk for a few days. The dates are 20,21,22,23 December - the week before Christmas.

Iโ€™ve tried some coworkings but it works out really expensive for just four days. Does anyone know of anywhere I can try and hot desk for a few days for a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance,

Keith

Any DN's working on Blockchain projects

What work should I do as a DN?

by @simonl 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi everyone,

Iโ€™m having a bit of a difficult time trying to decide what to do thatโ€™ll allow me to make an income and be location independent.

2 years ago, after being in corporate IT software sales for 10 years I have basically just been traveling around, mostly in Asia. Its been great having no goals and its given me the time to recover from a burn out, work on myself and see opportunities in life again.

My challenge is that I see so many different things I could possibly do but havenโ€™t yet committed to one. I can easily get excited about something for a while but then it fades out. I also dont have any experience running my own business or in any other industries which is sometimes daunting.

Iโ€™m in a fortunate position that I have a monthly income to survive but Iโ€™m not making/saving money and feel like Iโ€™m ready to get stuck into something.

Iโ€™ve done my sailing skippers license, busy with NLP certification, working on a blockchain concept, working towards my permaculture design course certification and interested in Eco and sustainable living. Have half created a website. I want to help people while I live in a warm climate, leading a healthy and active lifestyle. And I listen to too much Alan Wattsโ€ฆ

Any tips or ideas?

Is WorldNomads enough or do I need additional insurance as a US citizen?

by @stefanlesser 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

Iโ€™m planning to leave the US in May, travel for at least a year, maybe longer, and it is unclear, if Iโ€™m going back to the US at all, except for brief visits.

Looking at WorldNomads I seem to be covered for pretty much anything bad that could happen. But what happens, if I have to be transported back to US? If I understand correctly, WorldNomads is out at that point and Iโ€™m left with whatever insurance I have there.

How do you deal with this?

DNs with US tax homes, how do you deduct travel expenses?

by @sumx 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

First post here, so be gentle

I am a half time digital nomad with a US tax home and tax season is coming up. Many of my travel expenses are legitimate business expenses and Iโ€™m sure others here have similar circumstances. I have a tax guy Iโ€™m generally very happy with and their advice is for me to deduct per diem meal & incidental expense (M&IE) rates as posted by the GSA for business travel days within the US, but actual M&IE for business travel days abroad since my out of pocket expenses beyond air / lodging tend to be much much lower while overseas. The logic seems solid, but it seems odd to approach deductions for domestic / international travel completely differently.

Generally, my nicer meals abroad tend to be either comped (press visits) or included in my lodging expense (hello executive lounge). Iโ€™m sure many other digital nomads fit a similar profile.

Iโ€™ve seen a number of resources that emphasize that spending less than the GSA/DOS per diem on meals and incidental expenses effectively gives you a free tax break for being frugal. For this reason (and despite my tax guyโ€™s advice) Iโ€™m finding it hard not to claim the full per diem amount while overseas. Iโ€™ve been in some very expensive locations with very high per diem rates per the Department of State including London, Paris and Dubai that would make for large deductions .

My question for the other digital nomads here with US tax homes is: how do you handle deducting your business related travel expenses? If you were in Dubai on business for a full day and the Department of State per diem meal and incidental rate was $183 / day, but you only paid $20 for food and $10 for cabs - would you still deduct 50% of $183 for the maximum benefit? If another member of your business was travelling with you would you deduct 50% of $183 x2?

My client didn't pay, is it illegal for me to discuss this with other contractors?

by @stratigos 8yr 8 years ago  | 15 comments

So I had a client go silent on me recently as soon as I brought up the topic of delinquent invoice payment. We typically speak daily, and otherwise have an excellent relationship. They love the work I do (at least, their praise seems authentic and on target). I love the work I do for them. We had a verbal agreement that I would be paid within 2 weeks of invoice. My contract allowed for 30 days / 4 weeks. At the second invoice, they went into 6 weeks without paying me.

I asked about it, and got no information in return. I kept sending emails twice a week to politely ask for information about what the issue was, and when I could expect payment. I received an extremely brief non-answer once, and more silence. I began to explore what other measures I could take, I honestly believed I had been scammed. They owed me a 5-figure sum (USD).

I work on about 8 different websites/codebases for this client. Each has a git repository, with a full history of all the other contractors, and naturally, their emails. I have paired up with a few of them on some projects (front end / back end dev relationships), so I know some of them on as personal a level a remote dev coworker can have.

I considered extracting all the emails from each project from the last yearโ€™s worth of commits, and then emailing each one individually to ask if theyโ€™ve ever had payment problems with this client. This would also obviously share information that I had not been paid for a time that violated the terms of our contract. We have a policy of being able to freely contact each other, via slack, or email, so its not like emailing them alone is violating some kind of privacy term on their end (or mine).

Would it be illegal for me to discuss this information with the other contractors? This concerns businesses incorporated in the USA. They are an LLC, if that matters. Could my client have grounds to seek some kind of legal retribution if they found out I did that? I think its only fair that they all know if I had been ripped off, and also may want to band together to fight the client if they too had also been ripped off. There is nothing explicitly stated in my contract that says I cant share information about my experience with them with other contractors (or anyone, really, outside of technology-NDA sort of things).

Note: I was certainly going to report them to Glassdoor, Freelancerโ€™s Union, BBB, and any other institution that I could, if this went on much longer. They finally caved after the 5th email or so, and paid me (again, without speaking to me about it, which is what bothers me the most). I also was going to start resorting to phone calls AND email bombardments (always polite :-P) first, before taking these next steps. This happened with the 2nd invoice in our relationship, which concerned me greatly, since I was told when hired that they had funds to pay me for even more hours than I was putting in. I am aware of the frequency with which freelancers get ripped off by clients (FU reports ~40%). I refuse to tolerate it, especially if we have been told otherwise, and am a strong advocate (re: activist) for workersโ€™ rights in general. Just an aside, Id have been far more tolerant, had they chosen to discuss things with me, and let me know what was happening - the silence drove me towards this aim.

Options for DNs to stay and live in New Zealand for 1-2 years?

in New Zealand by @zoxel 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

I already have a remote job that I like and do not want to change it. I was thinking of moving to NZ in order to live there for a while - may be one or two years or more if me and my wife like to be there.
But it looks like tourist visa will not allow me us to stay there more than 9 month and other visas require some job offer which is not easy to get. So I was thinking if there is any simple way to move there except finding a new job binded to location in NZ.
Me and my spouse are Russian citizens.
