Great island. Lived there for 20 years before I start traveling around. Don't forget it's expensive. All is imported, nothing grows there. And one other thing: you need a car. Public transport is bad and all locals have cars.

The cost of living ($4,000+ USD) is based on if you paid per night at one of the fanciest hotels in Minca. Minca is a small, out in the middle of nowhere place that has a collection of hostels advertising yoga retreats, nature, horse rides, partying, etc. along with some hotels. Locals who own homes in Minca either live there and make a living off of

HOWEVER, Santo Domingo is the capital of the country. Just like most Capitals in Latin America (Mexico City being the exception), it's not worth visiting much time. If you want to experience what the Dominican Republic has to offer (Beaches, Nature, Friendly Locals) as a nomad I would recommend Las Terrenas or Cabarete.

Tons of beautiful views and restaurants everywhere. If you like Latin America, you'll like San Juan. It is more expensive than other LatAm hubs, but it has better infrastructure and is safer. There are many different vibes you can get on the island. Old San Juan is like Europe but more colorful. Condado is closer to Miami but with a better beach. There is the only rainforest in America just 20 minutes away, not to mention all the other beautiful parts of the island. I wo

We live in Hill Country now so we're a bit removed. But it's beautiful area once you get away from the highways. A good tech scene. Not too expensive (~$2100 for a nice 2 bedroom apt) for the U.S. Has wineries and breweries galore. Not a great place if you are a recovering alcoholic (!). Cons: extremely hot in the summer; reaches 110 F (43.3 C) in summer afternoons from June - September. Not very diverse. Highways are loud and obnoxious.

It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1
