Looking for mid-term accomodation in Canggu (±3 months)

in Canggu , Indonesia by @tvr3000 8yr  | 11 comments

Hi,

any tips, suggestions? It’s for Jan-2015 through March-2015.

I’m ideally looking for a nomad house-style type of setup, in which 4 or more digital nomads all live together in a nice, modern villa. But I’m not sure if there are too many of those around in Canggu.

Otherwise a private room+bathroom or private apt. for around $600-800 will be fine (depending on the speed of the Internet).

Any help or tips are more than welcome : )

3G is pretty bad in Canggu.

I suspect this is due to the amount of people who now come here on holiday. The network probably was never built to support this amount of users.

Basically, the closer you get to the beach, the worst it gets. I was planning to work from home using the 3G but it was never very good. I had to go to some cafes/restaurants to use their wifi. Or just go to a cafe/restaurant that was in an area where the 3G was better.

The Nerdmanship Collective in Canggu seems like a pretty cool place to live. If anything, they will be able to help you figure things out I’m sure. https://web.facebook.com/theNerdmanshipCollective/

3G/4G in Canggu is very much dependant on your location and it’s certainly not bad in all places

Obviously, if you want to pick an apartment to work from, make sure you do a speed test using 3G when you are there

First speed test I was literally sitting on Echo Beach the other day:

And here’s what’s possible from AquaBlu apartments using 4g where I stayed previously

+1 for doing a speed test in potential apartments.

Regarding that:

Too true! Batu Bulong beach was terrible for Telkomsel 3G, but Berawa area was much better if I remember correctly.

Yeah those two speed tests are with Telkomsel

I’ve also got a couple of other sims from when I worked from home and had reasonable 3g speeds (~4meg) very consistently with Smartfren and Tri

Tri is the cheapest option around if you can find somewhere that has good signal

I found coverage for both Smartfren and Tri is crap in some areas so if you’re going to chose one sim, I’d go with Simpati (Telkomsel) as it has good coverage and 4g

@jnpkr 8yr

Depending where you stay mobile internet can be very good now. 4g speeds with Simpati are up to 30meg if you find somewhere with a good signal, which obviously opens up a lot more options rather than having to commit to a 12 month lease.

Arriving in wet season, you’ll probably have more leverage about monthly vs yearly rent anyway as the rental market will be slower.

Your budget will get you a nice private apartment if you want to go down that route. I’m currently staying in this place which includes 5meg internet and is monthly rental.

Facebook groups to look at include the following:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/345470402201472/?ref=ts&fref=ts
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1380848555535084/?ref=ts&fref=ts

https://www.facebook.com/groups/746999628699757/?ref=ts&fref=ts

The Bali Budget Housing site also has some good options

There was also a guy in the Bali Digital Nomads FB group who has a villa and was keen to rent out to other Digital Nomads. I think this was the FB page.

@jnpkr - how much is that place you’re staying at, if you don’t mind sharing the info? Also, those 5 meg - are they real (in speedtest/etc)?

Thanks for sharing it!

@jnpkr 8yr

It’s 8.5m IDR per month as I’m paying monthly rather than yearly

Internet was 4.9 meg when I checked earlier but it’s like any in Bali that isn’t completely reliable

Normally I find internet here is either fast or reliable but rarely both

The only option I’ve found for reliable and fast internet is Dojo coworking as they have 20 meg with a second redundant 20 meg connection

There are many options for that type of accommodation. Many friends rent a room in a villa (usually with swimming pool) for around 500USD per month.

Renting a whole house might be more complicated though - i.e. pay for 12 months at once as Miles wrote.

Join those Canggu related Facebook groups. Canggu community Fb group: people share a lot of info on them & often put up ads for rooms. Acroyoga Canggu Bali: a cool activity with a nice community, if you’re interested in trying something new & meeting new people who could help you, then that’s for you.

Btw, Ubud is a much better place to be a digital nomad.
I was in Canggu for a month or so, internet is slow, the DN community is tiny & it’s full of temptations/distractions (parties & short term “excited” crowd).
In Ubud you will meet much more nomads, have better internet & less temptations (less party & more relaxed atmosphere). No surfing in Ubud though! Just my 2 cents

@Miles ya, I wish I was staying here for a year, then I could get my own fast internet at a yearly rental.

Since I am not, airbnb and Facebook are the only options looking for accommodation. Filtering places for good internet on airbnb is a pain! They really need to a add a parameter in search for speed (They could get hosts to do speed tests regularly to verify speed)

@AdrienBe The community in canggu is growing. There is a co-working space here now, that is usually as crowded as Hubud nowadays, which is starting to get annoying! So the co-working space side of it is covered. Internet at houses is still troublesome. Luckily, I have found one with 4mbps until end of this month, then back to hunting again.

There are several Facebook groups for Bali villas for rent…

Also a lively community there… Was at a meetup there about 3 months ago . It was great!

AirBnB is how I found my place…

Btw if you want a great deal, you need to be ready to pay for 12 months at once. That’s how they roll…

I would love to join you in such a house. So let me know if you find one and need another housemate. I have been in Bali since September and need a new place since Jan. I will be here until March too.

Looking for a warm place, possibly near the sea with excellent wifi

by @mariaplslourdes 4yr 4 years ago  | 12 comments

hello  I’m planning my next trip (from January/February), and I’m looking for a place where it’s hot, with the sea, and good wifi.
At the moment I live in Paris and work with San Francisco times, so preferably I wouldn’t go to Asia.
I’m thinking, South Africa or South America, what do you recommend?
Thank you

Looking for something to prop up my Asus MB169B+

by @jbweimar 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

I recently purchased a second monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro 15". I use the Nextstand laptop stand to get my MacBook to eye level. I’m wondering what second monitor (without base) users are using to get their second monitor at the same level. I know of this company Elevate Stand (.com), but it seems a bit heavy and bulky (although I guess it must be somewhat, if it is to hold a monitor).

I'm looking for a European city with a great connection to the outdoors. Help?

by @justinbosco 7yr 7 years ago  | 23 comments

I’m in the middle of doing some research for our next destination within Europe and I’m hoping to get some suggestions from some outdoor enthusiasts who’ve spent time on the continent.

My favorite cities are Innsbruck, Austria and Bergen, Norway because you can be downtown having a beer one minute and then… boom… up the mountain in the middle of nowhere 15 minutes later. I’m looking for a similar place to spend a month or two this winter. Places like these are hard to find because “mid-size european cities with great hiking nearby” doesn’t return too many relevant results on Google. Great adventure towns are usually in the middle of nowhere, the kind of places you’ll need to rent a car to get to the grocery store, and places with good public transportation are usually concrete jungles. But places like Innsbruck and Bergen manage to combine the best of both worlds.

Has anyone come across similar places they’d recommend?

Short term (1-3 months) in Medellin?

in Medellín , Colombia by @jodie_taylor 7yr 7 years ago  | 30 comments

Hello all,

I’m just interested on anyones experience of renting short term (1-3 months) accommodation in Medellin, Colombia.

I had a look on Airbnb of course, lots of places, on the more expensive which isn’t a huge issue… I’m just wondering if in anyones experience it’s better to take a room for a week and shop around when I get there or whether I should just book a month upfront? I recently had a bad experience with Airbnb so not dying to go down that road again just yet if I’m honest.

I’ll be arriving in Medellin from November onwards over the Xmas period and likely through till January, maybe longer. Another friend is coming with me so we could potentially rent a 2 bed apartment, or I’d also be happy in a studio or a private room in a decent house even. I’m thinking El Poblano or Laureles, as we are two girls with limited Spanish.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Experience with "Adobe Connect" in Bali/Ubud or Canggu?

in Canggu , Indonesia by @hg.weber_nomads 7yr 7 years ago  | 1 comment

Hello, is there anybody around with experience with “Adobe Connect” meetings?

We are thinking to move to Bali - Canggu or Ubud, however our business demands working with this Adobe platform. Our concern is if latency is good enough and connection stable to do the teaching job from Bali to European located Adobe Connect servers.

Thanks so much fore any hint on this.

You can test the connection quality with Adobe Connect from your location to different servers worldwide from this page - for Europe there is a UK-based server listed to test:

Thanks again!

Has anybody encountered a travel gear mfr that intentionally makes crappy-looking gear?

by @octavient 7yr 7 years ago  | 8 comments

Has anybody ever encountered a travel gear manufacturer that makes gear that is solid and durable, but that is intentionally designed to look old and crappy? For international travel, I want good, durable gear, but I’m uncomfortable walking around with slick, brand-new-looking, expensive-looking gear (especially with my family in tow). I’m happy to snatch up any good used gear (reduce, reuse, recycle) that we’re lucky enough to encounter, but selection is limited, and durability is often compromised. Seems like there’d be a decent market for some durable but ragged-looking travel gear. What i have in mind is luggage, backpacks, laptop cases, smartphone cases, camera bags, infant/toddler carriers, etc. I’m sensitive to the preppy fad of clueless, well-off westerners dressing up like the poor in naive but trendy mockery, but that’s not what I’m after, here. I just want good gear that doesn’t put a target on my back as we traipse around various parts of the world. Anybody have any thoughts on this…?

Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

What's the difference between Ubud and Canggu in Bali?

in Canggu , Indonesia by @edmoyse 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Hey nomads,

I’m hoping for some advice from people who’ve lived in Ubud or Canggu. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each place? If you’ve lived in both, which did you prefer and why? (e.g. surfing vs yoga, or varying WiFi availability, or better accommodation, or number of nomads)

Thanks!

Looking for somewhere with snow

by @jb510 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

We spend a ton of time in the tropics and are craving a little bit of winter. There was a thread about ski towns: What are good ski towns for digital nomads? but I’m actually wondering about non-ski towns.

  • On the cheaper side
  • Reasonable internet and/or coworking
  • Has good public transit
  • Has snow without being mind numbingly cold

Anywhere on the planet is of interest from Bulgaria to New Zealand, from Harbin to Matroosberg… i don’t really care where on the planet it is, just that it’s not to hard to get to/from.

Canadian resident looking for advice on reducing taxes

by @yesmad 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

My girlfriend and I are Canadian residents that make a full-time income online, though affiliate commissions and ad revenue. As of right now, we have bank accounts in the US and most income is earned in USD.

The thing is that our income taxes are quickly rising to the point that it’s absurd and would be well worth the time and money spent to reduce them somehow.

Can anyone comment on our options here?

We’ve considered moving around and not staying in any one country long enough to owe taxes anywhere, but that seems very difficult as a Canadian resident:

Reading up on the stipulations for being a “resident for tax purposes” in Canada, they basically want you to sell all of your belongings and cut ties with your family in order to not be a taxed resident. Is this true?

Another option we’re interested in is incorporating in an offshore country that has low or zero corporation taxes. Does anyone have any suggestions here?

I’ve been looking into setting up a Canadian corporation, but the corporation tax is still upwards of 15%, plus you’re taxed on what you take out of the corporation.

If anyone here has knowledge about any of this I’d love to hear your advice.

Looking for an LTE carrier/plan that covers most of Europe and is good for tethering?

by @thom801 8yr 8 years ago  | 13 comments

I’m going to be traveling through and working in many countries in Europe this year and I’m hoping to either use my T-Mobile iPhone 6 (should work based on my research) or I can buy a hotspot to tether internet. This way I can work anywhere and not have to be asking for wifi passwords etc all the time. Does anyone know a good carrier/plan/hotspot? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also: I’m always looking for great designers and developers to work with. Contact me if you’re interested. I have plenty of work for you

What's a normal rate for accomodation in Manila?

in Manila , Philippines by @acdc 8yr 8 years ago  | 4 comments

Coming here for business for 1st-30th June. Accommodation seems very expensive even a way out of the city, around $700 USD for anything remotely decent. Two bedroom (ideal, meeting someone) is around $1200 USD… almost more than you can get on Air BnB in Australia for something that’s way out in the burbs & low quality.

Any ideas or is this normal rate? Hardly the super cheap haven I’ve read about :frowning:

Sign up for Nomad House: Project Austin

Hey Nomads!

So Nomad House: Project Austin is coming together. We found a better house with a better location and living arrangement, and we are just looking for one more digital nomad to join our little experiment from Feb. 1st- Mar. 1st.

Living options:
$900: Private Room

$700: Shared room

The house is at S. Park Dr. and Powell Court in Austin Texas.

To give you an idea of the awesome people you’d be living with, the residence so far are:

@tikhon - Hailing from San Fran (for now!), seasoned developer, specializing in dev/ops, sysadmin and the non-tech side of the startup world such as Fundraising/recruiting/sales. You may be be familiar with the 2 successful start-ups that he co-founded - Scribd + Parse. Avid rock climber, photographer and looking to make another awesome project this time free from VC’s overlord control! Rockin!

@maxholzheu - Hailing from Guatemala, alum of Build Campus in SF. Committed to paving a courageous path to freedom using technology. His life philosophies are *stop planning, start moving *never stop learning. Currently kicking ass as a web developer for Junto Studio, with remote work privileges.

We met working at a company is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia called Mindvalley (you may have heard of it). When he’s not helping artist promote themselves with his startup Mumora, he’s either eating street cooked grub in a hole in the wall in South East Asia, blogging about marketing or just being a tall shaggy good dude!

Me - I’m Brandon, you can check out some of the crazy stuff I’ve done in the past: like the time I biked from German to India, or the time I became a Thai commerical star! Life is random, I know! Currently working for a startup called Bucketfeet, that makes cool sneakers using designs submitted by artists from all over the world! I convinced them to let me move to Austin and work remote, so let the adventures begin. I also like salsa dancing, personal development books, maps and anything with 2 wheels!

You - Can’t wait to see who are 5th nomad will be!
