Low cost + Nomad community in Europe?

by @joaoalbertofn 7yr  | 8 comments

Hi Guys! Iโ€™m planing to kick start my Nomad Life style in July, and Iโ€™m researching cities in Europe that can provide three things:

  1. Low cost (Iโ€™m earning money in Brazilian Real, not Dollars). Especially regarding rent.
  2. Some kind of Digital Nomad community and Co-working spaces.
  3. Security. Low criminality.

All other characteristics (Weather, english speaking), are not as important as the ones above.
=D

Thank You so much for so many replies guys!

Malta, Spain and Italy seems very interesting.
Iโ€™ll defiantly have a check on then.

This will help me a lot!

Iโ€™d say give malta a look. Digital nomad community isnโ€™t quite here yet unless, but itโ€™s very safe, rentโ€™s relatively cheap and sunny with lots of activities.
In terms of rent you could probably find something on airbnb for 20-30Eur a night, just book early as it gets busy. Outside of the central touristy areas will be even less then that.
Planning on opening some office space/co-working space here soon, so if itโ€™s open by July iโ€™ll hock you up with free membership and youโ€™re welcome to use it all you want

I think Malta should be a growing hotspot for digital nomads. I spent 3 years there in school, plan to come back for awhile this fall.

Trowing in a couple of options:
Bulgaria:
Sofia โ€“ coworking spaces, there are nomads during the warm months. It is really safe. Learned from a travelling friend โ€“ use homeaway instead of airbnb for longer term flats, he said it is cheaper.
Plovdiv โ€“ even cheaper rent, there are a few folks based there, dont know what the coworking situation is at the moment, there was one new space and some problems with it.
Maybe also worth checking:
Belgrade, Serbia;
Kiev, Ukraine;
Estonia.

Found a few spots in Budapest recently for around 600 euro/mo, but nothing cheaper for a furnished 3 bedroom in Murcia. I am checking out the link/blog posts. Thanks for all the info.

I donโ€™t know about the community piece, but for the budget thing, I can tell you the most affordable places Iโ€™ve based in almost 5 years of hopping around Europe have been:

:: Croatia (Split)

:: Slovenia (Kobarid and Ljubljana, though Iโ€™m guessing you could live very cheaply in lots of places)

:: Spain (Toledo was the cheapest of my Spain trips - the south was still affordable, but more expensive than I expected)

:: Belgium (Ghent is artsy and amazing and full of interesting people and living there was incredibly affordable)

:: Italy (main cities can be expensive apartment-wise, but smaller cities and towns, especially in the south, can be very affordable)

Weโ€™ve also just booked the summer in Bosnia and I was delighted by the prices there. Weโ€™ve rented a three bedroom for what weโ€™d normally pay for one.

As a woman traveling solo during most of those trips, every single one of the places above felt very safe to me. Obviously itโ€™s always good to research the neighborhood youโ€™re staying in, but in general Europe is a very very safe place to be.

Here are some of my real budgets. Keep in mind that Iโ€™m a middle-of-the-road traveler, so you could definitely do cheaper! http://gigigriffis.com/category/budgeting-saving/

I found that the resorts in Murcia Spain that are undersold since the housing crisis are good places to start. The co-working spaces are not really here, but it fits the other two criteria. Our #1 criteria is high speed reliable internet, then price, then location/security. I travel with my community (family of 5) so thatโ€™s less important for us.

The best weโ€™ve found so far: For ~350 euro/mo in the low season, you can live in a furnished 3 bedroom apartment, with access to pools, golf course, golf club/restaurant/bar, restaurants, etc, everything included except electric costs. 10mbps/2mpbs wireless internet, UK satellite tv, water, and towels/linens, all included. Itโ€™s a fairly good deal if you are self sufficient and donโ€™t need to go to a co-working space to GTD (get things done). Or you can get a two bedroom for ~300/mo. and turn one room into an office if you need an official desk area, or get the 3 bedroom and place two desks in one room, and get a roommate to split the rent.

We found many of these units on Air B&B, but if you google you can find them directly and avoid the booking fee. Some resorts are more deserted than others, but still worth taking a look if you like some relax at home, and only 30 minutes to Murcia, and 15 to the beach.

The Polaris World resorts didnโ€™t fare well during the housing crisis:
Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort
Las Lomas
Terrazas de la Torre Golf Resort
Condado de Alhama
Mar Menor Golf Resort

Some better than others, but if you can swing a car, the remote-ness of them makes a great home base, while you explore surrounding areas on the cheap. boa sorte.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

Best place in South East Asia to live for 6+ months per year

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

We're looking for a country in South East Asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

Anyone know of any groups or resources for Ph.D. students working on dissertation while living as a digital nomad? I know there are several virtual writing groups around, but wondered if there were any specifically for digital nomads, particularly those who are dissertating.

Thanks!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 4yr 4 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How do you invest internationally as a nomad?

by @mateuszwieloch 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

I have finally saved enough money to start investing. What company gives good, diversified access to stock, ETFs and mutual funds? Does it make sense to use company like Vanguard or Fidelity for that? Iโ€™m a EU/Poland citizen, how would I transfer my money back and forth without incurring significant fees?

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks
Mark

How to ship bikes from US to Europe?

by @ld 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,
Iโ€™m preparing to travel again to Europe, but this time I want to bring our bikes. 2 road bikes. Iโ€™ll be traveling from USA to the Milan or Rome airport.

Iโ€™d appreciate hearing your thoughts, experience and tips on traveling with a bike. I plan on being fairly stationary with our location and staying in one spot for 2-3 months, then (hopefully train) to another spot for 3 months, etc. So itโ€™s the initial international flight Iโ€™m most concerned about. But realistically, I think a regional flight will be inevitable with the bikes, too.

I know a bike box will be huge and we will have to break down the bike, thankfully our bikes are fairly light weight. Iโ€™m expecting it to be a huge painโ€ฆbut I think the reward of having a good bike to roam around with will be invaluable. Especially since we will be staying in rural areas and donโ€™t want to rent a car.

General range of cost?

Anyone bring their bike and glad they did? โ€ฆWish they didnโ€™t?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!
