Red Tide every summer I've been there. It kills the fish which wash up to the shore and make the air toxic- hurts your lungs and eyes. BUT, other than that Sarasota has some cute hipster places that I've enjoyed. I wouldn't plan a trip here unless I lived nearby.

I don’t recommend living here full time. The summers are unbearably hot and humid and you have to drive 1+ hours to the closest beach. Actually, you have to drive everywhere because everything is a 20+ min drive. Traffic is terrible and everything is under construction. There are lots of bugs, mosquitos, gators, roaches, etc… You can be here for months and not do all the different entertainment, restaurants, experiences the Orlando area has to offer. Lived there from 2015 till 2023, the COL goes up every year. The rental market is in constant Flux, changing every 3 days. It is a retirement community/city with a population that spikes from Nov till end of may with "Snow Birds", Retires that live part of the year there. Hurricane Ian destroyed most of the well known beaches. If your smart and are staying long term (6 months plus)You can have a COL under $3,000/month at the time of writing this. I guess if you're a nomad this doesn't matter much, but the long-term job pickings here are slim and among the most underpaid for a US city. There seems to be a tacit rent floor that means you won't find a good deal on housing. A lot of people don't seem very invested in their interpersonal relationships here since their ties to the area are often transient.

We live in Hill Country now so we're a bit removed. But it's beautiful area once you get away from the highways. A good tech scene. Not too expensive (~$2100 for a nice 2 bedroom apt) for the U.S. Has wineries and breweries galore. Not a great place if you are a recovering alcoholic (!). Cons: extremely hot in the summer; reaches 110 F (43.3 C) in summer afternoons from June - September. Not very diverse. Highways are loud and obnoxious.

I spent 4 months working here during summertime. It's one of the best summers I have ever had in my life. The city is just amazing and offers dozens of outdoor activities. There are so many different places such as parks, lakes, hills, mountains, beaches, etc. Also, you can feel the Californication vibe on every step.
