One Month in Mexico - Where to Stay?

in Mexico by @yuvalbarhai 8yr  | 15 comments

Hello,

Iโ€™m planning to fly to Mexico mid October for 1 month. Iโ€™m working on my laptop (like many others I guess) so I need a reliable wifi connection.
My budget is about $1500/month.
I was looking at Playa Del Carmen and renting a flat through Airbnb is not too expensive since I get a major discount for staying a month.
I donโ€™t really care about nightlife. I want a place with good vibes and I want a place near the ocean or with nature around me.
Does anyone have any thoughts about Playa Del Carmen? and Maybe suggestions of other place in Mexico?

Thank you!

@yanokwa and I stayed in Playa Del Carmen for November and December 2014 and had a great time. October is before the peak season so you should have no trouble finding a relatively inexpensive place. I recommend looking for a residential neighborhood not just aimed at tourists. Thereโ€™s so much to do in the area thatโ€™s a cheap colectivo ride away, thereโ€™s good food from every region of Mexico and lots of interesting people both local and expat. Itโ€™s easy to find opportunities to do things like volunteer in schools. The Internet wasnโ€™t super fast but it was pretty reliable and sufficient for our needs. Itโ€™s a place weโ€™d consider returning to.

Puerto Escondido on the Pacific side is also nice. Less to do but the beaches and the food are great so itโ€™s a nice place for focusing on work. If youโ€™re flexible on nature, Mexico City is amazing.

@lognaturel what neighborhoods would you recommend in PDC?

Looking for spots for December/Jan (since officially heading to Pto Escondido Feb-March).

@dani December and January is going to be super peak tourist season so I personally would tend to head to some place thatโ€™s not the beach like San Cristobal de las Casas. BUT itโ€™ll still be amazing Iโ€™m sure!

We stayed in Zazil-ha at CrocCondos which was totally great and another place at around calle 6N and avenida 45 (near the Walmart) which was also good (both low-season pricing). Iโ€™d not want to be too close to la Quinta (5th Ave, the party street) and I think things between calle 8 and calle 38 close to 5th tend to be more expensive and touristy.

I love Playa del Carmen, but Iโ€™m a diver. If you are into snorkeling and or diving itโ€™s a great place. There are lots of smaller towns in/around the Riviera Maya, but itโ€™s the biggest and has the best nomad cred.

If you head towards Puerto Vallarta area I highly recommend checking out Yelapa for at least a few days. Itโ€™s gotten a little more touristy the past few years with daily boats of day-trippers, but otherwise is still pretty idyllic. Be warned that the internet is ~1mbps when I was there last year, and goes down periodically โ€” they only got electricity in 2003 and internet in 2011.

PV itself isnโ€™t my thing, too busy/loud/overrun. Have heard Sayulita and Oaxaca are both amazing, but never been myself.

I suggest Sayulita. Playa del Carmen feels bigger and more touristy, a party town, really. Sayulita is surfers and smoothies, beaches and yoga, chilled out and international.

Whatโ€™s the internet situation in Sayulita, @gigigriffis? Booking a place in Pto Vallarta in January, and looking for other places that have a decent connection where I can work.

Or maybe the better question is this: whatโ€™s the norm as far as acceptable internet speeds in MX?

Depends where you stay. My place was a bit off and on, but another nomad I met had an amazing connection at her place. So it seems the town is well connected, you just have to be careful where you book (which I assume is the case in most of the world).

Heading to Puerto Vallarta for 3 months starting sept. We just sorted an apartment via some property managers we found at http://www.vivanuncios.com.mx/ for $450/mth, 20MB down, new build, great location, but you will need spanish to get those level deals (my girlfriend is fluent, I was getting quoted 3 times that when asking in english). Iโ€™ve never been to mexico but my gf loves PV, supposed to be great once you stay south of the resorts. But if you want something more relaxed, Sayulita might be more your thing, from what Iโ€™ve read.

Canโ€™t speak much for beach towns in Mexico, but I lived in Oaxaca for a few months earlier this year and I recommend staying in the city for sure. Itโ€™s easy enough to get to the surrounding (gorgeous) mountains via collectivos or buses. Rent is cheap there too and the food is amazing. October, however, is the start of the snow bird season there, so be ready for a bunch of cranky old white people taking over the place.

I highly recommend San Cristobal too. Cool little artsy town with cheap food and places to stay. Also easy to get out and see the mountains and canyons around there.

Do be aware that internet in Mexico is just not that great. Can be fairly slow and not all that reliable in most places.

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Hi, my name is Eric and I am a remote worker from Norway. Me and a friend is flying into Gran Canaria on Friday and spending two weeks in San Agustin on the south side of the Island.

After that we are pondering about staying in La Gomera. Does anyone of you have an experience staying there or are there anyone of you staying there now? :)

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.

Where do I get good legal advice/support to have a long-term stay in Portugal?

in Lisbon , Portugal by @mzorrilla 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Hello, everyone!

My idea is to stay as low as 6 months and as long as a year (maybe, who knows) over Lisbon after doing some analysis from many cities in Europe.

I'm an Argentinian and Chilean (both nationalities) so... no Euro-pass for me (getting my Italian nationality could take 2 years easily). I'm also a remote worker and I have a really good income (I work for a Silicon Valley company) so I can show more than enough resources to stay in the country.

Everything I see online doesn't inspire me much confidence (most sites looks a bit scammy) and this is not a "vacation stay"... I want to be clear my head far away from Argentina right now. If someone has a good website, recommendations, etc I will super appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone want to share an airbnb villa in Mexico?

in Mexico by @wouternomad 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

I will be traveling/working through Mexico with my dog February to April. My plan is to stay in Sayulita for about 2-4 weeks, then travel south along the cost.

Is there anyone who wants to share an airbnb apartment? I was thinking of renting a private villa, but because these are large and have multiple rooms, I was wondering if there are fellow nomads wanting to share? Iโ€™m open to other locations as well (Puerto Vallerta, Oaxaca, and everything in between these two locations.

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

What investment options are open to e-resident?

by @64tankman 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I know from experience that if you have residential status in countries where IG (a broker) serves, you can buy stocks and other assets through this broker. But I wonder what doors to the stock market, asset market or broker can be unlocked with e-residency? Some banks open a terminal for customers to buy assets overseas too, is one of the e-residency friendly bank offering a good portfolio of assets to invest in?

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 4yr 4 years ago  | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Donโ€™t get me wrong, that is all fine, but I was hoping to meet some international nomads! Any advice?

Where to move for tax purposes as a non-US citizen?

by @mender 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I am a New Zealander looking to travel for a couple of years in different countries. For this purpose I would ideally like to shift my company to a lower tax territory where I will live part time, as I am currently taxed at roughly 33% in New Zealand, however itโ€™s closer to 40% when I add in all the hidden taxes.

With a move I wonโ€™t be living in NZ so Iโ€™ll no longer be obliged to pay any tax after 320 days.

I ideally would wish to be a tax resident of the country I incorporate in. What country is easiest to do this through? A large chunk of my business relies on PayPal which requires your bank account to be from the same country your company is registered. Thus I canโ€™t do anything such as BVI or small islands.

Tbh my best bet looks to be Dubai Free Zones at this point and I can do some travel in europe from there.

Cheap Cities in Mexico & South America with Fastest Wifi

in Mexico by @jnomad30 5yr 5 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi Guys,
Iโ€™m planning out my next stops after leaving Medellin, Colombia soon where I can hunker down and get some work done with fast wifi and cheap living. Will be in Mexico first so starting a look there but wondering if coming back down to South America might make more sense?
My main concerns are budget and fast enough wifi for me to work from home. Other considerations are some nomad community (ideally also some English speaking expats as my Spanish is basic) and warm enough weather.
Thanks in advance!

Property Ownership - should digital nomads buy properties?

by @sparrow_23 5yr 5 years ago  | 16 comments

I have been a digital nomad for the last couple of years. I have always worked in tech and now run a couple of profitable online businesses that give me a reliable income and allow me to fund a nomadic lifestyle.

I recently exited one of my businesses and I am considering to invest the income from the sale in properties, mainly for 2 reasons:

a) I donโ€™t want to keep wasting my money in renting apartments across the cities I stay

b) I believe in properties as investment and I want to diversify my investment portfolio (mainly stocks)

After years of constant wander from one place to another, now I am the type of digital nomad who sticks to few locations: I mainly rotate across 4 places each year (San Francisco, Medellin, Berlin, Bali). Buying a house in each of those location would be difficult and too expensive. Therefore, I was wondering if there was any sort of service that combines an investment opportunity with the ability to access different properties around the world (even if just for a limited time per year) ?

Imagine living in 4 cities per year and having a house in each place that you can exclusively use for 3 months and at the same time having your investment growing (this depending on the market, of course). Wouldnโ€™t that be great? I believe it could be done via a property fund selling you a share and giving you access to some of their properties for a limited timeframe each year.

Has anyone heard of anything like that?

Thanks!
