Politics question: Who Votes?

by @raisononline 8yr  | 15 comments

In the UK we have a significant vote about whether to stay in the EU. Iโ€™ll be abroad during the vote but will vote by postal vote in advance. I imagine this would be trickier if I were more nomadic; if I didnโ€™t have an established base in the UK.

Iโ€™m curious to how others engage with their national political processes. Iโ€™ve met many Nomads who are quite politicly minded. Does this translate to being involved with the established political realities of their homeland?

Would love to hear what you do or donโ€™t do. More an exercise of curiosity than anything else.

Cheers

Quick followup to this โ€“ if you dropped your ballot off at a US Embassy abroad, donโ€™t assume they did their job and sent it via diplomatic pouch! Check the status online. I hand-delivered mine to the embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria over a month ago and it hasnโ€™t been received in my state. So Iโ€™m having to mail a write-in ballot from Cyprus today.

Wouldnโ€™t recommend the embassy drop-off for the futureโ€ฆ was like Fort Knox getting in there, they said they would โ€œmake an exception for meโ€ since I didnโ€™t phone to warn them I was coming before I arrivedโ€ฆ???

Voted very easily (Washington state), entirely digital albeit with a kludge adding my signature in a PDF editor; to re-register, just needed my driverโ€™s license details. Iirc around half of US states have something similar or at least vote-by-fax

Just a quick update - in case anyone hasnโ€™t seen it, here is a handy overseas voting tool from Avaaz for US Citizens:

doesnโ€™t that just put you on a mailing list?

I would hope notโ€ฆ it says โ€œRegister, request a ballot, get updatesโ€ - Iโ€™ve seen a lot about their โ€œtoolโ€ on the Web lately, so I think itโ€™s an actual interactive tool.

For a voting tool - that site takes political sides. Itโ€™s more of a make sure you vote hillary from abroad tool.

I did just find this on https://www.fvap.gov/ for those also needing to request their ballots.

I would still be interested in hearing how long itโ€™s taken other people to receive theirsโ€ฆ am going to try to use an electronic submission option for the request, still mailing the paper copy in and hope that speeds it up, but great to have the online emergency ballot backup:

Many States allow you to submit your FPCA electronically and all States allow for at least one form of electronic transmission of your blank ballot. Mail delivery times will vary based on where you are and customs requirements. Mail your materials early enough to account for the mail delivery time. Using electronic options can help reduce the ballot transit time for your election materials.

What to do if you do not receive your requested State absentee ballot
If you requested your absentee ballot and havenโ€™t received it from your State at least 30 days before the election, you can use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). The FWAB is an emergency backup ballot. This backup ballot can be completed using our FWAB online assistant, by filling out the PDF or picking up a hard copy version from your Voting Assistance Officer. The online assistant will guide you through the process of completing the form. Once you complete the form, you will be able to download and print the PDF package to sign and send to your election office. This PDF package even includes a pre-addressed and postage-paid label so you donโ€™t have to worry about finding stamps! Donโ€™t forget a security envelope. (Use a separate blank envelope and write โ€œSecurity Envelopeโ€ on it and place your voted ballot in it. This keeps your vote private.)

@whereskristin @Wayland_Chin and other Americans - how long did it take for you to receive your absentee ballot? Iโ€™m just getting together the application for mine now, hoping I can receive it by mail in Bulgaria by October 9 (when a lease ends) but if I could pick up an absentee ballot at an embassy that would be even better.

I gave the paperwork to the us consulate, and waiting for the next step. Donโ€™t know what happens next. Either they will mail something or email me.

Hm, interesting. I actually e-mailed my representative the ballot request. Since my state also allows receipt of a ballot by e-mail, I will receive an e-mail Sept 23 with my ballot attached for printing, they said.

I still have to snail mail a paper copy of the ballot request to them as well, but itโ€™s really nice to have these e-mail options.

I think that itโ€™s extremely important for expats to vote back in their home country. I would assume that most nomads and expats are at least somewhat informed about issues and can use what theyโ€™ve learned living abroad to formulate opinions and make decisions about how they feel about domestic issues. I have always voted in the US via absentee ballot and I think that you can even turn them in at embassies. I found out this year that thereโ€™s even a democratic primary category for US citizens living abroad. Pretty cool http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/sanders-wins-primary-contest-democrats-living-abroad-n542731

All of us who can should exercise our right to vote, regardless of country of citizenship. In my opinion itโ€™s the very lowest level of effort to engage in the political process. Anyone and everyone who is lucky enough to have the right to vote should take advantage of this gift and use it.

US citizens can turn in their absentee ballot to the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.

Iโ€™m back in the US in September and Iโ€™m going to try to figure out the voting thing. Itโ€™s complicated because I donโ€™t have a permanent address anywhere and Iโ€™ve no idea where Iโ€™ll be come election time. So I might just register in my momโ€™s state and get an absentee ballot sent to her address and have her vote for me. Iโ€™ve not voted since I voted for Clinton in '92 but this election is scary so I feel like I need to figure something out.

I registered for postal voting before I left Australia. Iโ€™m going to be here when we have the next federal election though so must find out what I need to do about that.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?
