This is the most realest country I've visited next to my homeland in Jamaica. Streets are made of dirt. Horses still pull carts. Very little English spoken. You cannot easily find things you need so bring all your necessities to start with. I have barely seen a street light, the traffic can be unbelievable. First time in Sal and its been such an easy experience. From the airport to getting settled in. Everyone is so helpful and warm hearted. Cost of living is very reasonable - 5€ to eat at a restaurant (fish, sides, wine and dessert). I highly recommend making contact with a local taxi driver. Its easy to set up a daily agreement for your time on the island. Spending 5€ a day to be taken into town and back to airbnb. I am sure you could get it much much cheaper but I was happy to pay a bit more

I live here with my girlfriend close to Santa Cruz now for around 1 year. We lived before in Alicante and Gran Canaria. Lots to discover if you like Hiking or Surfing. I can recommend Fuerteventura (specifically El Cotillo) if you like surfing, village vibes, yoga, and watersports. As for places in El Cotillo, Cocoworking seems great, also Triton's Coffee Lab for work and food. I stayed in Corralejo, but it feels much more touristy.

I am not sure where some of these “stats” came from but Liberia is an English speaking country though many people speak a form of West Indian slang. It is not a good habit to go into a country for a short time, associate w/a small group who don’t represent the majority and write slanted comments from your limited perspective.

Most people I speak to confirmed my belief that Marrakesh is a place to visit for a few days max. The excitement and chaos are novel for a short time, particularly in the old medina. Taxis in Istanbul are a big problem even for locals. Public transport is convenient and comfortable. If you need to call a taxi, I recommend using an app. "Bitaksi" can be used. I've lived in New York City - Brooklyn - for over 20 years. For visiting tourists, the best neighborhood to stay in is NOT Bushwick. Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Ft. Green or Brooklyn Heights is preferable. Plenty of good transportation in those areas - subway, buses or Uber. Easy access to beaches in Long Island and New Jersey. There's plenty to do in NYC. Great restaurants, Broadway plays (!), and in the summer you frequently can catch a free concert.

I guess if you're a nomad this doesn't matter much, but the long-term job pickings here are slim and among the most underpaid for a US city. There seems to be a tacit rent floor that means you won't find a good deal on housing. A lot of people don't seem very invested in their interpersonal relationships here since their ties to the area are often transient.

I wanted to share my experience as it's unlike any I've heard prior to my arrival. I've been in Cape Town for a month now and as a 24 yo woman traveling with 2 other friends I must say that I have never felt so unsafe. I stay in waterfront/ green point which are relatively very safe neighborhoods, yet I get stalked every day, both my friends have been robbed in a safe area around lunch time. As a local, born and bred Joburger, I can tell you that there is a lot to love about this city if you know where to look. For the most part, it's orientated around suburbian living. The main city (Johannesburg CBD) is for the most part a no-go because of crime, but if you know some locals you should definitely check it out there are amazing restaurants, theatres and museums to experience there. Stayed for 5 days in Tulum in March 2023, here are a few things to consider. -The Pros are: there a ton of very solid accommodations for ~$50 per night on a short term basis (1BR apartment, pool, etc.). If you have money, stay in Lomas. That's it. The other areas of the city which every Samantha, Bryan, and pink-haired person named Leaf have mentioned are all worth visiting and enjoying, but just stay in Lomas. Quiet, less population, no dust, and most importantly, you can avoid the broke Americans from Bushwick or WeHo who eat at Orinoco every night to save money.
