Should I jump on a cheap Chiang Mai - Krabi ticket or are these prices typical?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @lucha54 | 5yr  | 9 comments

Hey all, I know I should probably be asking this on a travel forum but I figure there are plenty of you in Chiang Mai that would have the answer for meโ€ฆ Iโ€™m coming for two months Dec/Jan (yay!) and looking at tickets for a side trip by plane to Krabiโ€ฆ round trip is ~$76 right now (probably not including checked back). Iโ€™m always anxious and book things too far in advance, but was wondering if I can expect to get a price like this (i.e. at least under $100 return, nonstop) closer to last minute. Especially since January is busy travel season for Thailandโ€ฆ thanks for your input !!! Canโ€™t wait to meet some of you in Chiang Mai.

Thanks so much for those links! If the route is half of what is usually is, then I might just book it now and buy that add-on that lets me change the date (and has some other benefits, I forget). That way it makes no difference in price, iโ€™ve got it booked, and can change the date if needed.

Hi Lucha,

My advise: subscribe to newsletters from carriers flying from Chiang Mai (+Bangkok). This will keep you up to date for all offers.

I personally just like to grab offers spontaneously. Especially within SE Asia, with the high competition between carriers.

hey thanks! Any newsletters you recommend subscribing to? I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s competition in this case as Air Asia is the only company that flies direct Chiang Mai - Krabi but there could be other places worth visiting as well that I donโ€™t know about and could practice some spontaneity by just going with the best offers!

That route is on promo now so itโ€™s about 50% off. You should subscribe to their newsletters to get updated https://member.airasia.com/newsletter-subscribe.aspx or http://www.detourista.com/promo/new/airasia/

Thatโ€™s what I payed for a CNX-KBV round trip flight, twice, when booking about 2 weeks before traveling. But this was in June/July, so, Iโ€™m not sure how things change in Dec/Jan.
I assume this is Air Asia (not sure if other low cost fly direct CNX-KBV), so, checked bag not included, you get 7kg carry-on, but they donโ€™t really check unless youโ€™re carrying a huge backpack.
If you have so much time, Iโ€™d say it would be much wiser to wait and check regularly for cheaper promo fares.

Thanks so much for your feedback. Yeah, itโ€™s Air Asia. Iโ€™m planning to get a flat for a month or two in Chiang Mai so Iโ€™d go to Krabi for 3-5 days with just a duffle. My concern is about going in the middle of high season; the price is great! But why lock in dates more than 4 months in advance? I should ask myself that more often thoughโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m wondering for the people who live there if you can just wander into a travel agency and get cheaper plane tickets that way; but I suppose that for Air Asia itโ€™s the same no matter who you are.

No, donโ€™t go to travel agencies. Cheapest fare is always online, and when flying to Krabi, your only choice is Air Asia (for a cheap direct flight of course).
And youโ€™re right about the timing, no need to book so far in advance for a trip like that. Thereโ€™s always the chance of paying around $100 for that same tickets, but hell, thatโ€™s not so much more, and you will have the freedom to choose when to go while being in CM already, specially if youโ€™re not sure how many months youโ€™ll be staying.

Thanks, thatโ€™s what I was wondering, if booking a few weeks out in high high season means a price difference of just a bit, or if it will be twice as much. Never been there at that time of year, nor booked last minute flights (well, Vietnam/Laos flights in November but wasnโ€™t making comparisons back then). Thanks again!

Where do you work from in Lisbon? ๐Ÿงณโ˜•

in Lisbon, Portugal by @dominiksobe | 18h 18 hours ago | 1 comment

Hi everyone,

I am going to move to Lisbon in July and I was wondering where you guys work from? Do you have any recommendations for working on a budget? Any good cafรจs or cheap coworking spaces?

I did some research and found some coworking spaces for > ~ 100โ‚ฌ p. month which is pretty reasonable but too much for me right now.

Thanks!

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 4d 3 days ago | 37 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Bali to focus on attracting remote workers when the island reopens for tourism

by @levelsio | 11d 11 days ago | 0 comments

When reopening for tourism, Bali says it will focus on attracting remote workers to choose the island as their workplace:

"We will focus on a new pattern of how Bali is not just for leisure, but indeed to work in Bali as well"

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 13d 12 days ago | 667 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Iโ€™m looking for any recommendations for services or people others have used to get answers on the best place to set up their businesses based on their personal circumstances.

Leaning towards Singapore after a ton of research, but would really like some concrete advice before jumping in.

Appreciate it!

How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov | 18d 17 days ago | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

Can you recommend any great freelancing videos?

by @nikk | 21d 21 days ago | 0 comments

Hey Community, Did you ever come across any YouTube videos that sold the freelancing gig to you? That taught you how to freelance? Where to start? The good and bad points of freelancing? or just follow any YouTubers that specialise in freelancing (for inspiration)?

I'd be interested in learning more...

Thanks in advance.

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @nrgetik | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?

What have been your biggest challenges working remotely in your team?

by @wanderer | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

My interest in DN lifestyle started when half of our company have been taking 1 month for remote work @ Ko Samui. It was truly cool but we observed quite some communication challenges. Communication seemed just โ€œriskierโ€ when online.

What were your worst situations caused by misunderstanding while communicating online with your teammates? What do you do to avoid misunderstandings?

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen | 3mo 3 months ago | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How do you guys deal with the dreaded โ€œproof of addressโ€ for banking and investing and other random stuff?

I donโ€™ have the option to have a family member do this for me, sadly (not wanting to use that country as residence for tax implications).

This has to be a pretty regular problem for most who arenโ€™t doing the old timey โ€œlive in one place and pay bills there foreverโ€ thing. Suggestions? Services? Hacks? Workarounds?
