Should I travel with a MacBook Pro 13" or 15"?

by @ileitch | 5yr  | 12 comments

Hey!

Iโ€™m wondering how many developers travel with a MBP 13" vs 15"? I currently use a late-2012 13" for iOS development, but Iโ€™m pondering the 15" because Xcode is so resource hungry. On the downside, it is rather heavyโ€ฆ

Do you travel with a 15"? Do you wish youโ€™d opted for the 13" instead?

Cheers

  • Ian

P.S Iโ€™m asking developers specifically as system spec is more crucial than, say, for a copywriter.

Iโ€™ve been quite happy with my 2015 MBP 13"

The display is experiencing staingate, although I can perhaps wipe off the AR coating as a workaroundโ€ฆ

Now, Iโ€™m thinking what to get nextโ€ฆ Quite keen to exploring the 12" MacBook for simplicity.

Why? Iโ€™m actually loving the 2018 iPad. I feel like with some software improvements (mostly to cover my critical Chrome plugins), a simpler machine would do the trick most of the time.

In 2019, I could be rocking the latest iPhone, 2018 iPad (not Pro), and the basic MacBook.

I had a similar setup with my i7 2015 MBP 13".

As my Apple Care program was going to an end in June 2018 I pay a visit to Hong Kong and bought i7 MacBook 12". It was a perfect transition to (as you say) simplicity and ultra lightweight. MBP 13" + Logitech keyboard and mouse found a new happy owner.

Iโ€™m web designer, so thereโ€™s no need for extra power and honestly, I donโ€™t see any difference in performance. I also bought Magic Keyboard 2 + Magic Trackpad 2 for stand up work.

The market offers a ton of options so itโ€™s important to customise it for your own needs.

OK, I went for the 15"!

  • 13" processing power and screen size will always bug me when doing iOS development (I hate you Xcode).
  • I can use a laptop stand (I backed the new Roost Stand on Kickstarter) with the 15" and never feel the need for an external monitor.

Canโ€™t wait to do some of my best work on it!

Iโ€™m using 13" now and planning to upgrade to 15".
The power difference is quite a lot and bigger screen is ++
Came to this thread for an answer and seems like everyone vote for 15" over 13".

I use a 13" Air. The Air comes in a 13" or 11" - and of course I wanted the extra screen real estate. Itโ€™s still amazingly light.

My computer before this was a, I believe 15" (Maybe 17"?) MBP - And that thing was probably 3x as heavy - definitely wouldnโ€™t travel with it having now switched to the air.

In the end - itโ€™s personal preference, it doesnโ€™t matter why I or anyone else says. If you need a lot of power for compilation or something - get something beefier. If you can do without - stay lighter. But in the end itโ€™s your call.

Hi,

Iโ€™m a game developer & photographer and have spent the last year travelling with a 15" late '11 MBP. Iโ€™m due an upgrade and am currently thinking Iโ€™ll stick with a 15". The power and large screen are really useful - Iโ€™m not sure my Unity games would be so easy to develop on the smaller models. While a 13" might be more portable, for me personally, I think I would regret downsizing.

Interested to hear what you end up choosing!

I currently use the 15inch retina. I know itโ€™s heavy, but I love it too much to give it up. Maybe when Apple creates a powerful macbook air I will switch, but until then I will continue to use this computer.

I use MBP 15" i7 2010 versionโ€ฆ so itโ€™s heavier than new MBPsโ€ฆ and I still donโ€™t care that muchโ€ฆ it works greatโ€ฆ so next one will be much lighter and I think 99% sure 15", not 13"โ€ฆ that way I donโ€™t need external monitors, power is here (didnโ€™t even know there is no i7 13" MBPs ?!)
The only thing Iโ€™m waiting for is for them to make fanless versionโ€ฆ not sure if itโ€™s even possible with these processors and if new fanless processors will have comparable speedโ€ฆ someone knows what is the plan here?

Technically possible, but not with current laptop processors. Think cellphones and tablets. You get some power, but even this little bit of power means overheating while charging etc., and itโ€™s usually a fraction of the speed of a โ€œproper computerโ€.

Future looks very bright though, technology is improving really fast and there are some really interesting advances towards fast computers that produce very little heat, but donโ€™t hold your breath.

The 15" is heavy, the casing scratches the screen after a while. The discrete GPU makes no difference for development or basic graphics.

That said it is a rock solid machine and I can work on it for months without an external display or keyboard.

Are you travelling with checked in baggage? If not I would go for the smaller machine.

Hi Ian,
I have a 15" Retina, but my next one would be an air for sure. I donโ€™t use Xcode, just the terminal and chrome. I appreciate my i7 but, prefer less weight.
I think the screen is small anyway, and always try to find a monitor at coworking spaces.

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 6h 6 hours ago | 670 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Best Place in South East Asia to stay for 6 months+ (Tax purposes)

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager | 19h 18 hours ago | 0 comments

We're looking for a country in south east asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 4d 3 days ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

I did some research and found some coworking spaces for > ~ 100โ‚ฌ p. month which is pretty reasonable but too much for me right now.

Thanks!

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 10d 9 days ago | 37 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Bali to focus on attracting remote workers when the island reopens for tourism

How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov | 23d 23 days ago | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @nrgetik | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?
