Taipei or Kaohsiung for May?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @autumnflame | 3yr  | 5 comments

My partner and I are looking at staying in Taiwan for the month of May, and were wondering if Taipei or Kaohsiung is better for living and working in? Our primary purpose will be working, so cheap food/accommodation (thatโ€™s relatively easy for a foreigner to find and obtain) and fast internet are our biggest priorities, but some sightseeing and nightlife would be nice. (I know Taipei has the latter, not as sure about Kaohsiung.) Thanks!

Theyโ€™re pretty similar, but Kaohsiung has better weather, will be cheaper and have a better scene since itโ€™s a little smaller and easier to meet people. People are more friendly also - Taipeiโ€™s a big city, a little self-absorbed, everything is too spread out so you never feel like going anywhere. If you go to KH, spend a few days checking out Tainan for the history.

Great question my BF and I are also looking into these 2 cities in May, as well, and leaning more towards Kaohsiung as it appears Taipei has more rain in May (but Kaohsiung is hotter, which we donโ€™t mind). We have similar priorities/plans as it sounds like you do. Nomadlist does not list Kaohsuing as having very fast internet, but I wonder how accurate that information is.

From the few accounts Iโ€™ve heard, they were able to get fast internet. Maybe it just depends on being able to find the right place? I think weโ€™re leaning toward splitting out time between the two cities, not quite sure yet.

I just stayed in Taipei for a month and visited Kaoshiung for four days. It seemed to me that many restaurants close very early in Kaohsiung and it was harder to get around because there are only two metro lines. They have a bikesharing system like Taipei, but it doesnโ€™t work with the payment card for Taipei, so I didnโ€™t use it. So overall it didnโ€™t feel as โ€œeasyโ€ as Taipei.

Regarding the internet speed; I guess it depends on what you define as โ€œfastโ€. The wifi in the hotel I was staying in was worse than 4G on my phone. But I had the same in Taipei in a few places as well. And 4G was good enough for video calls, which is the most demanding use I had for my internet connection. If you need high bandwidth to transfer large files, this might not work for you.

Personally, I would probably get bored staying a whole month in Kaohsiung. If you havenโ€™t been to either, Iโ€™d say go to Taipei and do a weekend trip to Kaohsiung. Itโ€™s super fast to get there by bullet train.

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 2d 1 day ago | 39 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 2d 2 days ago | 670 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Best Place in South East Asia to stay for 6 months+ (Tax purposes)

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager | 3d 2 days ago | 0 comments

We're looking for a country in south east asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 6d 5 days ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Where do you work from in Lisbon? ๐Ÿงณโ˜•

in Lisbon, Portugal by @dominiksobe | 9d 8 days ago | 1 comment

Hi everyone,

I am going to move to Lisbon in July and I was wondering where you guys work from? Do you have any recommendations for working on a budget? Any good cafรจs or cheap coworking spaces?

I did some research and found some coworking spaces for > ~ 100โ‚ฌ p. month which is pretty reasonable but too much for me right now.

Thanks!

What is the best way to approach Taiwan?

in Taiwan by @zoxel | 5mo 4 months ago | 4 comments

We have never been in Taiwan (a couple of travelers) and I am just wondering is possible to find there some quite clean place to hang for a while? How it is better to start? Are there any websiteโ€™s for short and long term rentals? It looks like AirBnB is not that popular there. So it seems that usual tactics - rent hotel or airbnb for short term and then look for long term just driving around might not work. It looks like everything there in Chinese - so if there are any tips how to overcome this - that is more then welcome  Overall just interested in any suggestion - where best to go first? Also is it hard to extend your stay there - we are digital nomads - so working for some company overseas and probably will be extending as a tourist (If we like there).
Sorry for so many questions - but this is really some terra incognita for me

Where to stay for a month in Taipei?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @gnefkow | 2yr 2 years ago | 7 comments

Hello,

My girlfriend and I will be heading to Taipei for a month in February, and weโ€™re trying to figure out where to live. Any advice onโ€ฆ

  • How to find a place? Are there any websites where we could find a place for a month?
  • Area of town - which district should we try to stay in?

Weโ€™re on a budget, looking for something that would be around $400usd per month if possible.

Iโ€™ll arrive in Taipei in april and need a place for at least couple of months but Iโ€™m not eager to rent something from seeing the online listing alone.
