Hi, we are trying to find a house to rent for 2-3 persons near Las Palmas for 4-5 months at the moment and it seems to be almost impossible except through Airbnb which is super expensive. Any advises or local contacts?

We rented an Air BnB for a month..and then asked the landlord to stay and worked out a much more reasonable rate.
Hi,
so I’ve heard many great things about the Canary Islands but only from people who are not digital nomads. I’ve been on Tenerife in February 2011 and 2012, but only as a tourist (and with a student budget living at a friends house, so very different experience) and I saw a lot of old people. People say the same about Gran Canaria, especially in the winter, since a lot of the German and British retirees overwinter there.
Everything I read about especially the biggest city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is more or less about the city, the food, the beaches, the weather, the nature and so on but less about the people. I know I’d have to learn Spanish to speak to the locals (and I want to). I want to go somewhere at beginning of next year and LPA is on the top of my list. After my Tenerife experience and everything I read I’m sure I will like the location itself but it’s never fun if you’re somewhere alone for too long. Maybe the people who live(d) there can share their experiences about the digital nomad scene, or more specifically: How about the international crowd, are there a lot of people from say … mid 20s to mid 30s that are meeting up regularly for leisure (not work/tech related meetups)?
Can anyone suggest a place to go in the Canaries that is quiet with a beach to surf on. I’m not too keen on large cities, nor large developed coastal areas for second-home retirees.
Suggestions appreciated.
Agaete in Gran Canaria - though you’d have to hop on the bus and go to Moya for the surfing, and maybe Sardinia, which is even closer. (Actually I don’t know much about the surfing other than what I hear other people say - but it does seem like every other person on Gran Canaria surfs…) Agaete is a beautiful little town at the foot of a soaring cliff, with some of the most wonderful hiking, if you’re into that.
I suspect you’re looking for a quiet place with a good surfing beach rather than a place with surfing nearby, so someone else may have a better suggestion. (I’m quite keen on moving from Las Palmas to Agaete, which is why it comes to mind.)
We’ve had a wonderful 1.5 months in Las Palmas! We’ve met many Canarians who speak fluent English, especially in the tech industry. We’ve met a number of “partial nomads” who have their base here most of the year but travel for 3-5 months.
There are lots of cool local companies based here so it’s easy to meet tech people if that’s your thing. There are interesting things going on all the time organized by locals, expats and nomads. Aside from tech and nomad meetups, I’ve enjoyed going to language exchanges and meeting people that way. We hope to come back and stay close to Las Canteras beach again!
I met a nomad last year who is awesome and has made Las Palmas his base for a few years. He really likes it and has said good things about the community. As @ani says, there are lots of coworking spaces and meetup groups there. Keep in mind it’s one is one of Spain’s largest cities, not just some small island town! I expect there are many local people who speak great English as you’ll find across the country. My husband and I (30s) are very likely to head there in November.
Thanks for sharing your experiences
@ani I just said 20s-30s because that’s my age group and we tend to have similar backgrounds and interests but I don’t really care about the age. You’re right, it’s about not becoming old while still young, or at any age for that matter
In some nomad “hot spots” like Chiang Mai or Berlin I’m sure it’s possible to find lots of likeminded people, I just wasn’t so sure about LPA.
@lognaturel, 400k inhabitants is indeed a bigger city but doesn’t really say much about the (international) communities e.g. in coworking spaces/meetups and what they’re up to. E.g. I’ve found that in Berlin nearly all (tech-) meetups are in English whereas in other German cities like Hamburg they are in German. I also don’t have a problem just hangig out with locals though, but I’ve heard from many many places (podcasts, blogs, my own experiences on mainland Spain) that if you want to stay there a little longer you should/have to learn spanish because a lot of the locals speak only little English, apart from the touristic places, where you could get by with English or even German
I’m back in Las Palmas for the second time (I was first here from November 2015 to April 2016) and I can say that Las Palmas is very different to the south of the island, where pensioners really do seem to predominate. Las Palmas, on the other hand, tends to be very youthful (note that I understand ‘youthful’ to mean ‘not retired’, and I include myself (50 y.o.) in this youthful group - some people do allow themselves to become old while still young, but this isn’t very common among nomads…). Not only is Las Palmas youthful, it’s the most sociable place I’ve lived so far. Yesterday evening I was at a language exchange - a very sociable gathering but also with a purpose, obviously. My co-working office organises social events. There are loads of social events organised through Las Palmas’s active network of meetup groups. There are also lots of social activities publicised on Facebook. If you like hiking, there are senderismo groups you might want to join/follow, and there are plenty of other Facebook pages with information about other types of events. I’m unaware of events strictly for the young, though - I find Las Palmas refreshingly non-ageist!
Toying with the idea of renting a house with other nomads in Las Palmas between Oct 15th - Dec 18th. If you’re interested, please PM me with your email address, budget and dates.
How did you all get on in Las Palmas? Thinking about heading there in Jan to work/surf/improve my Spanish. How was the community? Weather at that time of year? General thoughts on it? Anything is appreciated! Thanks x
Just a late update on this, the coliving thing didn’t work out but I’ve created a fb group for people in Las Palmas to get together: https://www.facebook.com/groups/982918835102623/
Ah damn this was last year! I’m thinking about going this year!
Did you go, how was it for winter?
Thanks
It’s worth checking out, although it’s not at the top of my list. The worst thing about it is it’s hard to find reasonable short-term housing. I did enjoy my two months there though, I’d get a hotel for a week and see what you think before committing. Shout out to my boys at Coworking C!
Ok muchachas y muchachos, if you’re interested in renting together in Las Palmas (and have not messaged me directly about it), make sure to send me a private message in the next 24 hours with 1) dates between October 15 - December 15 for which you are interested, 2) Your $budget$, and 3) include your email address, thanks.
OK right on Nico, I’m hoping to surf as well although I don’t know dick about it.
You should be able to just click my picture here and there’s a “MESSAGE” button, or you can find me on #nomads with the same handle.
I was planning to come with my friend (also Nomad / working remote) to Las Palmas in Nov.
Mainly to work/surf.
A surfcamp with accomodation and fast internet would be 300€/week so that would also be my rough budget.
Plus renting a car and surf equipment…
How can I send you a PM here? I`m new to the forum… I use the slack chat more…
Sounds great Anne, hope to see you around then, feel free to shoot me a PM after you arrive. Looks like there will be a few of us around.
Good news. I’ll get in touch then.
I might visit there during similar dates. Have you been there before? What would be a reasonable budget for this location? $2000/month?
Spain yes, Las Palmas no. So there’s a lot of variance in price, but US$1750 to 3000/mo would probably be average for a 3 bedroom place. I can research more once I get emails and budget ranges from everyone.
I’ve already arranged my accommodation, but I’ll be in Las Palmas from 28 November until the end of March, so would be interested in meet-ups.
Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.
Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??
Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.
Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.
Thanks a million. Much love.

Hi! I want to relocate to Spain and I was wondering if someone can recommend a SIM card with a good data package.
Thanks
Hi, Gaby! I use Simyo all across EU actually, it's one of the best deals in Europe :) For more information, please see this wiki prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Spain -- it's the best resource on prepaid data sims anywhere in the world. The only catch is if you're a resident you can get much better deals using contract subscription.
yes, it's available on ebay (i.e www.ebay.com/itm/Tarjeta-SIM-Micro-Nano-de-Prepago-SIMYO-10-DE-SALDO-INCLU-DOS/392575928376?hash=item5b67594838:g:jNIAAOSwzkRd0t-z) but you'll need to contact them afterwards on whatsapp / DMs to activate it for you as passport data is required.
Hi ! thanks a lot for your advice , looking at the fandom page . Do you know if you can order the sim cards online ?

Food is cheap and everywhere, easy to go out and have fun/meet for business. Rent has crept up but still far better value than where I came from. Internet: 36 EUR/month get me 450/40 mbps (cable -> DOCSIS 3.0) Public transport is 2.70 EUR/ticket. No woman I know has said they felt unsafe. Some really odd, xenophobic sounding comments on here. Biggest downsides IMO: service quality at restaurants - not that people are rude, but they don't seem to particular

There's lots of cool aspects to the city but I hated it when I was there. The city has a problem with British stag parties, so if you look like you're a British male and speak English expect to be treated with disdain (it's fair enough) The Hungarians can just generally be unfriendly, especially bartenders. It's a weird experience waiting to be served while 3 people ignore you. Or buying the same drink and getting charged whatever they want (700-1500

Londoners are quite internationally and ethnically diverse, and seemingly better educated and more intellectual than New Yorkers in aggregate. The city very clean with a stunning mix of modern and historic architecture, and arguably has Europe's best public transit in terms of signage, availability, cleanliness and general efficiency. Meanw

It is still great and you can find really cheap apartments (300-400$) and restaurants (2-3$ for a main). Wouldn't recommend staying there during the burning season. The best area is Nimman, but it's also the most expensive. You can stay in the old city that's very nice but that gets noisy during the weekend for the night markets. Last but not least, very safe city. All in all would go back in a heartbeat.

Just remember this, people working at supermarkets make 2 usd/per hour. If you want to live like a local, then you can save a lot of money. If you don't mind a 5-10 minute walk from the BTS, then you can easily get a one bedroom apartment for 300 USD per month, in a high class condo, plus with free golf cart ser

After having traveled the previous 4 months in India, Cambodia, VietNam, Myanmar and Thailand, Singapore was so easy! The subway system is a marvel, streets signs were easy to read, everyone speaks English (that just makes it easy for me as an English speaker) it is safe, clean, and parks are gorgeous. I was there as COVID 19 was breaking out fairly fast and that put a damper on my time but I was so happy to be there anyway and plan to go back. For digital

It's a bit of an older vibe than Canggu, and there's certainly a big chunk of yogi's kicking around — but I liked it much better than Canggu and found it less pretentious. Plus, you can drive down there in 45mins whenever you want some beach or party vibes. As others mentioned, there's some great coworking spaces, cheap warungs, some really nice spots to stay cheaply if you go just outside of the mad tourist
