The town has been taken over by tourists. Local music venues that have been around for 50+ years are closing because they can't afford the rent hikes. Tourism + out of town developers are driving prices for locals up and the job market can't keep up (minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour.) It would be possible to increase minimum wage, protect small business, and local cost of living if the state wasn't controlled by conservative republicans who won't pass any useful legislation to aid with the ec

You used to have enough cafés and restaurants and stays were mainly affordable villas. Coming back in 2023 I have to say this place is unrecognizable. Only now I realize how much damage influencers did to Canggu, telling everyone to come here and invest and overdevelop with little to no regard to the local culture. If you want American comforts like Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club and live abroad, this is a good spot. You can also shop from both Amazon US and MX; there are many US/Canadian people here. It's a very comfortable place to be in many ways. For many people, it's a great first digital nomad spot as many things are catered to tourists, making it easier for nomads.
