As a local, born and bred Joburger, I can tell you that there is a lot to love about this city if you know where to look. For the most part, it's orientated around suburbian living. The main city (Johannesburg CBD) is for the most part a no-go because of crime, but if you know some locals you should definitely check it out there are amazing restaurants, theatres and museums to experience there. Having lived here for 30+ years, I'd recommend checking out Sandton CBD, restaurants in Linden, Wand

Been there for an educational event. The architecture is great and there's a lot of history for those interested in exploring it. The city can be crowded with tourists though (I was there in July.) It's a great place for walking around in and doing a punting tour to learn about the colleges. Commerce tends to close very early, as well as the bars and clubs. I was not a big fan of the food and every place seemed overpriced.

Pros: very safe, pretty affordable, very pretty, hospitable people, great coffee. Cons: a bit dull, culture is very insular (respectful but quite conservative), food is bad, police state vibes are kind of weird. A certain kind of person who doesn't care about nightlife at all, is open to experiencing a foreign culture that's more inward-oriented, and wants to live a really chill lifestyle in a green, pleasant city would really like it. I have been coming here since 10 years now as a digital nomad. I am here a few times a year. I have been in 20 countries in Africa and would say it is the most friendly one. Kampala is definitely a lot of fun and has good restaurants and the rest of Uganda is beautiful too. I host several times a year coworking and co-living experiences for digital nomads in Uganda. You are more than welcome to join us.

All of that you get for almost US-level prices. Nah, I didn’t have a good time. It feels utterly derelict and careless. Zero things to do except paying through your nose for Safari stuff. Amazing weather, nature, food, people, music, nightlife, beach, hiking, and so affordable! Overall 11/10 rating :) agreed with other review regarding cheap uber - it's amazing!

Nightlife is amazing, especially if you’re a woman. Free unlimited drinks for ladies, open bar, no catch, in two clubs in Media One Tower on Thursday. There is no place in the world that offers this. My female friends love Dubai because of these types of deals lol. The easiest way to waste money here is by buying drinks.
