Looking for recommendations on accommodation for a 2-3month stay in Perth Australia any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
Like so many things in life - it depends. It depends what you’re looking for.
Perth as a city cowers an enormous area due all the new suburbs they keep building. You don’t want to end up in any of those! Some of the older suburbs nearer the CBD (the only place with skyscrapers) are nice in terms of culture, food, and drink. I’d put Mt Lawley on top of that list.
Nearby is Northbridge, which you probably want to avoid. Unless you come for the bindge-drinking teenagers and pill-heads going clubbing. They’ve got great cheap Asian food there though!
If you’re in Australia you probably want the beach. And luckily Perth has some of the better beaches. But the beach is a good 20 minute drive from the city. The nicest ones near the city are Cottesloe, City Beach, and Floreat. At Cotteslough you might be able to find some accommodation, but it depends what time of the year you are going. It’s probably pretty dead in winter there.
About Perth: It’s huge and people drive everywhere. There are buses, but they aren’t worth much. The metro/train is great though, if you are lucky enough to need to go somewhere along it’s north-south line. Cottesloe being one of those places.
And finally - Fremantle, the best of all of the above. A port-town swallowed by Perth’s expanding, but has kept it’s own vibe. More of a hippie vibe if you look in the right places, plus good beaches, nature reserves, old houses, the river, bars and restaurants.
– wow, just realised I went on a bit of a rant there, possibly without even properly answering your question. For 2-3 months I’d have a look at http://www.gumtree.com.au/ or https://www.couchsurfing.com/places/Oceania/Australia/Perth.
Hey there!
I’m planning on spending 3 months in Australia next year on a tourist visa. I’ve already gotten my working holiday visa (in 2017), but unfortunately didn’t get to take advantage of the full year (only stayed 3 months).
My boyfriend will be able to get his working holiday visa before we go, so I’m wondering if anyone knows of a way that I might be able to extend my stay (6 months would be ideal, if longer I wouldn’t complain).
I’d like to do this legally of course, so I’m wondering about a student visa. Anyone have experience getting this to extend their stay?
And other workarounds that might be worth exploring?
Might also be worth noting – I’ll be working while I’m there (for a US-based company) and I am American.
Appreciate the help!

marriage is not an easy option unless AU$30K is in the budget…
my wife can’t just “Get in” - we live somewhere else as a result…
I dont think you have an option unfortunately. besides continually doing tourist visa runs but I’m not sure how easy that is. australia is a fairly tough country when it comes to immigration, particularly visa overstays and making sure you’re not working.
Easiest option, marriage.
On New Year’s Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.
I haven’t had any entry issues to any of the several countries I’ve visited after, but now I’m applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry won’t keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as I’ve never traveled there before, don’t know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?
Many thanks in advance!
The Australian government apparently has bilateral agreements with a number of signatories to the Schengen Visa treaty that predate, and supersede, the standard 90/180 for traveling in the Schengen zone.
This Wikipedia article stipulates to the bilateral visa agreements:
According to this article, and some of the links I’ve followed to official documents, Australians are (potentially) permitted to travel within Schengen, and not have their stay in the following countries aggregate up to the 90/180, but be treated as separate periods, with the time permitted under the existing bilateral agreements.
Countries that appear to have bilateral agreements include:
In theory, this would permit an Australian passport holder to move relatively unrestricted around the Schengen zone for an almost infinite period.
For example, if I am permitted to be in Germany for 90/180, external to the Schengen treaty, I could, in theory, spend 90 days here, exit to Austria on the train, spend another 90/180, exit to The Netherlands by train, spend another 90/180, and then return to Germany, where my 180 days would have reset.
If you’re an Aussie, and have been traveling in Europe without any formal visa documentation, other than your passport, I’d love to hear from you. I’m attempting to plan out the balance of my time in Europe, and don’t want to fall foul with any officials. Getting a black mark on my passport would be highly undesirable.
Thanks in advance for your support
Second Update confirming multiple countries.
While I haven’t validated all of this information myself, I trust the source. I am now going the route of confirming independently with each consulate.
Final Update: Links to the original bilateral Australian visa treaty agreements (yes, all of them)
UPDATE:
Yes to Denmark/Sweden/Norway. Australian’s can stay in Nordic countries for up to 90 days in 180 days in addition to their stay in the Schengen zone. Link to Norwegian Embassy website in Canberra containing this verification. Link to Danish government website that confirms the Norwegian information here.
I’m going to Australia for the first time in a week or so. I’d like to visit places like Byron (from Sydney). But I’d prefer not to rent a car.
I know Google Maps supports public transit directions in Aus, but based on my experience in London, they’re often not as useable / accurate as the native planning tools (e.g. National Rail app in the UK).
Can anyone recommend any local apps / sites for planning routes on trains, buses, etc. in Aus?
Hey dunctk, I’m not sure what your budget is like but I recently flew to brisbane and hired a car and drove to noosa and then down to byron for 5 days and the total bill was only around $100AUD plus petrol (maybe another 60-100 depending on the car) but only 30-40 a day and that lets you go anywhere. Having said that you can always hire a bike as well for around $10 a day. I personally preferred having a car as there were many places we wanted to stop off at which would be difficult on public transport

Uluwatu is an amazing place, in my opinion way better than Canggu and even Ubud. Why? There’s not much traffic, beaches are amazing, there’s a significant Brazilian/Portuguese community around which reflects in ethnic restaurants pretty good and affordable. Surf culture is present, so the laid back lifestyle. Maybe it’s hard to find an actual “home”, I always prefer to stay in cheap guesthouses such as 3D Homestay, with a nice swimming pool. Enjoy the morning in the beach and catch the

It's a lot more expensive now (2020) than posted. 1-bdr in center is $3,500-$4,000 + $200-$300 for parking + $100-$200 for utilities. Almost impossible to find month-to-month rent, so this is for 1-year lease. Coffee for two + a pastry is easily $20. Dinner for two never less than $50, unless it's fast food (+20% tips are expected) and if you want actually something good it's at least $100 for two. Airbnb is $1

For visiting tourists, the best neighborhood to stay in is NOT Bushwick. Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Ft. Green or Brooklyn Heights is preferable. Plenty of good transportation in those areas - subway, buses or Uber. Easy access to beaches in Long Island and New Jersey. There's plenty to do in NYC. Great restaurants, Broadway plays (!), and in the summer you frequently can catch a free concert.
