What are good alternatives to Google Voice?

by @bengoa 9yr  | 3 comments

Hi,

I change SIM cards constantly and trend to lose them, is there a service that would give me a phone number with a phone number I can use for receiving SMS. I have seen Skype Number and Nomad SMS (too expensive, Iโ€™m looking for <20โ‚ฌ/year) and Fongo (only allows receiving SMS from US and Canada).

I would rather have an European phone number, but other country is OK too.

I donโ€™t care if they email the SMS, forward it or they have their own app.

Twilio works well, but personally I prefer Plivo (a little cheaper, and with better coverage of countries โ€“ at least the countries I need). You would need to code a simple app to do whatever you want to achieve however.

Have you tried using Twilio? You can get multiple phone numbers and forward all incoming sms and calls to your cell phone. Itโ€™s very cheap and works very well. Using a compatible app (OpenVBX for example), you can also make calls and send sms using your Twilio number.

I tried to use it yesterday, using Twilio+Zapier+Pushbullet, but didnโ€™t seem to receive the SMS I sent yesterday, Iโ€™ll try again today. Just wondering if there was something already done and not something you need to assemble yourself

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

What alternatives are there for bad WiFi in Latin America?

by @ryanleonard1989 7yr 7 years ago  | 10 comments

Hey gang, Iโ€™ve traveled pretty extensively through Central America and was recently in Colombia.

I love Latin America and want to continue to travel/work here, but internet connectivity is a constant issue. Hostel wifi is always hit or miss and when it does work, itโ€™s often slow or thereโ€™s no convenient place to work.

Cafes are even worse most of the time.

Iโ€™ve tried local sim cards with data and sometimes that works well, but skype calls eat the data right up and in many locations, the speeds are slow.

Iโ€™m willing to pay more for more reliable internet, but I havenโ€™t found anythingโ€ฆ

Wondering what most of you fine folks do and if anyone has any suggestions.

Also, what are some alternatives to hostels?

I know you can use AirBnB, but the locals jack the prices up on there (if youโ€™re in an area you can find anything on AirBnB). Apartment rentals can be found pretty inexpensively, but I like to stay moving and usually donโ€™t want to stay somewhere for even a month.

On top of all this, I like to surf and the coastal towns tend to be the worst for wifi.

Iโ€™m a little frustrated and wondering if anyone has any suggestions I havenโ€™t thought of?

Anyone have Google Project Fi yet?

by @andrewkent 7yr 7 years ago  | 20 comments

I signed up for an invite for Google Project Fi and was wondering if anyone here got one yet? Sounds like a nomadโ€™s mobile dream. In case youโ€™re not familiar, here are some of the features:

  • Unlimited talk/text for $20/month
  • No contract
  • $10/month per GB of data
  • Calls over Wifi; seamless switching to cell networks
  • Data that isnโ€™t used is credited back to you the following month
  • Mobile Hotspot included (uses your same data as above)
  • Works in 120 countries
  • texting is included internationally
  • many international calls over wifi are either free or very cheap;
  • data is the same price no matter where you are

I guess it works on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks and your phone will automatically select the best signal/speed, but only if a wifi network is not available.

You have to use a Nexus 6 for now, but Iโ€™m sure at some point, all Android devices will be eligible.

If it actually works, even halfway decently, this really sounds like a game changer for international nomads.

Anyone out there have any experience with it yet?

How do I link WhatsApp and LINE to my Google Voice number?

Iโ€™d like one number that folks on WhatsApp and LINE can use. How do I do this with Google Voice? Would it work better if I switch to a Skype number?

What's better for remote work? Google Apps or Office 365?

by @meanderingwoods 9yr 9 years ago  | 7 comments

Right now Iโ€™m on a Google Apps for Business account for my organization. Itโ€™s the free one from several years ago thatโ€™s grandfathered into free, but has some account restrictions. Iโ€™m about at the point of outgrowing it and am considering either full Google for Work or Office365. Iโ€™ve been over pros and cons and both seem very good at a similar price. So Iโ€™m wondering what experience others have had. Specifically around:

  • Storage and backup, with versioning.
  • Granular file access control and logging.
  • Migration pathway. (Anyone who does IT with experience migrating from G to MS contact me offlist for a potential project.)
  • Considerations for storing client-sensitive information there at some point.
  • Other differentiators or considerations commonly missed.
  • Other services to consider that are similar (email, storage, document collaboration, security, reliability, near-zero IT support requirement)

I'm Fred Perrotta, co-founder of Tortuga Backpacks and ex-Googler. AMA

by @fredperrotta 9yr 9 years ago  | 13 comments

Hi Nomads,

Iโ€™m Fred Perrotta, the co-founder of Tortuga Backpacks. We make carry on luggage for urban travelers.

In 2009, my co-founder, Jeremy, and I took a two-week trip to Eastern Europe. Despite a ton of pre-trip research, we couldnโ€™t find backpacks that worked well for city travel. My hiking bag was a nightmare to pack and unpack. Having recently read the 4-Hour Workweek (and being naive), we decided that we could solve this problem.

A year later, I left my full-time job at Google to work on Tortuga. At the time, I paid the bills doing freelance work for startups.

Iโ€™m a medium-term traveler (a month here, two weeks there), rather than a full-time nomad, but Tortuga Backpacks has enabled others to take on the digital nomad lifestyle.

Ask me about making products for travelers, making physical (gasp!) products, online marketing, sourcing in China, the Canton Fair, trying to build a remote team, why I have $6,473 in Airbnb credits, or anything else.

And because I was asked in the Slack chat, you can use discount code LEVELS for 15% off any of our backpacks through the end of the year. Our flagship bag, the Tortuga, is a maximum-sized carry on. For the light packers of the DN community, the Tortuga Air (ships in January) may be a better fit.
