What can you recommend for Pacific island hopping?

by @srg_b 8yr  | 5 comments

Hi folks

Iโ€™ll be spending 3 months in New Zealand starting from December. During that time, and after that trip, Iโ€™d like to take the opportunity to visit islands like Tuvalu, Vanuatu, American Samoa, Cook Islands, well, you know how it goes, Iโ€™d like to visit all of them. Since Iโ€™ll probably be in a position to visit 3 or 4, what would you recommend? Iโ€™m really excited by coral beaches, lagoons, and small islands. Iโ€™m not dirty rich, but not a budget traveller either - staying at Bora Bora resort not an option nor looking for something like that. Has anyone done something similar? Kiwis?

Thanks
Serge

Iโ€™m a Kiwi and I visited Samoa in 2011. I stayed at the Taufua Beach Fales, Lalomanu Beach (Aleipata). It was a few months after the big tsunami had come through, but the place was fully functional, although they had some sad stories, of course.

It was a holiday holiday, so I didnโ€™t take a laptop. If I had, I think I would have been frustrated by the infrastructure. Most of the people seemed very poor and most of the money seems to go into building churches. It didnโ€™t seem like a place that was catering to digital nomads.

But if youโ€™re just looking for a place to chill, Iโ€™d definitely recommend it. The interior is really lush, the people and visitors are friendly and it has a very different pace of life to New Zealand. It seemed a little edgy in town in the evenings, so Iโ€™d keep your wits about you there. I didnโ€™t run into trouble, but I didnโ€™t go looking for any. Also, the waves breaking on the reef are really loud, so take some earplugs to really make the most of your beachfront fale

I havenโ€™t been to any other Pacific Islands yet, maybe one day. I have avoided Fiji on principle, due to the militaryโ€™s involvement over the years.

The rates at Taufua (in June 2011) were:

  • The rate for one person to be in a fale is 120SAT per night with breakfast and dinner.
  • If you stay one week, you get a 10% discount.
  • If you can share with another person, the rate drops to 90SAT
  • If you can share with 2 people, the rate drop to 70SAT per night.

In 2017, 120 SAT (WST) = 65.1227 NZD. So yeah, not very cheap, but cheap enough for someone that was working full time for the man at the time.

Itโ€™s a long way from the airport, so when you book your transfer, remember to take into account the time difference

Consider Indonesia or the Philippines. Both have lots of islands & reefs. Prices are relatively low & Internet service is good in at least some places. Hereโ€™s one area worth a thought:
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Bohol

Depending on a lot of things you might also consider booking a round-the-world or round-the-Pacific flight. Those arenโ€™t cheap but may not be hugely different than cost for a round trip to NZ plus flights to various Pacific islands. That might ley you get to more places and/or to some that are otherwise expensive to reach like Easter Island.

Philippines and Indonesia are both awful to get to from NZ. Flights to Pacific Islands are cheap and easy from NZ. Also, culturally islander culture is unique and very different.

Hey - we spent a few months in Fiji (my husband is originally from Fiji, left when he was 10). Itโ€™s a beautiful place. Go to Savusavu where theres lots of yoga retreats and so on starting to happen.

Price wise - there are lots of hostels and homestays, but you donโ€™t get as nice a place as you would in SEA. Resorts and hotels can be found cheaply also (way cheaper than Aus/NZ anyway).

Local food in the markets is dirt cheap, fresh produce, etc. Anything that has to be imported is expensive.
Data is good - Vodafone put up towers all over the islands so no issue with coverage and its nto dirt cheap but its ok priced.

Local wages are very cheap ($100 AUD a week). You can definitely hire someone to take you diving, snorkelling etc and the beauty and possibilitie are just incredible.

The problem with Fiji and a lot of similar islands is that its basically either resorts or local accom (more or less slum) so thereโ€™s not the budget but nice accom you can get in SEA which is very digital nomad friendly. Renting a place on airbnb for a couple months is possible but you get nowhere near the bang for your buck you do somewhere like Bali. Have a look on airbnb I guess. If yuo just want a few nights, then thereโ€™s hostels and cheaper hotels.

Fijian people are super nice and (something I find extremely refreshing as cmopared to Bali, where I spend most of my time) nobody will try to hustle you.

Hmm, the South Pacific tends to be priced at the bare minimum the pricing Australia/NZ has, and if itโ€™s not, it tends to be much higher.

But not to worry, there is absolutely many alternatives.

If you want beautiful lagoons that are uncrowded and out of this world, head to Vanuatu (Iโ€™ve heard samoa is good for this too) - Vanuatu will keep you awe-inspired and adventure seeking for a solid few weeks at least, as there are 3 main islands (Efate, Esperitu Santo and Tanna)

On Efate youโ€™ve got the incredible Mele Cascade falls, Iโ€™d do a helicopter ride there as well as itโ€™s just dam magical, visit the blue lagoon too. As for snorkelling on Efate, youโ€™ve got Hideaway Island which is OK, not that great. But Itโ€™s a definitely spectacular Island Efate. Also wrap your trip up with a round island day trip (hire a local, Itโ€™s like $100 of the whole day for up to whoever can fit in their car).

Esperitu Santo, youโ€™ve got the blue hole, champagne beach, and many more stunning spots.

Tanna Island youโ€™ve got this volcano that just dominates the whole island, creates the mood of the island - there is also magical caves there.

โ€“ Vanuatu truly is right now a more so untouched gem, It has only a small amount of tourism per year.

The magic of the paradise of Vanuatu is that it doesnโ€™t have that busy feel many Asian islands have.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Pacific islands with decent internet speed to work online

by @paxai 5yr 5 years ago  | 1 comment

Any digital nomads that have lived for an extended period of time on a pacific island? I am planning on moving with my girlfriend for a 6 month period to a pacific island, and planning to live of copywriting and some other online work.

Have been looking at islands like Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands ++. Main problem is that many places seem to have expensive/bad internet speeds and access.

I dontยดt need superfast internet, but it has to be good enough for me to surf, send e-mails, download pictures, update webpages and so on. Either good internet cafes or the possibility to rent appartments with internet that doesnt suck or blow our budget.

Any recommendations for the perfect pacific island for working online?
