What do you use to keep track of your personal finances that supports Bitcoin?

by @martinrvillalba 9yr  | 5 comments

Evening,

Iโ€™m looking for a piece of software to keep track of my personal (and possibly business) finances. Nothing Iโ€™ve found so far seems to quite fit the bill, though.

My essential requirements are:

  • Proper multiple currency support (that nomading thing, you know)
  • Supports for Bitcoin.
  • Can keep track of investments and other assets.
  • Preferably a desktop application, not a cloud app.
  • Runs on Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

What do you use to keep track of your personal finances, if anything?

Cheers

In case anyone else has similar requirements and stumbles upon this thread, I ended up buying a MoneyDance license for 40 USD (non-recurring, but Iโ€™d expect a 20-25 USD/ye upgrade).

Works pretty well for mostly everything Iโ€™ve needed to do, even mobile sync (Android app syncs via DropBox with the cross-platform desktop client). Itโ€™s also pretty configurable for some odd things and multi-currency support seems to work really well (so far, at least), including when dealing with BTC and its less popular cousins.

There are some idiosyncrasies to deal with and some UI glitches (itโ€™s a Java app), but nothing major.

@flyonthewall: Iโ€™m ok with some online access, Iโ€™d just prefer to have the database itself offline. Or at least accessible without an Internet connection (local browser storage would be ok).

Iโ€™ll keep Toshl in mind. It looks promising, save for the 20 USD recurring bill. Iโ€™m testing MoneyDance right now.

toshl mentioned in another thread does support bitcoin as a currency. It is a cloud app but you should perhaps keep in mind that exchange rates need to be kept updated so some kind of connectivity will be required.

Yeah, I did have a look through the forum already. Nothing seems to quite fit the bill though. Specially in regards to bitcoin and it being and Linux desktop application.

there are several threads on this topic. it might make sense to look through them. bitcoin will likely be a deal breaker for most.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Where to easily open a personal/business account in SE Asia?

by @jakub 7yr 7 years ago  | 0 comments

Hey guysโ€ฆ Iโ€™m from a EU country but in the past 6 years I spent there just 3 weeks.

I have a bank account in Australia, since I spent there over 4 years. Now Iโ€™m mostly in Thailand or travelling around.

Because of my experiences

a) PayPal froze my account for several weeks until I was able to give them documents that are very difficult to get if Iโ€™m no longer in Australia

b) when applying for a tourist visa to Australia just to pick up rest of my stuff - itโ€™s supposed to be done within 48 hoursโ€ฆ well it took them 3 weeks just to ask me for additional details (that I already gave them with the application anyway) - I lost my tickets and bookings - of course no way to email them, call or whatever

This made me think about the fact that I have all my money in Australia. While Iโ€™m doing nothing illegal I canโ€™t risk that some โ€œofficerโ€ with a bad day decide to freeze my account to investigate whatever and Iโ€™ll be left with nothing for who knows how long. Not to mention they usually canโ€™t grasp the concept of perpetual travelling.

So my question - anyone has RECENT experience with opening a bank account in SE Asia? Either personal or business (thinking about UK LLP or US LLC)

It seems that

a) countries such Singapore has assumption that everyone and his dog is laundering moneyโ€ฆ $500 at a timeโ€ฆ

b) Thailand with lazy and incompetent staff where you ask to open non-resident bank account just to be told โ€œdonโ€™t haveโ€ โ€ฆ you point on the 3x3 metres huge board behind them listing interest for non-resident bank account - answer โ€œaaah, yes yes canโ€™t open, new rulesโ€ (even while having a Thai with me)

Thanks!

I'll be entering the UK for 6 months, will immigration ask to see my finances?

by @shayna 8yr 8 years ago  | 24 comments

Hi!

I (American) and my husband (Brazilian) are going to London for 6 months.

Heโ€™s going to study English - heโ€™s already registered & paid for the course.

Iโ€™m going to be a touristโ€ฆ and work on my online business.

Iโ€™ve heard UK border control can be a bit difficult and am wondering if they are likely to ask for financial evidence that we can support ourselves for six months.

I have savings in the bank, but of course Iโ€™ll also be receiving regular, stable income from the online business (I could show them a history of payments stretching back a year or more, if necessary).

Any thoughts/tips?

Thanks in advance!

Non-Personal alternative to maintaing a corporation for online business?

by @blueblueocean 8yr 8 years ago  | 2 comments

So Iโ€™m finding if you have a small online business, maintaining a corporation in a country that has many rules is just a headache. Lots of forms to file and even if you use an accountant you have to bring them up to speed, give them documents and receipts, itโ€™s almost the same amount of workโ€ฆOn the other hand, you save some money and donโ€™t usually make pension contributions.

Has anyone found a solution thatโ€™s easier? Like giving the business to a friend or family member and they can wire you funds as an employee perhaps?

Can I make my personal (tax) residency a virtual office?

by @nevergoingback 9yr 9 years ago  | 12 comments

At this moment I am traveling the world. It has been a year since I have unsubscribed form the Netherlands and just keep on wanting to travel. I love the way I am living now but I do prefer to have a โ€œhomeโ€ base. And I think the best thing todo is get residency in a country where they are not counting the days you are there and has a territorial tax system.

My picks are:
Costa Rica, Panama, Malaysia

My question is however, because I am not going to be there alot I think its a waste of money to rent a appartment for 1500 or so per mont. Especially if I consider that my home address where I will be receiving bank docs etc I also do not want to have that sent to a sketchy home.

Do you happen to know a solution to this? For example would it be possible to have my home address at a Regus virtual office so that my mail will be handeled as wel?

I know the best option is to buy a house but that would be a very expensive mailbox :stuck_out_tongue:
Hope somebody could help me on this!

Corporate bank account opened in HK - where to open a personal bank account?

by @romandz 9yr 9 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi there,

Me and my 2 partners have opened a HK company and a corporate bank account at HSBC in HK.

We are wondering where is the best place to open personal bank accounts to pay ourselves dividends / salaries. Is HSBC in HK a good idea or shall we rather open personal bank accounts in other juridictions than HK?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Iโ€™m curious about your favorite cities/towns/areas south of the USA!

We are hearing nice general things about Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama, but weโ€™d love to know what drew you to your nomad spot, and why you loved it. Thanks so much!
