What mobile plans do you recommend in Guatamala and Belize?

in Belize by @tschentscher 8yr  | 2 comments

Hi every one.
Iโ€™m travelling to Guatamala and Belize in a couple of days and was wondering whatโ€™s the best mobile-data option (Best speed and coverage) around here? Iโ€™ve looked at Tigo or Claro. Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you so Much. For anyone else reading this, i ended up buying a 20gb sim-card from TIGO (79$) just in the arrival hall before immigration. Iโ€™m sitting now at El Peradon Surf House with 3G 10/7mb. In Guatemala City i had 4G/LTE coverage and 15/15mb . So everything turned out perfectly.

I donโ€™t know about Belize, but I am in Guatemala and have been successfully using Movistar. For 100 Queztales (about $13 USD) you can get a pre-paid 30 day plan with 1 GB of data, which seems to be plenty if you are mainly using it for email, Waze and a little internet browsing. Movistar has good 4G/LTE coverage in Guatemala City, Antigua and Panajachel. I havenโ€™t really tried it anywhere else. The nice thing is that I believe you can use your Guatemalan chip in Belize (and vice versa) without roaming charges.

Advice on phone plans? 1 year in Europe

by @larsheather 5yr 5 years ago  | 8 comments

Weโ€™re Americans planning to be in Europe for all of 2020 - approx. 90 days in each country, and alternating Schengen and non-Schengen. Our destinations will likely include four of these: Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Romania, and Spain.
Can anyone give us advice on cell phones? We would prefer to keep our current (U.S) numbers if at all possible. We donโ€™t anticipate making many local calls, but will phone the U.S. about once a week. Weโ€™ll use our phones for internet quite often.
Any advice for our situation would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather and Lars

What's the best mobile-data option in New Zealand for nomads?

in New Zealand by @goldsaj 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi All! Iโ€™ve heard Spark and Vodafone are the best. I plan to move around, so I care mostly about having good coverage, and all Iโ€™ll need is around 1 GB of data or so.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

TMobile for Continuous Travel?

in Mobile , United States by @jackgopack 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

TMobile advises their international plan requires me to reside in the US for 3 months of each year, however I may be there only 1 month (or less). Anyone using their plan continuously? Rigid requirement?

How can I monitor my data usage when I have limited amounts of mobile data?

by @littleshiva 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

I use a mobile internet stick that gives me 1 gigabyte of bandwidth in a 24-hour period. If I use it all up in half that time (easy with print jobs) I have to either wait it out or use another stick. What are some of the things I can do to keep bandwidth from being used without my knowledge? (macbook pro / Yosemite) I looked in the activity monitor and safari seemed to be using a lot so I keep it off now when Iโ€™m not using it, and I paused synching on dropbox and creative cloud until Iโ€™m hooked up to wifi. Any other tricks?

What's best internet solution for travelers? SkyRoam vs Global Roaming Data plans

by @alexmarinov 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

Whatโ€™s up nomads!

What do you use to get internet for work when you travel? Iโ€™m trying to figure out the best option to get internet when Iโ€™m traveling. For now mostly in Europe and mostly for conference calls with screen sharing. Iโ€™m willing to spend $200-300 per month.

I need to:

  1. tether my laptop to my data plan on my phone, or on another device (like SkyRoam which I donโ€™t have yet, but considering)
  2. have data on my phone for essentials like Google Maps when driving around.

My US carrier is Sprint Wireless. I have unlimited data, which I can enable globally at no extra charge but itโ€™s supposedly 3G, but doesnโ€™t really work. Sprint also has a plan called Sprint Global Roaming, which offers high speed internet, but itโ€™s $30 per 1GB which can add up to $500-$600 per month given my usage.

Iโ€™m not always close to WiFi or Co-Working spaces. Iโ€™m looking for a solution that would basically allow me to get on a Google Hangout or GoToMeeting call on my laptop from my car.

Any experience with gadgets like SkyRoam or similar ones from Verizon or AT&T? How good and reliable are those?

Any ideas? What do you use?

Thanks,
Alex

How do you deal with getting data on your mobile while travelling?

by @nomads_and_drifters 7yr 7 years ago  | 15 comments

Hi,
I wondered how everybody deals with getting data on their phone in each country they travel. Is there a way around it? It is always such a pain having to buy and activate sim cards everywhere. I have tried the company โ€œworldsimโ€ and had an international sim for a while, but they where terrible and ended up to be super expensive.

Whatโ€™s the best mobile-data option in Poland for nomads?

in Poland by @swynt 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi everyone! I will be heading to Poland in two weeks for around ten days. I will be in Poznan, Gdansk, Warschau and Krakau for travelling (the main purpose) and working (as freelancer). For working purpose, I need to be able to connect to internet for most of the time. So, could anyone give any advise which sim card and mobile data option should I get? It doesnโ€™t have to be cheap, but it should have good coverage area and big data plan (around 3 - 5 GB). Thanks.

What kinds of plans are other British nomads considering in wake of the EU referendum?

by @ani_goes_tweet 8yr 8 years ago  | 19 comments

To put it mildly, Iโ€™m very disappointed by the prospect of losing my EU passport as a result of the referendum on 23 June.

There may be some UK nomads who do not mind and will be content with their British passport, but for others like me who possibly value their EU citizenship more than their British citizenship, what alternatives are you considering?

What are the options for mobile internet in Phuket, Thailand?

in Phuket , Thailand by @alejandrow 8yr 8 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi,

I will be traveling in Thailand from november to december and would like to know which internet option I should choose. I need to use internet for writing and research and also 1-2 skype calls a week.

I need whatโ€™s best in Krabi and Phuketโ€ฆ I already have an unlocked pocket Wi-Fi that allows both 3G and 4G, so I only need a Sim Card filled with internet. Unlimited data would be the best, but in reality I would be fine with around 10 GB if the speed is good.

So which options do I have and what are your experience?

Regards!

What's the best mobile hotspot device for international travel?

by @stefanlesser 8yr 8 years ago  | 7 comments

Browsing this forum a lot, I learned that the best option for mobile data is buying a local SIM card in pretty much every country I go to. Ok, thatโ€™s manageable.

Now I was wondering which mobile hotspot to buy, because I will have more devices with me that I want to connect to the Internet, and my girlfriend will have even more devices with her to connect, too.

When I was looking at just one manufacturerโ€™s offerings, Iโ€™m already overwhelmed by the complexity of options.

Should I just use my main mobile phoneโ€™s hotspot feature for this?
Should I get a separate mobile hotspot device for that? Which one? Any recommendations?
How do you do this?

What's the best mobile-data option in Thailand for nomads?

in Thailand by @iamfledge 8yr 8 years ago  | 17 comments

As I donโ€™t know how long I may be in Thailand so canโ€™t commit to a minimum term like a 12-month contract (1-month rolling is ok).

Iโ€™m hoping to find the best SIM to stick in my phone and get as much data as possible - ideally enough for laptop tethering when Wi-Fi isnโ€™t immediately available also.

Is it possible to either sign-up in advance and get it delivered; or to get it from a shop and activate it that day? Or is there a waiting time of days for it to be sent and activated?

What is the best mobile carrier for a foreigner in USA?

by @wcitizen 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi DN community! Iโ€™m going to spend 4 month in US and wondering if somebody can recommend me cheap, but reliable=), mobile operator. Requirements:

  • simcard should be suitable for my unlocked iPhone
  • minor usage of texting and callings
  • minor usage of internet data, but with 4G support
Hope this makes sense. Happy to add more specific info, if needed.

Cheers!

How far in advance do you usually make travel plans?

by @hannahvictorius 9yr 9 years ago  | 17 comments

Iโ€™m starting to make plans for September, and was just wondering how far in advance people tend to book things (flight/accomm), or does it depend on the situation.

I know Iโ€™d like to be in Croatia and return to the UK around a certain time, so I guess Iโ€™m not being that flexible. However, I am curious to see how others travel.

Do you end up booking flights only days in advance? How have you found this in terms of value and booking earlier?

What gear do you use for mobile wifi?

by @richlitt 9yr 9 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™ve got an iPhone 5s, which I have used to work remotely by tethering in Europe and in the States. Iโ€™m heading to SEA in a couple of weeks, and Iโ€™ll be getting a SIM card there - but should I buy something else, with better range, or for the local 3G connection there?

What do you use?

Could you give me advise on my travel plans?

by @louieb 9yr 9 years ago  | 2 comments

Hey everyone! Love the site!

Iโ€™m from Amman, Jordan, Iโ€™m currently a senior university student (one semester left!), and I also work as a part-time software developer at a Jordanian based semi-distributed company. My plan is to stay as a full-time remote employee after I graduate.

Iโ€™ve been researching the Digital Nomad/Location Independent lifestyle for about a year now and was thinking about becoming a full DN after I graduate in the summer.

I was thinking about going to Europe for about 90 days (visa limit) and making Germany my first destination. The benefit of this is that Iโ€™ll visit a dear friend of mine whoโ€™s studying there, and explore parts of Europe that I havenโ€™t been to before. After Europe I plan to go back to my country and then leave for Turkey for about 90 days (visa on arrival).

I know that a major reason for becoming a DN is that you get to have a first world country salary and live in a low-cost country, and obviously to explore new places youโ€™ve never been to before.

After thinking a lot about this plan, I have come to a conclusion that I wonโ€™t benefit as much from the salary difference, Iโ€™ll be paying most of my salary on living expenses rather than on travel and savings.

My question is (sorry for taking too long), should I keep living in Jordan and take a long trip to Europe once a year, or do you advise on doing something else?

Thanks for you help

Update: Jordan is very cheap in terms of living-cost.

Whatโ€™s the best mobile-data option in Australia (Melbourne) for nomads?

in Melbourne , Australia by @iamfledge 9yr 9 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m due to spend a couple of weeks in Melbourne in April and looking to see if thereโ€™s a good non-contract mobile data option for my time there.

Ideally Iโ€™d like to be able to tether to my laptop. Any Aus based nomads able to make some recommendations?
