What shoes/footwear do you pack?

by @danielgenser 9yr  | 24 comments

Iโ€™m thinking through what Iโ€™m going to bring for footwear. Iโ€™d like to limit it to two pairs โ€“ one in my bag, one on me. Weโ€™re going to be in tropical/beach areas, but also cities. Iโ€™d like to be able to look presentable when needed, but also reasonable for non-urban areas, too.

Considering my existing Nike sneakers plus these sneaker/boot hybrid things by Reef โ€“ the Reef Spinaker: http://www.zappos.com/reef-spiniker-mid-nb-resrv-collection-black-tan

They seem super lightweight and comfortable (I tried them on at REI the other day). Has anyone else tried them out?

Hi all,

I didnโ€™t want to open another topic, since I have very similar question, so I decided to revive this topic.

Iโ€™m gonna be โ€˜nommadingโ€™ in south east Asia for 6-8 months. Reading through various forums, my idea is to have just one pair of shoes (+ some flip flops), period.
This pair of shoes would be trail running shoes. They seem to be quality, breathing shoes, quite comfy for traveling, as well as for daily trips, and of course running. I was thinking about something like Merrell All Out Peak, which seems to be high quality trail running shoe.

The question is: Is my logic totally โ€˜offโ€™, and does it make sense to have trail running shoes as your โ€˜primary shoe of choiceโ€™ (for SA Asia)?

I wouldnโ€™t worry about it too much, you can always sell/buy another pair in sea if needed. But I have flip flops and 1 pair of a different type of Merrill trail runners. They are dark grey and I wear them to the gym and on very rare occasions to a club. But you will be in Flipflops all the time so again donโ€™t over think it.

This probably wonโ€™t be relevant for most of the males on here but I am huge fan of Hot Chocolate designs. They have a range of really cute designs, are really comfortable right out of the box (a huge deal for me because I get blisters easily) and are really lightweight to pack. The only real downside is that they donโ€™t offer a lot of arch support for serious walking but that can be fixed with an inner sole. Oh, and they arenโ€™t waterproof but they do dry quickly.

Well, I usually prefer plain colors for shoes because I think that theyโ€™re more matchable, but the ones you talk about look really comfortable, I could do an exception to the rule!

The cliche, shoes make the man (or woman) is true.

Asia or travel to other parts of the world is mostly, not that much different.

I see lots of people miscalculating and making mistakes with shoe choice.

Yes, if you are going to be living at the beach and thatโ€™s it, throw some sandals in a bag and call it a day. Maybe workout shoes, which I would.

However, if you are going to be mostly living in cities then make sure you bring proper footwear.

For one, in cities like Bangkok and Saigon, and other Southeast Asian cities, your shoes will get absolutely filthy and destroyed. And yes, there are people around to help you clean them, but they will get destroyed and fall apart.

Therefore, for this reason, I am not a fan of these dual purpose shoes that look like orthopedic shoes anyhow.

Shit gets destroyed fast. Especially if you ride motorbikes around in the city.

The other big reason.

If you donโ€™t want to look like Jesusโ€™ brother rolling into a nightclub or nice restaurant, well, youโ€™re in a city, and you should expect to be dressed for a city.

Finally, if youโ€™re a big foot like me (US12) - you can really be screwed in places like Southeast Asia.

In Saigon, it is nearly, 100% impossible for me to get any kind of shoes. There is a place that does custom menโ€™s lace ups for my size, but itโ€™s expensive and takes two months.

Bangkok is a little better, and has gotten better over the last 3 or 4 years, but expect a very limited range.

Thus, youโ€™ll get to Southeast Asia and be stuck if youโ€™re a big foot.

My advice if you want to be in and mostly live in cities, suck it up, and bring a reasonable range of shoes. Sneakers, lace ups, work out shoes and flips flops at a minimum.

If they get irritating and clunky, you can always chuck em or give em away.

Once youโ€™re here. Good luck. Your options will be very limited.

When I was first packing for my travels, my main shoe criteria was simple: YOU CAN ONLY BRING ONE PAIR! This meant that the same pair had to be usable for walking, hiking, lounging, and even fancy restaurants if needed.

There are a few companies that make shoes that look like classic leather Oxfords on the outside but feel like sneakers on the inside. Iโ€™ve had some success with Ecco, particularly the Atlantas. Other brands frequently mentioned in this category include Rockport and the Cole Haans with Nike soles.

A general foreword on shoes: IMHO one doesnโ€™t need more than 3 maybe 4 pair of shoes, including sandals, even when you donโ€™t travel. For traveling maximum 2 is always enough.

In the past few years there are two type of shoes that I really likedโ€ฆ One is the Adidas trekking shoes. Theyโ€™re good for walking, all purpose road shoes, and if you, like me, enjoy trekking, theyโ€™ll be very handy. Another brand I like is Keen. I like shoes that last and are reliable, these two have met all expectations.

I love (LOVE) my Palladium canvas boots. Theyโ€™re tough, comfortable for cruising cities, crushing mountain trails, and chasing down buses, and light enough to pack alongside my (new favorite) pair of Teva Universal sandals. Unless Iโ€™m packing something more formal, this is all I really ever use. - even when Iโ€™m presented with a full closet at home.

My Lems Boulder Boots arrived from the US this week, been rocking them out today and so far very happy.

I also got a pair of Primal 2 (also by Lems) for when I want something a bit more lightweight than a boot.

Iโ€™ve also considered buying the Luna sandals ( but Iโ€™ll probably just get something similar made in Thailand/Vietnam for like 20% of the price (Iโ€™m not spending $100+ on minimalist slippers)

But yeah, Iโ€™m a big fan of the concept, since regular flip-flops are ruining your feet/ankle mobility and, as such, set people up for knee/hip/low back problems down the line.

Another vote here for Vivobarefoots, though Iโ€™ve found the glue on them is sub par after a couple years of near constant wear.

They are like wearing slippers, super comfy if youโ€™re into barefoot shoes.

Iโ€™ve got a pair of the Freudโ€™s which I use as my day to day casual shoes. In my pre-nomad days I wore a pair of Raโ€™s to work every day, never had an issue with them and they were the most comfortable office shoes Iโ€™d ever had.

In my recent tour of SE Asia I took a pair of Ultraโ€™s (the older ones with the removable liner) which are great as a versatile waterproof shoe. The foam used is good for heavier bouts of walking on cement.

Outside of that I also packed some basic haviannas flip flops.

I have a pair of Skechers GoWalk 2 shoes. Theyโ€™re slip ons and theyโ€™re super comfortable. I also brought a pair of dress shoes, because the first leg of my trip was actually doing serious business. However, now that Iโ€™m back in nomad mode, I hardly ever wear them.

Yeah, I love them. I think I walk funny, because my toes end up loosening the stitching in the front. Have to get them repaired intermittently, but otherwise they are great.

I have this issue with many shoes, though, so probably not a Skechers issue.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

How do you organize cables in your backpack?

Iโ€™m currently thinking of getting a packing cube and velcro binder after I used a GRID-IT organizer which couldnโ€™t fit all my stuff in the end.

I have 3 questions: savings, home base and what's in your backpack?

by @msurocks99 8yr 8 years ago  | 5 comments

I am based in Dhaka, Bangladesh and I am planning to start my nomad life later December. I was preparing before that.

I had some burning decisions to be made before that.

Savings : How much you need to have savings before starting your nomad life and how much will be enough and constant and easily accessible to everywhere I mean mode keeping the money i.e Cash or Banks

Home Base: Do you guys have a home back and do you come back there in a routine period such as every month or so.

And Whatโ€™s in your backpack: I need a extra 23 inch monitor for work otherwise I donโ€™t feel comfortable, I am thinking ways to fit in my backpack, what is the common size of your bags and do you carry a lot luggage, usually picking luggage takes a lot time and a lot hassle too. I prefer only backpacking and hand luggage thatโ€™s why.

Would you please suggest and share your experiences with me.

Best

Shihab
