What's good places in South East Asia to work with beaches?

by @kumi | 5yr  | 10 comments

Hi there, now Iโ€™m thinking to explorer beaches / islands in SE Asia which are good for nomad-working. Do you have any recommendations?

The conditions are, I think,
[Must]

  • Internet (faster is better)
  • Cheap living cost (My budget is about 500 USD/month)
  • Clean beach
    [Want]
  • Good cafes
  • Good foods
  • Not so many people are there and not so famous already
Co-working space would be nice, but not necessary for me.

Iโ€™ve already found Koh Phangan in Thailand is amazing, and Iโ€™m going to try Koh Lanta
Now Iโ€™m in Sihanoukville Cambodia, itโ€™s still nice (the beach I am is not so clean for swimming though), and going to travel Koh Ta Kiev for 2-3 days but unfortunately there is no wi-fi and only very-poor mobile internet, so I canโ€™t say itโ€™s for digital nomad. :frowning:

I would appreciate if you share your brilliant experience
Thank you!

Hi Kumi!

I just arrived on Koh Chang on Monday and I can definitely recommend it given what youโ€™re looking for :slightly_smiling:

There are several great beaches all around the island, wonderful cheap food, fast internet (at least I havenโ€™t had a problem where Iโ€™m staying). The beach where Iโ€™m staying (Lonely Beach) doesnโ€™t have too many cafรฉs/coffee shops or coworking spaces. That said, I still havenโ€™t found a shortage of places to work between my bungalow, the main office/restaurant, and a few small cafรฉs/restaurants around town. Cheap accommodation could be a little difficult to find since everything seems to be pretty booked, but if you hop from village to village youโ€™ll surely find something that fits your budget.

Hi @Johnnybd, thank you! Year, Otres beach is really beautiful. I went Koh Ta Kiev island for these days, but there is no Wi-Fi so completely holiday- no nomad working there.
Is โ€œWish You Were Hereโ€ the name of bungalows? I would visit there in next trip of Sihanoukville! Thanks.

Hi @ericste_in, thank you!
Iโ€™m surprised how Thailand islands are great for nomads! I just have an experience of Koh Phangan, so I must explorer many islands thereโ€ฆ Koh Chang also!

I donโ€™t know if Sri Lanka qualifies as SEA, and itโ€™s a bit ouf of a digital nomads path but beaches were good: HIkkaduwa, Bentota, Pelana (Weligama) and 3g quite good. Still, I hear itโ€™s more expensive than Thai.

If you donโ€™t necessarily need fast internet, you have lots more options:

Thank you @levelso !

Phuket is nice, I thought itโ€™s already famous and many people are there, so I havenโ€™t visited for long time, but may be worth to visit again.
Taiwan is nice place, very very fast internet, Iโ€™d like to explorer islands there (like Xiaoliuqiu / ๅฐ็‰็ƒ), but Iโ€™m a bit afraid itโ€™s expensive for me
Visiting Vietnam places is nice idea! I often visit Nha Trang. (Beach is not so clean though )

I will check the NomadList. Thanks!

Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™d consider Taipei a beach destination, maybe Kaohsiung.

As for the OP,
Kuching on the island of Borneo is cheap and there are beaches nearby as well as the famous Borneo rainforest.
Plenty of places in the Philippines fit your requirements and visa-wise, itโ€™s easy to stay there for a long time.
Hainan is China is both cheap and very nice (avoid Sanya) although the internet situation isnโ€™t ideal (very fast but a lot of sites are blocked).
If you double your budget, you might be able to get by on Lamma Island in Hong Kong. Great beaches in HK and the city is obviously one of the best in the world.

Hi there, Iโ€™m sorry for late reply. In these days, I went to No Wi-Fi island. Itโ€™s really nice, but not nice place for nomad working!

Hi nomadtax, yes, I think Kenting (ๅขพไธ) near Kaohsiung has beaches it Taiwan. Hualien may also.
Thank you for information, Iโ€™m interested in Borneo island!
Noted about Hainan (and Sanyaโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know why should avoid though).
HK sounds nice, I would go there after increasing my earning! Thanks.

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 | 1mo 1 month ago | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Best place in South East Asia to live for 6+ months per year

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager | 4mo 3 months ago | 1 comment

We're looking for a country in South East Asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 | 10mo 9 months ago | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

What's the first step now that I can work remotely?

Hi everyone and nice to e-meet you!
finally, after so long I found a job that allows me to work remotely.
But now? Do you have any practical advice that I can use to approach this new world?
In particular, I have to put my tax situation in order, do you know a good tax advisor from whom I can ask for advice? (Iโ€™m Italian but I live in Franceโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how long it will beโ€ฆ) )
Beyond that, any advice is welcome.
Thank you!

Should we go to South East Asia or Latin America with kids?

by @nomad4 | 1yr 1 year ago | 2 comments

Hi guys!

Weโ€™re leaving on Dec 1st for a 5-month DN experience with our kids, but we have second thoughts on our journey. We were supposed to do a trip in South-East Asia (Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia). Weโ€™re from Canada, and our clients are all in Canada right now (weโ€™re digital marketing consultants).

After comparing destinations, weโ€™re starting the think Latin America may be a better choice to make sure we keep most of our clients during these 5 months (same timezone). Also, it seems Latin America fits our needs too :

  • cheap (actually often cheaper than Chiang Mai according to Numbeo)
  • great weather (sunny while less hot than Asia)
  • business continuity : good wifi connection, limited time difference
  • learning opportunity : one single language = great opportunity to improve our Spanish
  • relaxed pace of life
  • kid-friendly
  • relatively safe (see countries below)

So here are our 2 options ; which one would you recommend for our criteria?

A: SEA : Thailand (Chiang Mai and a couple islands in the South), Indonesia (Bali and Lombok), Malaysia (Penang)
B: Latin America : Mexico (Playa Del Carmen/Tulum), Colombia (Medellin), Peru (Lima and other TBD towns), Chile (Santiago and other TBD towns), Argentina (Buenos Aires and other TBD towns).

Thanks!

Which places in South East Asia are suitable for kids?

by @nomad4 | 1yr 1 year ago | 3 comments

Hi everybody,

weโ€™re a family of 4 from Canada (Quebec province) leaving to Thailand on December 1st.
Our plan is to take things slowly and live in a peaceful environment while working a little and doing homeschooling to our 6-year-old son (plus escaping Canadian-cold winter )

This is roughly what our plan would look like:

  • arriving in Bangkok, staying there for about a week (air bnb probably)
  • moving to Chiang Mai then Krabi (most likely Ao Nang, Ao Tha Lane, Railay) or Koh Pha Ngan (North part) or Koh Chang (2-3 months)
  • then Indonesia (Bali/Gili islands) (1,5 months)
  • And Malaysia (Batu Ferengi, Penang) to finish (1 month)

Weโ€™re not city dwellers, and love being surrounded by nature.
Knowing that, what would be the best places for a family who want something quiet, walkable and with reliable Internet service?

Thanks!
Magali and Guillaume

What's the best warm destinations in Europe in the winter?

by @jammingsloth | 1yr 1 year ago | 33 comments

Planning ahead for the winter. Iโ€™ll be in Spain in the Fall and want to go someplace warm for the winter in or near Europe, but not Schengen. Was first thinking Cape Town, but the internet is slow and it is very far. Was also thinking:
Israel - but airbnb listings are very pricey.
Morocco?
Turkey - maybe a little chilly.

Any other suggestions?

What's the best bank account for a global nomad?

by @barrybjjoubert | 1yr 1 year ago | 25 comments

Dear all
As a wanna be nomad figuring out a way to get free of the rat race, I was wondering what is the best bank account to have while travelling the globe? I need an account where is easy for me to receive payments from all over the world and it also need to be a bank that I can find almost anywhere in the world. I want to avoid carry cash on me if itโ€™s possible.

What's the best CRM/system for managing remote work opportunities?

by @panoramica | 2yr 1 year ago | 3 comments

Iโ€™m currently doing some work through Upwork, but itโ€™s sporadic and Iโ€™m keen to get more active on other platforms like Freelancer, Toptal, CodeMentor, Fiverr etc

Currently Iโ€™m managing leads in a Google sheet. Basically itโ€™s just a list of projects I pitched for, how much I bid, what I did differently from the last pitch/bid, how much time went by before I got a offered a job etc.

Iโ€™m not actively following up anybody, and Iโ€™ve in fact โ€˜lostโ€™ a few jobs where the client was keen, but then disappeared without a trace. I guess I need to keep in touch with those people to ensure that they remain focussed on our agreementโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m also keen to take on more small projects concurrently, without dropping the ball on any of them.

Iโ€™ve done a quick Google and turned up a few names including Salesforce, Zoho, Nutshell, HighRise, Base, Nimble, etc etc. But testing out all these products isnโ€™t all that appealing, so I thought Iโ€™d ask here first

Ideally Iโ€™d like something that integrates with remote job boards in some way.

Feature list

Iโ€™ve done some research and currently have this feature list:

Proposal building & tracking

  • Compile proposals from snippets - technologies, past projects
  • Quickly pull together a realistic/client friendly quote
  • Test and measure different approaches
  • Beat proposal deadlines while maintaining quality
  • Fine tune pitch material to bid more quickly and win more work โ€“ templates
  • Store history about past projects involving common needs and technological solutions
  • Learn which proposal content is working, and which is not

Lead generation and client management (CRM)

  • store info about regular clients
  • track remote projects which Iโ€™ve pitched for
  • Remote Job Board integration
  • search multiple job sites for keywords
  • track projects across multiple remote platforms โ€“ API integration / message alert/response

Project Management & Scheduling

  • Break projects down into granular tasks
  • Gantt chart to visualise overlapping jobs
  • Calendar to schedule daily work, deadlines, R&D
  • follow up, plan and schedule future work now, rather than once current work has dried up
  • offline reminders via a dedicated Android app
  • time tracking โ€“ to get an idea of true cost, to flag issues to client
  • BitBucket integration

Billing

  • Integration with Xero
  • tracking status of payments, actual payment date vs expected payment clearance date

Marketing

  • Get repeat business
  • Build Word Of Mouth
  • Proactive lead generation
  • Publish proposals as case studies

Cheers,
Dan

What's the best place to incorporate an online business?

by @octave | 2yr 1 year ago | 63 comments

I have an commerce website. We get around 1000 orders per month and this is going to get quite a bit bigger in next few years.

I am British. I live in Thailand.
Im not allowed to majority own a Thai business and small foreign entrepreneurs are not really welcome. So i need an offshore company.

I need PayPal and an ecommerce internet merchant account. Also looking at alternatives like worldpay. 2checkout etc

Does PayPal need me to be a resident to the country i register my account to? Are there complications being a non resident to get other payment solutions?

Apparently in Hong Kong you need 2 years trading history to get an Internet Mechant Account and they generally turn their noses up at those with less than $1m(us) a year turn over. Singapore seems a bit easier.

I really want to avoid paperwork and book keeping. I hate it.

So i was looking at Seychelles, Panama, BVI, Belize.

Does anyone have experience with payment providers in these countries?

Most nomads i see donโ€™t really have a high volume of small monthly transactions which i do. Im going around in circles and donโ€™t know where to start.

Ill also need a bank account for business and a personal bank account to pay my salary into

Nomad volleyball hubs, know of one? (Asia)

by @brmolin | 2yr 1 year ago | 2 comments

Hey all! Planning to head to Southeast Asoa later this year and Iโ€™m looking for a place thatโ€™s got a good community of people who play beach volleyball. Iโ€™m in Medellin at the moment and joined up with a community of locals and expats who play a few times a week and Iโ€™ve gotta say Iโ€™ve quickly fallen in love with the game!

I want to find a place thatโ€™s got a good community I can play and practice with somewhere down there. Mix of locals and expats are both fine, though ideally thereโ€™s at least a few expats so I can communicate with at least one person in the same language! Iโ€™m open to indoor volleyball too, though I know thatโ€™s much less common (especially amongst nomads).

Appreciate any direction yaโ€™ll can give!

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 | 2yr 2 years ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!
