What's the Thailand visa situation for digital nomads in 2015?

in Thailand by @opt | 5yr  | 8 comments

This is a FAQ, a โ€œlightning rodโ€ of sorts, and there are whole sites dedicated to discussion about the topic, but what is the real Thai visa situation in 2015 for nomads?

Iโ€™ve spent hours reading about this, but with all the tangents and pointless debate in various forums, itโ€™s difficult to get straight facts and answers (to the extent possible, understanding that this can be a gray area).

One one hand there are people talking about staying 10+ years, but then thereโ€™s advice from, for example, @CoffeeShopCEO, saying: โ€œThai consulates are also beginning to reject people who have back to back visas in their passports, so after a year or so, go do some travelling.โ€

It seems confusing to talk on one hand (as so many video series and similar money-making ventures do) about all the great deals on apartments and long-term stays, and on the other about taking all your stuff with you on border runs, because you may not be coming back.

I imagine the best answer is โ€œYMMV,โ€ but it seems like a precarious way to live while trying to build a business: stretching the truthโ€“or outright lyingโ€“about reasons for travel, hoping you donโ€™t get the wrong government representative on the wrong day, trying to get the foreign income exemption without paying taxes in the destination country, etc.

From the glut of videos by Chiang Mai-based foreigners alone, it would seem that many are living (and selling) this lifestyle successfully, but it isnโ€™t quite as simple as portrayed, no?

Letโ€™s not get bog down with details an continue on with happy lives.

Bottom line is: this is much better deal for anyone who wants to maximize time in Thailand and travel at will with unlimited entries. Not tested yet but yes with a little bit of planning, 9 months is possible. In comparison with current deal for US people:
http://thaiembdc.org/consular-services/tourist-visas/category-tr/

Also, keep in mind this is a tourist visa and one has to be careful with it, or accidents happen: http://asiancorrespondent.com/127125/thailand-immigration-officials-raid-chiang-mai-co-working-space/

Ok, maybe I am missing something but I still do not see the differenceโ€ฆ

You stated that you can stay 60 days per entry, which is exactly the same for the current multiple entry. So currently I can get a double entry which also gives me 6 months - 60 days per entry + 30 days extension each time.

Edit: In some countries you can even get a triple entry which gives you effectively 9 months.

The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs have made an announcement via their
official Facebook page that the new Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV)
will be available from Friday 13th November 2015.The METV will
cost 5,000 baht and grants holders multiple entries into Thailand for a
six month period for stays of up to 60 days per entry.

Hey @Eddie, I appreciate the response, and agree Iโ€™d like to hear what others have to say about the current situation, in addition to your own comments.

The reference to lying wasnโ€™t about discussion among travelers, as much as between travelers and (various) government or commercial representativesโ€“basically everybody else. A life of deception is the antithesis of the sort of โ€œauthenticโ€ living I believe many are seeking, and personal choice is still the dominant factor here.

Iโ€™ve โ€œheardโ€ the education visa is receiving additional scrutiny now, too.

Itโ€™s funny because I can watch a hundred videos touting the cheap and easy living, while glossing over the legal aspects of what resembles a life on the run (which is cool or romantic or glamorous for about five minutes).

While I donโ€™t have any direct experience with this yet (leaving in a few months). Itโ€™s difficult to get a straight answer because everyoneโ€™s experiences are different. Yes, there may be some people who get lucky and are able to do several back to back visa runs without problem. However, others may get denied. Itโ€™s difficult to give a true answer becauseโ€ฆwell itโ€™s up to the immigration official to let you in or not, itโ€™s completely at their discretion.

Also, itโ€™s not only your visa, but your country of origin, your appearance, do you look suspicious? Do you look presentable? When they ask you questions, whatโ€™s your tone of voice? Since itโ€™s up to the officer to grant you permission it can vary on the impression you give and the vibe that they get. Maybe some of these people youโ€™re talking about are just smooth talkers, speak some of the language, or make a good impression.

Some might say that they โ€œlive in Thailandโ€ but in reality they spend 3 months there, then spend maybe a month or two somewhere else (so itโ€™s not back to back) and then go back to Thailand for 3 months. But I really wouldnโ€™t call this lying. Donโ€™t hate the playerโ€ฆhate the game.

Also, there are other visas you can get that allow longer stay. Some get education or business visas (which I think are good for a year).

However, it does seem like Iโ€™m hearing about more people having troubles lately. So, the people you mentioned who have lived there for 10+ years just got there in the beginning when it was new and only a few people were doing it.

Just my thoughts, but Iโ€™d like to hear what some more experienced travelers have to say.

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @nrgetik | 3mo 3 months ago | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

by @larsheather | 4mo 4 months ago | 5 comments

Anyone know of any groups or resources for Ph.D. students working on dissertation while living as a digital nomad? I know there are several virtual writing groups around, but wondered if there were any specifically for digital nomads, particularly those who are dissertating.

Thanks!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen | 4mo 4 months ago | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark | 6mo 5 months ago | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks
Mark

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira | 6mo 6 months ago | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 | 7mo 6 months ago | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone | 7mo 7 months ago | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

by @rose_davis | 8mo 8 months ago | 7 comments

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). Iโ€™ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but Iโ€™d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities Iโ€™m considering:

  • Quito, Ecuador
  • Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Cartagena, Columbia
  • Antigua, Guatemala
  • San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Fast/easily accessible internet
  • Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
  • Safe for women
  • Some sort of spiritual community (Iโ€™m also a yoga teacher)
  • Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? Iโ€™m also completely open to other recommendations.

Thanks!
Rose

Where are the nomads in Mexico City?

I just landed as a n00b digital nomad in Mexico City, and I am wonderingโ€ฆ Where are all the international digital nomads hiding around here? I have been to several coworking spaces (Selina etc.) only to find A LOT of local Mexican workers and businesses. Donโ€™t get me wrong, that is all fine, but I was hoping to meet some international nomads! Any advice?

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio | 9mo 8 months ago | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brmolin | 10mo 9 months ago | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

Are there any nomads from India?

in India by @ankitdas123 | 10mo 10 months ago | 56 comments

I have seen a lot of posts from different people across the world, but not even a single post from someone in India, who has been a nomad, either living within the country or traveling to another one.

Would definitely love to hear stories from such people. We are a couple traveling as social nomads who are trying to bridge the gap between the rural and urban societies in India. We have started out very humble and do not have much resources, so looking out for help from the community.

Beyond that, any advice is welcome.

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

in Bari, Italy by @mitch_dina | 10mo 10 months ago | 7 comments

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.
