Where to stay for a month in Taipei?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @gnefkow | 4yr  | 7 comments

Hello,

My girlfriend and I will be heading to Taipei for a month in February, and weโ€™re trying to figure out where to live. Any advice onโ€ฆ

  • How to find a place? Are there any websites where we could find a place for a month?
  • Area of town - which district should we try to stay in?

Weโ€™re on a budget, looking for something that would be around $400usd per month if possible.

RE: SIM card
If you ask in 7/11 in English they can point you in the right direction if they donโ€™t stock them. Thereโ€™s a 7/11 near Taipei main station that has them. I got mine while inside the MRT area in Taipei main station from some cell phone accessory shop next to the 7/11. I think $10 or something for every 1gb refill, with first 3 days unlimited data. You need to bring your passport.

Your best bet is to look at places on AirBnb. There are a few hostels that have listings on there that are pretty cheap. I recently found a website for a place called InnApartment that looks pretty good too (innapartment.weebly.com) and Iโ€™m planning on staying there when I visit in March.

But overall, Taipeiโ€™s accommodation websites are local-focused and most sites are going to be in Chinese, which makes it hard to find places online.

Similarly, the coworking spaces are more focused on local startups and creatives, and again, most sites are in Chinese. Though Iโ€™ve heard of an up-and-coming coworking space called http://futurewardcentral.com/ and the founder seems to want to attract more digital nomads. There are also a few other options but I havenโ€™t checked them out yet.

On the plus side, Taiwan has amazing infrastructure, fast internet, and youโ€™ll be able to work from anywhere as itโ€™s pretty much the coffee shop capital of Asia.

Oh and the food is other-wordly too. So more pros than cons

Actually, we ended up looking on AirBnB, found a place with a good price and rented it for a month.

It was my girlfriend and I, so we had a few things we were looking for in particularโ€ฆ a private room big enough for both of us, a desk (since we were both working remote), decent internet, etcโ€ฆ

Lots of hosts on AirBnB give a discount for a month, so the price was pretty reasonable, about what we would have payed to rent a place on a student facebook group that we were trying to find something on. More importantly, getting our exact dates to line up with someone elseโ€™s exact dates ended up being impossible.

We stayed in Daโ€™an, which we really loved. We were in a nice neighborhood right next to a night market and super close to the MRT (metro).

Taipei was our first stop, and afterwards we ended up using AirBnB to book month-long places in Japan (Osaka), Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

I would say that if youโ€™ve staying for several months AirBnB may not be the best option price-wise, though you probably can send people messages to get further discounts. Since we were only staying a month, AirBnB was perfect.

Also, since it was mentionedโ€ฆ

We didnโ€™t end up getting a co-working place, but it may have been nice to have. Compared to other places we went in Asia, it was REALLY hard to get a SIM card in Taiwan since neither me nor my girlfriend speak Chinese.

That said, people are really friendly. If youโ€™re staying for a bit, it may be worth finding some other (Chinese-speaking) foreign people / Taiwanese people to help show you around and help you get a SIM card

Taiwan was great, though, I canโ€™t wait to go back. PM me if you have any other questions!

Currently in Taipei for 3 months. Key is to be walking distance to an MRT (Metro) stop, as it is very fast and convenient. Honestly in that range I think it would be tough. I believe you can definitely find places in Taiwan in that range, but will be further away from the city center of Taipei. There might also be more options in other more Southern cities like Tainan.

How do I get Travel/Medical Insurance for Portugal for visa application from Australia?

in Portugal by @jonathanpoh | 1d 1 day ago | 5 comments

I'm preparing my Portuguese D7 long-term visa application and one of the required documents is proof of travel insurance with medical coverage. However, as an Australian citizen, if put that as my country of residence in many travel insurance companies' quick quote forms, I'm unable to get ANY insurance coverage at all because of the current travel ban out of Australia, and the Australian govt's 'Do Not Travel' advice to ALL countries. I know that Aussies are applying for, and successfully getting visas from the Portuguese Consulate here, so where and how are they fulfilling this insurance requirement if insurers aren't selling any coverage? Does anybody know or have any ideas?

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint | 2d 2 days ago | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 | 3d 2 days ago | 7 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 | 3d 3 days ago | 0 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Best place for solo UK traveller for surf, sun & working between Oct and Dec??

in Tenerife, Spain by @leojb | 5d 4 days ago | 0 comments

Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.

Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??

Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.

Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.

Thanks a million. Much love.

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques | 10d 9 days ago | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

UK Expats travelling to Greece?

in Bulgaria by @davda1546 | 17d 16 days ago | 2 comments

Hi all, my husband and I have been living in Bulgaria for the past month and were hoping to travel to Greece next. Have any UK nationals entered Greece lately? I believe that anyone entering Greece requires a negative COVID test 72 hours before travel - is this what they are requiring at the borders please? (Reason we ask is for Bulgaria we filled out forms but weren't asked for them) Thanks.

What is the best way to approach Taiwan?

in Taiwan by @zoxel | 8mo 8 months ago | 4 comments

We have never been in Taiwan (a couple of travelers) and I am just wondering is possible to find there some quite clean place to hang for a while? How it is better to start? Are there any websiteโ€™s for short and long term rentals? It looks like AirBnB is not that popular there. So it seems that usual tactics - rent hotel or airbnb for short term and then look for long term just driving around might not work. It looks like everything there in Chinese - so if there are any tips how to overcome this - that is more then welcome  Overall just interested in any suggestion - where best to go first? Also is it hard to extend your stay there - we are digital nomads - so working for some company overseas and probably will be extending as a tourist (If we like there).
Sorry for so many questions - but this is really some terra incognita for me

Taipei or Kaohsiung for May?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @autumnflame | 3yr 3 years ago | 5 comments

My partner and I are looking at staying in Taiwan for the month of May, and were wondering if Taipei or Kaohsiung is better for living and working in? Our primary purpose will be working, so cheap food/accommodation (thatโ€™s relatively easy for a foreigner to find and obtain) and fast internet are our biggest priorities, but some sightseeing and nightlife would be nice. (I know Taipei has the latter, not as sure about Kaohsiung.) Thanks!

Any renting advice for a longer stay in Taipei?

in Taipei, Taiwan by @sanderversluys | 5yr 4 years ago | 0 comments

Iโ€™ll arrive in Taipei in april and need a place for at least couple of months but Iโ€™m not eager to rent something from seeing the online listing alone.

Any advice on good price points, location or trustworthy real estate companies and such is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Does anyone have first hand experience with Project Fi in Taipei or Beijing?

Iโ€™m curious to know if it actually works. The website lists China and Taiwan as countries where it should theoretically work, I was just looking to hear from anyone using it first hand.

Are there any digital nomads in Kaohsiung, Taiwan?

in Kaohsiung, Taiwan by @piglin | 5yr 5 years ago | 1 comment

Hi folks, before I stayed mostly in Taipei and I want to know how does the southern capital Kaohsiung compare for nomad friendliness. Those of you who were there and especially did some work are welcome to share thoughts.
