Would you like to help revitalize a village in Greece?

in Greece by @lightmotif | 5yr  | 48 comments

Hi all -

Iโ€™ve recently connected with an interesting community group called the Meraki people, based in a village in the Peloponnese of Greece, only 2 hours from Athens and its airport, and 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kalamata and its airportโ€ฆfull of cultural gems, great beaches and wild mountainous landscapes. They are trying to bring new life and economy to their villages, in a self-sustaining, technologically-innovative, and environmentally-positive way. And theyโ€™re interested in hosting digital nomads in a community experience where you could work on your own projects and/or volunteer to help the local communities, depending on your interests and availability. They have received some significant international recognition already.

Iโ€™m trying to work out details around a potential gathering approx mid-Nov to mid-Dec. but also want to gauge interest before getting too far. Cost of lodging should be reasonable/ off-season โ€“ apts or private rooms with heat and hot water, and there would be a co-working space + potential community kitchen. @alldreamedup and @munly_leong expressed interested in Greece this fall - have either of you made plans? Also, @srajan821 and @bradonomics - the Meraki people are trying to do something similar to an eco-village, so wanted to give you a shout too.

Hope to hear from some nomads interested this fall (or in the future). Thanks!

Susan

OK, it looks like the Meraki group in Greece would prefer to discuss details and needs about a nomad gathering in our FaceBook group โ€“ and Iโ€™d really prefer they coordinate things instead of me. Again, just search for Nomads for Sustainability and Social Good and Iโ€™ll add you. If youโ€™re not on FaceBook, you may e-mail Agata Bez at: [email protected] with your needs and interests. Iโ€™ll update this thread when decisions are made. Thanks!

Iโ€™ve asked a woman from the Meraki People group in Greece to take over coordination with nomads, as Iโ€™m unsure if I can make it to Greece in 2016, and would rather someone affiliated directly with the group coordinate this effort to see what peopleโ€™s needs are. Hopefully she will join this thread but if not Iโ€™ll let people know how to contact them.

That still leaves November/ December plans open for me, and I should probably start a new thread, but Iโ€™d still love to see if anyone working on a social/ digital project would like to gather somewhere for mutual inspiration. I have a โ€œcleanwebโ€ project Iโ€™ve been kicking around for a while, would love feedback. Maybe we could choose a city where a Global Climate March will take place end of November โ€“ I was thinking Valencia?

Yes, judging from the number of people who have joined our Nomads for Sustainability and Social Good group on FB this past week (after I posted about it here), I think there is a hunger in the nomad community for more opportunities like this. So again, feel free to join the group and post your own ideas. (Btw, Iโ€™m also open to hosting the group somewhere other than FB but these days itโ€™s hard to know whereโ€ฆ I love the simplicity of this forum and am tempted to request group functionality here, but donโ€™t want to add to Pieterโ€™s already long feature request listโ€ฆ lol)

Hey,

Im currently in Greece, just arrived back here. Im in Corfu as a way in to Albania and have no solid plans after here. โ‚ฌ500 a month is a lot to pay in Greece, I was here earlier this year for 2 months on the islands and stayed in hotels for a little over half thatโ€ฆ But, if there is a group of like like minded people and co working space then I would be interested for sure. What dates are you thinking now?

Hey @nomadic-geek and all โ€“ Iโ€™m happy to take feedback on prices, but Iโ€™m also surprised to hear that 500 Euro per month for a whole apartment is high. What do you think would be standard/ reasonable? Iโ€™m in Croatia off-season and paying 600 (for a beautiful 2 BR, negotiated rate) and we are all paying about that here or more. I did look on AirBnB for this area in Greece and prices were way higher for apts during this timeframe.

Anyway, to recap (I know this is a long thread), Iโ€™m not organizing anything for this fall. Wifi isnโ€™t up to snuff and I have other stress right now (father going into surgery) so I am just letting this go now. Maybe Spring 2016.

Hey @suuzin I actually thought the opposite and think that 500 Euro per month with WiFi included is pretty reasonable. Granted I live in Austin, Texas and would love to be paying that here!

I donโ€™t know โ€“ I think the issue is weโ€™re talking about a group of 20 villages that have been partially abandoned due to Greeceโ€™s economic troubles. Not every country has high population densities to make the cost of laying fiber cables everywhere a reality. Our internet infrastructure is also entangled in our countryโ€™s politics. Go find another connection mate.

Weโ€™ve lived decades of growth, economic and political stability - itโ€™s driven up the cost of living & the rise of a happy affluent society.

I think itโ€™s likely this village will want to continue to host digital nomads next year. But actually the main details are already worked out for this year if anyone wants to come. A group of six apartments for 500 Euro single occupancy/ 600 double for 1 month. I have pictures and the places look very comfortable, 100 meters from the sea. If I can find nomads to take four apts, Iโ€™ll take the fifth, and the sixth has been offered to us for free as a co-working space (they would outfit it with tables/ desks) and community meal space. High-speed wifi. The organic food on offer sounds amazing! And there are tavernas in town too.

Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nemea Games and numerous monasteries as well as a lot of trekking, mountain biking, forest hiking, snorkeling, tai chi lessons, and excellent cultural events. They are trying to roll out the red carpet for us, and Iโ€™ve gotten a tiny bit of interest from some FB groups, but would need more to move forward. So please do chime in if the Nov-Dec timeframe works for you. Thanks!

Driving from Italy to Croatia..how to handle passport?

in Croatia by @ld | 7d 7 days ago | 3 comments

Hello, we are US citizens that have been able to stay in Italy past our standard visa stay due to covid. Now we must leave. We want to drive to Croatia as our โ€œout of EUโ€ stay. But Iโ€™m now wondering what considerations I need to take care of for my visa. I wonโ€™t go through an airport and get my passport stamped. But I assume I need to get my passport stamped as a way to prove Iโ€™m out of the EU.

Anyone else travel in and out of Schengen zone via car? Or know what I should do to properly handle the visa situation? I get unclear answers online. Hmm.

Appreciate your help!

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 12d 11 days ago | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Best/quickest way from Italy to Croatia?

in Croatia by @ld | 14d 13 days ago | 3 comments

Hello,

We are in Umbria until August 31. We've been here since March, but crisis-level visa extensions are over. After that we have to leave the EU. We would like to stay out of the USA (our home) due to it's covid crisis, at the same time we want to be responsible about travel. Ideally we would not travel at all, rather stay hidden in the countryside of Umbria forever until covid is more under control globally, but here we are!

So we must leave the Schengen zone. We should avoid USA. We should avoid long air travel.

We were thinking Croatia.

Do you recommend a route to Croatia? We are open to long train rides. Ideally not long ferry rides. Is there a ferry route under 4 hours? I read about it...I don't see it. If not, the other option is to make our way north and up over to Croatia via train.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and insights!

Thanks.

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Did you learn any Thai before staying in Chiang Mai?

in Chiang Mai, Thailand by @digitaldiva | 18d 18 days ago | 0 comments

Iโ€™m curious to know how many people learned some Thai before going there. Learning languages is a hobby of mine but Iโ€™m very put off by how complex the writing system is, and if I decide not to learn it Iโ€™ll probably cross Chiang Mai off my bucket list. I prefer to be at least conversational in a language before I do an extended stay in a country. Iโ€™m curious how people who learned no Thai did getting by. And Iโ€™m curious, from people who did learn some, if itโ€™s any easier than it seems? Thanks!

Eager to find out what age most start out as a DN? (Me)โ€ฆ 27 and just started out in the last 6 months or so. Not presently 100% location independent, probably more like 90% as still required to visit the office from time to time

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 23d 22 days ago | 39 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Greece- WIFI- how is it really?

in Greece by @amandamay | 1yr 1 year ago | 0 comments

We are leaving for Greece in 60 days and need good wifi for the 3 months we plan on staying there, this is a must! Iโ€™ve heard mixed reviews and the 8-10 ranking on nomadlist are not super encouraging. Has anyone recently worked from there? What should we expect? We plan on renting an apartment after staying in airbnb and would like to work from the place we are staying in. Thanks so much for helping me decide if we can continue on or change plans.

Is November a good time to visit Greece?

in Greece by @jammingsloth | 3yr 2 years ago | 7 comments

Any recommendations on cities/islands in Greece for the month of November? Looking for a place that is not cold, with good food, good internet, nice outdoors, and not in complete isolation.

in Greece by @essence | 4yr 3 years ago | 1 comment

Has anyone done remote work from Lefkada or Kefalonia in Greece? Heard internet is good on Lefkada, thinking of spending some weeks of September there. Also looking for coliving/coworking peepz to get a house with, posted a tread in the coliving section, check it out in interested

Formentera, Spain vs. Santorini, Greece?

in Santorini, Greece by @que | 4yr 4 years ago | 5 comments

Hi,
Iโ€™m ready to start traveling again (looking at May through August, about). I have a little more money to spend and would like an island experience in Southern Europe. Iโ€™m a little older and looking for a little more comfort these days. I would plan to rent a 1 bedroom apartment if possible. Places that come to mind are Formentera or Santorini. Iโ€™d like to stay for 2 or 3 months. Does anyone have any experiences to share with these two locales. One concern I have about Greece is safety given the economic crisis. Any insight into there would be appreciated.

Thanks

From "selfish nomadism" to "supportive nomadism" โ€” Greece, anyone?

in Greece by @alldreamedup | 4yr 4 years ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m still trying to decide where to go between October and Christmas this year. Too many criteria to handle and at this point no absolute priority is emergingโ€ฆ first world problems. So I turned the โ€œproblemโ€ around, instead of thinking selfishly โ€œwhat can this or that place do for me?โ€ I am now thinking โ€œwhat can I do for this or that placeโ€? And soโ€ฆ Greece. I visited Athens & the Peloponnese on holidays last year and found some beautiful spots where I could definitely spend a couple of months, and am now thinking: what if thereโ€™s a few of us who rent a big house with Internet (preferably by the sea, that priority is pretty much always top of the list for me though Iโ€™m flexible) and turn โ€œselfish nomadismโ€ into โ€œsupportive nomadismโ€? I only have a contact in Nafplio for housing, so if you are interested in helping create this and have ideas/suggestions/contacts let me know in a comment! There may be a few practical difficulties, with the current cash shortageโ€ฆ I havenโ€™t studied this in details but hereโ€™s a thought, anyway!
