With 2018 right around the corner, the first thing I am going to do is find a new home base. The single most important factor on which I decided where I want to go was tax advantages. Right now, after reading several posts on this forum, it’s probably going to be Malta. I am from the EU which should make the process pretty easy.

I read a few posts on here which answered a lot of questions, but what I am looking for is mainly confirmation on that what I am planning to do works like I think it will.

1. Is a postal address sufficient for gaining and maintaining residency?
I already know that you are supposed to spend more time in Malta than in any other country to gain tax residency. However I’d rather rent an Airbnb for those months instead of a renting out an apartment for the whole year. Ideally I’d get a post box to have a permanent mailing address. Would that work?

2. What exactly is foreign sourced income?
So as I understood it, you don’t pay taxes on foreign sourced income which is NOT remitted to a Maltese bank account. My main income comes from websites so the income is sourced from E-Commerce stores, none of them in any form related to Malta. I’d still work on this while in Malta, although the income is pretty much passive. I am aware that it’s beneficial to pay at least some tax to avoid complications.

Anybody has experience with Malta “Resident Programme” requirements?
I’m EU national with a UK Ltd, considering taking Malta residence since you pay no personal tax on sources of foreign income there (if you keep your money in non-Maltese banks and rent property in Malta at all times).
Reading the requirements here:

One point is not totally clear to me, on page 12-13 they list the conditions that would make you loose the residence status (point f):
"[if the resident] Stays in any other jurisdiction for more than 183 days in a calendar year.[he/she loses the resident status]"
Does this just mean I can’t stay in any specific country for more than 183 days, or more broadly I can’t stay 183 days outside of Malta?
For example, if I spend 2 months a year in Malta and other 10 months in other countries but not longer than 3 months each, will I still be considered resident of Malta?
Would appreciate any help.

Hey nomads! I just landed in Malta and I’m looking to rent a 1br apartment for a month, ideally close to a gym and supermarket.

Am I best sticking around sliema/st julians? Or st paul’s bay? Or in Valletta itself?

Also, I haven’t had much luck finding monthly rentals on airbnb or through simonmamo or other real estate sites - seems to be really tough finding a place for 1-3 months. Any inside tips on how to rent an apartment for a month here?

I landed yesterday in Saint-Paul’s bay, in Malta, where I have rented a nice flat with a balcony and high speed internet. Looked like a perfect place to work… Except very noisy construction work is being conducted in the building!
Do you have any advice for another place to work from ?
