Has anyone stayed in Nairobi for longer and can share costs/tips?

in Nairobi, Kenya by @alexlielacher |  | 7 comments

I am strongly considering ditching SEA for East Africa this summer. I just doing the cost analysis, but I am not sure how much food, drink and neccessities will be per month in Nairobi (and Kenya in general). Has anyone been lately who could advise?

My cost analysis so far is:
Flight - £350 (from Europe one way)
Visa - £35
Accom - £250 (airbnb)
Co-working space - £110
Gym - no idea?!
Food, drink, entertainment - ???!!!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Coming from a visa exempt EU country can I extend my stay in Thailand for 30 days or not?

in Thailand by @alexlielacher |  | 3 comments

I have just been reading up on the new Thai visa situation and I am very confused as to whether I can extend my ‘visa exempt 30 days stay" by another 30 days at a local immigration office whilst already in Thailand or not? According to the Austrian Foreign ministry website I cannot but then several recently updated travel blogs say you can? And visa runs seem to be more or less out of the question now since the authorities are crackin’ down on that since the Bangkok attacks?

Any EU Europeans had any recent experience with that? Just want to make sure I can avoid trouble.

Introduce yourself — who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 672 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, where’ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but they’re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So let’s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • what’s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you don’t want to
But the more you share… The merrier!

What place in Thailand has fast internet and beautiful nature?

in Thailand by @tomanna |  | 26 comments

Hi all!

I’m trying to work out where I should go in Thailand that offers a combination of strong internet connection with a bit of natural beauty (hills/sea - I don’t really mind).

I’ve been in Bali recently and whilst it is gorgeous it has two main problems for me. First, it doesn’t really support a lifestyle where you walk anywhere - the roads are dangerous and pavements largely non-existant. And, famously, the internet connections here aren’t fabulous, unless you go to a coworking spot.

Can anyone with experience of Thailand please tell me if they can recommend somewhere that’s attractive to be in, well connected, and less-than-lethal for pedestrians?

thanks!

How is Cartagena, Colombia for digital nomads?

in Cartagena, Colombia by @jackie_dischler |  | 8 comments

Hi - I’m looking for a good place to stay for a few weeks, work, have a beach, a bit to see… has anybody been to Cartagena and can say something about cost of living, scene, beach, Wifi (reliable??), safety. Or is somebody there right now? I plan to go in about 4 weeks! Thanks!

What are your Zanzibar recommendations?

by @purplespatula |  | 7 comments

Have any of you worked from Zanzibar? It’s mostly a vacation destination but the Internet is relatively good so we are planning to give working there a try in mid-July. Do you know any hotels, coffee shops or restaurants that might be particularly good for getting work done?

Penang or Kuala Lumpur for three months?

in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @lena |  | 8 comments

Hi!
We are currently planing to go to Malaysia for three months, but are unsure whether Penang or KL is the best fit for us.

Generally, we don’t like big cities (e.g. Bangkok) too much, but we need to get some work done and need good wifi and a place that is easy to settle into. A modern, comfortable and private apartment for less than ±2.500 MR is a requirement. Easy access to nature and good food (vegetarian) is more important than shopping or an active nightlife.

Any tips? Thanks for any help!

Is Kathmandu in Nepal a good place for digital nomads?

in Kathmandu, Nepal by @karim |  | 11 comments

I am thinking to go to Nepal and grow my online business there. I could not find Kathmandu in the nomad list so I hoped someone here could tell about his/her experience in this city or Nepal in general. Pros/cons?

How is Kuala Lumpur as a digital nomad base?

in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by @agirlwhotravels |  | 29 comments

Hi everyone! I’m considering moving to Kuala Lumpur for about a year or so (mainly because it’s a great getaway to SE Asia islands). I was wondering what’s it like as a travel base? It would be great to hear the opinions of those of you who lived there! Thanks so much in advance!
