Have you ever been called to U.S. jury duty while traveling?

by @krompson |  | 7 comments

My husband and I have residency in the state of Tennessee in the USA and my in-laws collect our mail for us there. We only pass through Tennessee about once a year.

Does anyone know what happens if we’re called to jury duty? Is traveling a legit excuse to get out of it?

How do you find an apartment when there's nothing on Airbnb or Craigslist?

by @krompson |  | 5 comments

So far, everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve been able to book an apartment in advance on Craigslist or Airbnb. Sometimes I’ll even reach out on the #nomads Slack group, on Couchsurfing, or contact the owner of a local coworking space to see if anyone knows a landlord in need of a tenant. This works great for larger towns and cities.

I’m beginning to look into living in smaller, more remote towns. Does anyone have advice about showing up in a country without a home and tracking one down?

How would you define "visiting" vs. "living" in a country?

by @krompson |  | 11 comments

CouchSurfing.com profiles have a section where users list countries they’ve visited and countries they’ve lived in–an interesting distinction for a nomad to think about.

Certainly there’s no one right way to define “visiting” and “living,” but how would you define each of these?

How do you deal with the fear of leaving for the first time?

by @eddie |  | 32 comments

Hey everyone!

I’m getting ready for my first trip abroad alone (this Oct). I decided on Chiang Mai because I feel like it might be the best place to get my feet wet. Plus I’ve been planning on going to Thailand now for about 3 years. Dream started 3 years ago, started my business 2 years ago, finished college/moved out of my parents 1 year ago, left my part-time crutch job a few months ago and now I make enough online to be location independent.

But now that my dream is becoming a reality, I’m actually kinda scared. Just thinking about boarding a plane with only a backpack in my possession is liberating but also frightening. Probably the craziest thing I’ve done in my life and I’ve worked so hard to get to this point.

I’m sure that most people here had to deal with the fear of leaving for the first time, the uncertainty of what will happen, and maybe even some resistance from your family. I’m just wondering how you dealt with it? Maybe I just need to re-read some of the books (4 hour workweek, vagabonding, The $100 startup, etc…) that gave me the motivation and courage to start in the first place. What motivates you to keep going?

Thanks!

Where's home? Where do you return to?

by @magalhini |  | 10 comments

Hi there!

I’m sorry if this question has been asked before, whether in disguise or directly, but I couldn’t find its own dedicated topic and I find it very interesting to talk about.

One of my issues with the remote working world is the lack of knowledge of where to return to. After a one/two/ten month stint living and working somewhere else (say Airbnb’ing or a short let, meaning a place that is NOT yours by any means), where do you return to?

  • Do most nomads own a place that you rent while you travel?
  • If not, is this something that you consider doing?
  • Do you return to your home country before deciding where to go next? Or do you jump directly somewhere new?
  • And when you return, do you find the need to be in a personal, private space? (ie, not sharing with strangers 24/7 365 days a year)

Speaking for myself, I’ve gotten rid of my apartment in Portugal 2 years ago and moved to London simply for the pursuit of new and interesting opportunities. I’m now, at last, working remotely and I plan on working and living for a few weeks/months in random European cities, but not knowing where to return after to after this… is killing me! (I still own too many possessions to carry in a backpack. Not too many, but moving is a hassle).

  • Those of you who travel without a set of keys on you, how do you deal with this thought? I’m really curious to get to know your views on this.

Thanks in advance. This forum has helped me a lot convincing me that this is a leap I need to make sooner or later  cheers!

How can I have one telephone number while traveling?

by @swechris |  | 11 comments

Hi!
I found this perfect solution https://www.didlogic.com/ that will forward phone calls to whatever SIM card you currently are using and really cheap too. But… Really horrible reviews http://www.oregonherald.com/bnews/story.htm?id=1113.

What do you guys say?

How do you network and connect with others on your travels?

by @evamamartin |  | 4 comments

Just wondering what your favourite tips for connecting with like-minded people are, particularly when you’re only in one location for a few weeks / months, and don’t speak the local lingo.

Costa Rica or other suggestions in SA for a single woman travelling?

in Costa Rica by @ruthk |  | 14 comments

Hi guys,
I’ve decided I want to take a break from my way of living and go nomad for a few months (at least). I do music so WiFi is not my main concern, all I need is good inspiration and nice people around me.

I am looking for a mid-cheap / safe place, preferably having a nice beach around. I’d also like to socialize with people from different cultures. Meet and make new friends.
I got sick from living in Europe/US, so I’d rather be far away from these continents.

My choices have come down do Costa Rica, but I’m reading some good stuff about Medellin, Mexico, Panama. I’ve spend quite some time in Asia traveling as well (I love Bali and Koh Lanta), but I’ve never been to South America, so I’d rather go in that direction.

What would you suggest?
