What's the best noise-canceling microphone for remote VOIP calls?

by @mikevallano |  | 16 comments

Being nomadic comes with its fair share of background noise (roosters, motorcycles, speakers on trucks announcing today’s fruit specials, celebratory explosions, etc.).

While lots of fun, it can be distracting during client calls, which I typically hold via Google Voice or Skype just using my macbook’s built-in microphone.

I don’t want to carry an extra headset, especially if it’s over-the-ear and looks like I’m working at a call center.

It’d be really nice to have quality earbuds that also have a decent mic built in, but I have yet to find anything that fits the bill.

Does anyone have a good earbud/microphone solution?

Where are the nomad hot spots in Central and South America?

by @jb510 |  | 106 comments

The last few years I’ve spent mostly in Asia (Thailand/Indonesia) and Europe (Spain/Italy), but I run a company in the US and need to coordinate with 10 US based employees and business partners. The time zone issues between EU/US and SEA/US are exhausting even if I love the locales.

I’d really like to try romping around the Americas for a while, but I’ve never been south of Baja California and really can’t find much positive having been said about remotely working from CA/SA as a DN.

I know some hippy, surfer, artist, musician, yoga teacher types calling various locals home, but no one making a living online… more than a few people have told me it’s fabulous down there until you go to Thailand/Bali and then you wonder why all those ExPats are suffering in CA/SA. Of course you only really know when you go yourself.

I’d love to see nomadlist.io get filled out with more details on Central and South American cities. It seems really sparse coverage at the moment, but maybe that’s simply because it’s not good and no one stays there for long.

How do you receive physical mail as a digital nomad?

by @danielgenser |  | 81 comments

Does anyone have recommendations to handle physical mail? In the USA, I’ve noticed various services over the years where you get a physical address that you can change your address to, they receive your mail, scan stuff and send you PDF’s.

Has anyone used these types of services? Impressions?

Do you travel with a laptop stand?

by @danielgenser |  | 38 comments

Now that I’ve been working for a few days without my Cinema Display (just sold it!), I’m definitely considering getting a travel stand for my 13" Macbook Pro. Do any of you travel with one? Any recommendations?

I'll be entering the UK for 6 months, will immigration ask to see my finances?

by @shayna |  | 24 comments

Hi!

I (American) and my husband (Brazilian) are going to London for 6 months.

He’s going to study English - he’s already registered & paid for the course.

I’m going to be a tourist… and work on my online business.

I’ve heard UK border control can be a bit difficult and am wondering if they are likely to ask for financial evidence that we can support ourselves for six months.

I have savings in the bank, but of course I’ll also be receiving regular, stable income from the online business (I could show them a history of payments stretching back a year or more, if necessary).

Any thoughts/tips?

Thanks in advance!

How can I own a car if I'm not a resident somewhere?

by @nevergoingback |  | 15 comments

Hi peeps,

Here is me with a serious question again!

I travel the world alot but always go back to my home country for a couple of months each year. In this period I want to own a car. But because I do not live anywhere it is very difficult to own a car. I cant put the car I want on my parents name because of their salary and the Netherlands being very strict on that.

What options do I have to owning a car?
I know things should be possible just like afrojack who had a car with german license plates!!

Any advice on this?

What do you do with presents?

by @bydorian |  | 6 comments

So there are many occasion people give gifts, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Birthdays, … etc.

For instance:

  • Food: you can use it pretty quickly
  • Flowers: doesn’t last too long
  • Perfume: take a lot of space for a month or two
  • Clothes: what if you don’t life them? (eg: a t-shirt, a scarf, …)
  • Random stuff: as part of the nomadic life, we want to be minimalist and can’t keep too much stuff

I would say there is short-term, middle-term and long-term goods. And useful / useless / special goods.

So we have a problem, we don’t have infinite storage space (either out of the bag in containers or inside bags).

Attacking the source of the problem:

  1. Asking people to give mostly short-term goods, useful middle-term/long-term goods (eg: from a wishlist for instance)
  2. Asking for no physical gifts
  3. Not going / celebrating those occasions
  4. Something else?

I think it’s pretty hard to prevent people from giving unwanted gifts (rejecting a gift is an huge cultural mistake).

Attacking the effects of the problem:

  1. Giving gifts to somebody else
  2. Re-selling gifts
  3. Taking a photo of it and throwing it away
  4. Shipping them to some stockage container company
  5. Something else?

I personally think that’s one of the biggest thing against minimalism, and ultimately against the freedom of moving quickly.

So, what you you do?

Have any of you left a pet behind?

by @danielgenser |  | 25 comments

Tough question to ask. Have any of you had to leave a pet behind? My wife and I have a cat that we’ve had probably for 7 years now. We don’t have anyone we can just leave her with. We’ve thought about finding someone to adopt her in the past, but now with our DN plans, we’ve put her up for adoption through our local rescue organization. I’ve been fearing what will happen if no one adopts her. Have any of you been in a similar situation?
