Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo |  | 667 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio |  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

Iโ€™m a U.S. accountant who works with Americans who live abroad, ask me anything!

by @olwagner |  | 100 comments

Hi everyone,

If you have a U.S. tax question or would like some U.S. tax insight on your business/structure, ask away!

I have been preparing tax returns for US citizens abroad since 2012. I can answer any question in US tax with an international flavor. I operate 1040abroad.com and I have maintained a blog at taxsamurai.com

I look forward to answering all your questions. And if you are in Ho Chi Minh City in December, letโ€™s meet !!!

How are you earning a living while traveling?

by @mattlock |  | 22 comments

Iโ€™ve been traveling for over a year, and Iโ€™ve been working on 3 month contracts in locations abroad to sustain travel. I wanted to see what the community was like as far as digital nomads go. Are you trading your skills for $$$? and if so, how are you doing it?

(Iโ€™ve also wanted to try this, but havenโ€™t been to successful.)

What do you think I should do with Nomad List?

by @levelsio |  | 57 comments

Nomad List has passed 200,000 monthly users this month, after being launched just a few months ago.

Since the launch Iโ€™ve worked hard to make the site better. But apart from improving the list itself, Iโ€™ve expanded by organizing meetups for nomads everywhere, launching a chat group, a forum w/ AMA with remote startups, a job board with remote jobs , and a blog with interviews with famous nomads.

I have a few more plans written down, but Iโ€™m mostly interested in your ideas where I should steer this ship, and also any feedback on what Iโ€™ve been doing right, and more interestingly: wrong.

What did you wish you knew earlier?

by @refuseillusion |  | 18 comments

What took you longer to figure out than you thought?

Iโ€™ll become a nomad soon and I want to know what you learned after spending time on the road. Feel free to repeat tips that have been told already in order to increase their significance.

(Obviously donโ€™t talk about things that you got right away and that are mentioned in every blog post)

Hi! We're Hacker Paradise, a traveling community of creatives. AUA!

by @alexeymk |  | 11 comments

Hi! Weโ€™re Hacker Paradise, a traveling community of developers, designers, and other creative types. It was started by us two, Alexey and Casey.

Hereโ€™s the short pitch we give from our website:

Travel the world, get work done, grow personally & professionally, and be part of a tight-knit community of passionate and intellectually curious people.

You bring yourself, a project to work on, and a positive attitude.

We facilitate a tight-knit, creative community, organize a curated list of awesome places to visit, and provide a high-productivity workspace.

Last year we did Costa Rica, this year weโ€™ve done SE Asia (Thailand, Bali and Vietnam) and this Monday weโ€™re launching our first Europe trip, landing in Tallinn, Estonia.

Iโ€™m happy to answer questions about anything Hacker Paradise related - how and whywe got started, what the trips are like, the business side of things, and which one of us has a cheesier sense of humor (hint: itโ€™s Casey).

Would anyone be interested in an accounting app for nomads?

by @andrewkent |  | 16 comments

Taxes and accounting are a huge pain in the ass for me. Iโ€™m currently using a mix of quickbooks, google drive/dropbox, google sheets, and the ScanPro app. Getting all these things to integrate is just a headache.

I would like an accounting app that works for nomads. Would anyone else be interested in something like this? Or, does anyone know of any good accounting apps for nomad types out there?

Some of the features I want:

  • Connect to a bank account to load transactions and classify them (just like quickbooks)

  • Digitize receipts/docs. I canโ€™t haul a bunch documents around, so I want to be able to snap a picture of a receipt/document using a smartphone AND link it to a specific entry in my linked bank transactions. Why the hell does Quickbooks not have this feature?

  • Find tax deductions that nomads can typically claim. Quickbooks does deductions like home office, but nomads donโ€™t have home offices. Would like an app that finds deductions for the perpetual nomad (e.g., certain situations where housing is deductible while youโ€™re abroad, some travel expenses, etc.)

Any other features that people would like?

If no one knows of anything out there (Iโ€™ve googled my brains out, so any suggestions are welcome), please let me know.

So I know itโ€™s an idea that we all have, and judging from the response on this forum, this is the perfect place to get the wheels moving for something like this. So far @atu and I have been discussing how to make a network of nomadic shelters a reality, where anyone in the community can come and live and work from a cool, internet-rich apartment in great cities around the world (with no longterm commitments!). Our thought for a minimum viable product was to simply find a place on airbnb and try to get a group together to live in it. So here I am, starting the hunt for the first candidates in the NOMAD HOME EXPERIMENT: Austin Edition!!

The house I found is awesome!

https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/4369354?checkin=01%2F06%2F2015&checkout=02%2F06%2F2015&guests=5&s=vXbm

The place looks perfect, and it has 5 beds, so at $4574 for the month, it would be fairly cheap per person ($914).

So, LET THE RECRUITING BEGIN! Iโ€™m looking for 4 digital nomads who will be in Austin from Jan 6th - Feb 6th, to join in on this experiment, and be the first group to experience the power of a nomadic living arrangement!! The idea is, that we all have our own skills to contribute, and the group is encouraged to motivated each other, hold each other accountable for their goals, create an inspiring environment, work together and document all of the activity from the houses members to be shared here, and on other digital nomadic forums. I think the opportunity to bring like minded nomads together, while solving a housing problem all digital nomads face is monumental!!

For the first month, you could live and work from the Nomad Home Austin, and choose if you want to stay months after. If someone leaves, I will post on here opens, and we will bring in new members. @levelsio has been working on a social network that would bring together people looking for this sort of arrangement, so Iโ€™m trying to be the first property where people can get off this forum and into the world!

Join me in Austin, whether you already are there, or want to help to make this dream a reality, canโ€™t wait to see who fills up the very first first nomad home!
