Quaint small towns/villages in Italy and/or France

in Italy by @theunisk |  | 13 comments

Any recommendations for a few weeks stay in a small, quiet town or village somewhere in Italy/France during summer ? Open to any setting, by the seaside, in the mountains or the countryside - Iโ€™d like to get a feel for local life (outside the cities) in a charming place.
Having hiking routes available nearby would be a bonus, but not required.
Internet speed will not be very important, so that does not need to be taken into consideration.
Iโ€™ll likely be doing both Italy and France, so suggestions for both would be great.

Entering Nicaragua with a one way ticket

in Nicaragua by @theunisk |  | 2 comments

Does anyone have experiencing entering Nicaragua by plane with a one way ticket ? Specifically, I intend to book a ticket via Spirit. I am aware it is mostly airlines that check for onward travel. Does anyone have experience with this ? Flyonward seems to have been getting bad reviews lately. Would a bus ticket to a neighbouring country be enough to convince Spirit ?

European bank account for non resident

by @theunisk |  | 5 comments

I hold South African/Portuguese dual citizenship, however I was born and (officially) reside in South Africa. Any recommendations for a nomad friendly european bank account ? Ie, one that does not require residency, proof of address, or have easy ways to get around these.
I will not be using it much for day to day expenses, more as a way to hold euros and be able to transfer between accounts. My US bank account has very high fees.
I am in europe for the next week or two (currently Italy) and hope to be able to get one before I leave.

What items/services etc did you wish you had the first time you set off to travel?

by @theunisk |  | 3 comments

A friend of mine is setting off on her first long solo trip, starting in Brazil. She will initially be backpacking but may turn to working on the road at some point.

Iโ€™d like to get her a nice gift for the trip and though I have a few ideas, I thought Iโ€™d come here for some further inspiration. What have you found yourself missing on the road, or what item or service has made your travels better/more comfortable/enjoyable ?
An example from my experience: a way to organise laundry, eg packing cubes or dry bags.

What are the best UK bank accounts for non UK residents?

by @theunisk |  | 6 comments

Iโ€™m in the UK at the moment and will be here from time to time over the coming year. Iโ€™d like to setup a bank account for use in europe & to make funding my revolut card easier. Does anyone know which banks accept non UK residents? I do have a european passport/ID, though I am technically a resident of south africa. Proof of address might also be a sticky point - I have an address which I can use but have no proof that I โ€˜liveโ€™ there (besides my revolut card).

Another nice to have would be bitcoin friendly (eg Iโ€™ve read about barclays accounts being closed due to being used in connection with bitcoin, not sure whether that is a general thing).

How is Istanbul for digital nomads?

in Istanbul, Turkey by @theunisk |  | 13 comments

Iโ€™m soon heading out on my first solo international trip as a remote worker.
Iโ€™m thinking of starting in Istanbul mid June, and slowly making my way up
north, staying a month or so in cities along the way.

Have any of you stayed in Istanbul for a couple of weeks or longer? Anyone there now?
For accommodation there seems to be some options on airbnb.

  • Which areas are good and which are best avoided?
  • Are there any useful local sites?
  • Would it be worth booking a place for a couple of nights and trying to find a good deal on the ground?
  • What would a good rate be for a room or small apartment for a one month stay?

A lot of questions here, Iโ€™d appreciate any bits of advice you can share!

What's a great quiet village in central or Eastern Europe to stay?

by @theunisk |  | 12 comments

Iโ€™ve been travelling through some major cities in eastern europe and now Iโ€™m looking to get somewhere a bit more quiet where I can settle for a few weeks, focus and get some work done.
I really enjoy nature and hiking, so it would be great if those come as part of the package.
It would be nice if there are some english speaking people around to meet, but you canโ€™t have everything.

I plan on making my way down the croatian coast (starting from slovenia) at some point in the next couple of months, though right now I imagine itโ€™s extremely busy and relatively expensive. Or are there any spots that could be worth checking out now?
Iโ€™m considering Kotor too.

Thanks in advance

Best quality/price backpack easily acquirable in europe?

by @theunisk |  | 11 comments

Iโ€™m currently travelling through europe and my two-bag setup is a chore. Can any of you recommend top loading backpacks that Iโ€™d be able to find in a store, or that has reasonably quick delivery time (within a week)?
Iโ€™d love to get a tortuga, but they donโ€™t ship to where Iโ€™m from.

I might settle down somewhere for a bit longer in which case I could probably order anything, but Iโ€™d love to ditch my old backpack asap so any suggestions would be appreciated!

For a 30 day multiple entry visa, can your return flight be after 30 days?

by @theunisk |  | 3 comments

I am heading to Istanbul soonโ€ฆ I have a multiple entry visa valid for a 30 day stay within a 180 day period. I intend to spend a week or so in Istanbul and then travel onward, eventually returning to Istanbul in October for my return flight. So I will not be there for longer than 30 days - but I donโ€™t yet have any proof of an onward journey as I would prefer to keep my plans flexible. Could this cause any trouble?

Which are the best cities in Europe for digital nomads?

by @theunisk |  | 9 comments

My rough and likely to change itinerary is Istanbul, Split, Budapest, Prague - for about a month each, doing a couple short weekend trips to other cities/sites along the way.

Some background:
This will be my first solo international trip is a remote worker.
Iโ€™d love to get a taste for the culture of the cities I visit, meet some fellow travellers and nomads along the way, explore nature / hike (and of course, get work done).

Would be great to hear what some of you would do (or have done), and why?

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 |  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Dubrovnik vs. Mostar: Which Would You Pick for a Two-Month Stay?

in Mostar, Bosnia by @gigigriffis |  | 18 comments

Hey guys!

Doing some travel planning for when my boyfriend and I have to be out of the Schengen in the spring. Iโ€™m looking at Dubrovnik and Mostar. Weโ€™ll probably get to both of them, but was wondering - for those who have been - which one would you recommend basing in longer-term?

Some context on us: we love food and the outdoors. Both of us are cyclists (and should have folding bikes with us by then) and enjoy hiking/walking. Great views are a must. And neither of us are bar or party people, so the night scene isnโ€™t a factor for us. Quiet places are great and I love small towns.

Keep in mind that this will be March/April/maybe May next year, so not high tourist season. I donโ€™t mind if things are generally bustling, but I hate super crowded touristy spots (for example: I love Rome in winter and hate it in summer).

If anyone has insight, would love to hear it!

Best ways to get travel/nomad companions in different locations?

by @madelineb |  | 24 comments

Hi,
Do nomads like to travel together? I mean, not in each otherโ€™s pockets, but look for accomodation together, meet with each other daily or regularly, help out in new cities, motivate/inspire each other in the business? Iโ€™ve done nomad lifestyle in the past in 2009/2014 and this time I want to collaborate and support with other people, each on their own mission. I love this nomad endeavour but to be honest I admit it can be quite time-consuming and lonely.
*Message on NomadList locations?
*Message on Couchsurfing groups? (without sounding like Tinder!)
*Message on other??
Iโ€™m currently in Portugal and heading back to Estonia for January/February (Iโ€™m from Australia). Later in 2017 I am open to places, though Iโ€™m not keen on high pollution, high humidity, high cost cities.
Feedback, interest or ideas welcome!
Thanks, :sunny: Madeline

Non US residents, can you share your testimonial about your US business bank account?

by @nouk |  | 4 comments

I am looking for testimonials of non US resident nomads who incorporated their company in the US & have a business bank account at a US bank.
I would like to know if the process has been difficult if you have been denied a business bank account because of your status as a non resident alien. If you were successful i would like to know if you are able to do everything that a US resident could do with the business bank account. For instance, i would like to know if you are able to do international wire transfers to the country where you reside.

Any nomads in Europe want to do a Nomad Christmas gathering somewhere?

by @wanderingdev |  | 16 comments

Hi Nomads!

Like many, Iโ€™m not heading back to be with my family for the holidays but I was thinking it would be fun to maybe do a nomad family gathering. We could rent a cool house/apartment somewhere fun and do our own thing. I personally am available from 23-27 December, but people could arrive/leave sooner/later. I love to cook so Iโ€™d be up for doing a big christmas dinner.

If anyone is interested, or has suggestions on a good place to go, chime in!

Any nomads travelling south in South America?

by @christabeiia |  | 9 comments

Hola everyone from Colombia! I have recently landed in South America and am planning on making my way south from here over the next six months. I expect to only relocate on the weekends so I can keep my 9-5 wifi schedule, but other than that I have no real plans for destinations or timelines. Iโ€™d would like to meet other digital nomads to team up withโ€” Anyone on or beginning a similar path in this region?

Worth waiting until getting to Asia to buy gadgets?

Transfer Money from US Bank to Thai Bank

by @MsAlissa_J |  | 13 comments

Hello! I forgot the pin number to my Wells Fargo ATM card and I canโ€™t withdraw funds. Iโ€™ve tried to initiate a Wire but was told the account has to be active for 180 days.

MoneyGram and Western Union wonโ€™t allow me to transfer money to myself outside of the United States.

Paypal isnโ€™t allowing me to add $ from my linked WF account, because I didnโ€™t create a traveler profile before leaving. So itโ€™s blocked!

Unfortunately, nothing seems to be working and itโ€™s been 5 days. Do you guys have any immediate suggestions?

I would like to hurry up and pay my rent before Friday. Is Transferwise ok? Iโ€™ve heard mixed review.

Thanks

What are the best places to go if you want great hiking on your doorstep?

by @ani_goes_tweet |  | 29 comments

Where have other nomads gone where theyโ€™ve had loads of great trails on their doorstep?

France is absolutely brilliant for this (great way-marking, maps, and incredible terrain), and Britain is quite good too (but thatโ€™s home), I know Spain for all of its tributaries to the grand El Camino (but what about other trails? how well are they marked?) and Iโ€™m hoping there will be lots of trails that are easy to get to from Las Palmas this winterโ€ฆ

I donโ€™t know much about hiking in other countries in Europe, and beyond Europe I am completely ignorant.

Iโ€™d love to find out about other peopleโ€™s hiking heavensโ€ฆ

I am doing research into what skills are good for getting work anywhere as you travel - other than working on line. So like craftsmen, a hairdresserโ€ฆ people using skills that are not available locally and so having them as a traveller is an advantage to getting work in the places your are planning on visiting. So, any one working their way around the world and not working on your laptop?

Whatโ€™s your approach/resources for finding medium term accommodation (Iโ€™m thinking 1 month-3 months as that tends to be the visa limit)?

by @mininaim |  | 11 comments

Iโ€™m a Nomad UI Developer, living in a small city in the East of #Morocco, here are my expenses PER DAY,

  • Sleeping: (5$)
  • Breakfast (from 1$ to 3$)
  • Public transport: bus, taxi โ€ฆ (8$ to 10$) (Iโ€™m thinking of buying a bike)
  • Lunch (~ up to 6$)
  • Coffee: 3 to 5 cups from local places (to done my work) (5$)
  • Wifi: FREE

In general, it costs me about ~ 30$ per day, to live as a digital nomad.

What are some tips for traveling with guitar/musical instrument?

by @andrewkent |  | 4 comments

I play guitar and practice almost every day. Iโ€™ve been sedentary for a little less than a year, so I havenโ€™t had to lug it around, but Iโ€™m hitting the road again soon.

Does anyone have any experience traveling with a guitar and/or other musical instrument? Any tips on preventing damage from airline luggage crews? Any extra precautions you take? Do you buy travel insurance for your instrument?

My guitar retails at over $1000, and Iโ€™ve added a nice pickup (~$200), so Iโ€™m thinking I might buy a cheaper guitar with a good hard case and travel with it instead.
