Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is gaining popularity with remote workers for its beaches, amazing weather, high-speed internet and growing digital nomad community. We talked with Nacho Rodríguez, the founder of CoworkingC in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria about the Canary Islands and his new endeavour Nomad City – a five-day event for digital nomads that will be happening on 5th-9th December 2016.
Can you tell us more about Nomad City?
Nomad City is a 5 day event that’s designed for networking, learning and simply sharing a good time with a group of like-minded entrepreneurs while getting to know one of Europe’s digital nomad hotspots. We expect over 150 digital nomads from over 25 countries to join us in December!

How did you come up with the idea for Nomad City?
Last year, we organized some informal meetups and a fun farewell party before the departure of Nomad Cruise. It was a great success! So we suggested to our friends at Nomad Cruise to organize even more activities before the departure of the next cruise and also open up the event to all nomads who are already in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and everyone who is interested into the digital nomad lifestyle. Everyone liked the idea and was happy to support us – that’s how the idea for Nomad City was born.
What can nomads look forward to at Nomad City?
Nomad City is a fantastic opportunity to network with many other digital nomads from all over the world while experiencing what makes the island of Gran Canaria a remote work paradise. We’re sure you will love the outdoor experiences and the talks we’ve organized as well as have fun at the networking events while discovering the city.

Why do you think Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a great destination for digital nomads and for an event like Nomad City?
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has great temperatures all year round and it’s super easy and affordable to get here from anywhere in Europe and also cheap to live. Most people don’t know that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a population close to 400,000 and that we have one of the best urban beaches in the world. The city is vibrant, there is always something to do. The connectivity is amazingly fast considering that we are an archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and we have many coworking spaces with great communities. Every year the amount of nomads is increasing and many nomads stay for more than 3 months. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also a great place to set a base and discover the rest of the islands, which is something we encourage all our visitors to do.

In future, do you think more cities will promote themselves as attractive digital nomad destinations?
Definitely. We actually wonder why so few destinations are doing it. We believe that digital nomads can really help to promote destinations and bring positive change to regions by turning them into tech hubs, generating a valuable knowledge exchange with local entrepreneurs and providing new opportunities. So we’re excited to see more cities doing the same in the future!
