Can I enter Thailand on a tourist visa and obtain an education visa there?

in Thailand by @hydrofog | 5yr  | 7 comments

As an American Citizen, would it be safe to fly into Thailand without a visa? You can get a 30 day upon entry right?

The reason I ask is, Iโ€™m in the process of getting my passport. Iโ€™d like to leave basically as soon as my passport arrives in the mail. Iโ€™m unable to apply for a Thai Visa until I have my passport, so that would require an even longer wait.

Would I be able to fly into Thailand with no visa, then get a 30 day entry, then apply for an education visa while inside the country? Once I go, Iโ€™d like to not have to return to the US. I donโ€™t mind if I have to take a bus/flight to a neighboring country for however long if I must leave while I wait for an education visa.

Hi, I have the same question. But I understood the visa rules have changed since May 2015.

Does anyone know if the same rules still apply?

No, you will need to apply for the education visa in another country. And yes you do not need a tourist visa - you can get a stamp when you fly in.

You will however need a lot of paperwork for the visa from the school. So my suggestion is to fly in to Thailand on normal 30 day stamp and find a good school that suits your needs. Once you enrol at the school and they will prepare all the required paperwork for you.

Once you have the paperwork you go to a place like Vientiane, submit your visa papers in the morning and collect your visa the following afternoon.

Awesome reply! Great information. Thanks so much :).

I didnโ€™t realize you could get the visa so quick. I heard somewhere that it takes 4-6 weeks to process the visa. So it is just an overnight thing basically?

Yes, in Vientiane you submit in the morning and collect the following afternoon. Other embassies may be different, but the school should be able to advise you as they are very current with the latest information.

If I remember correctly it did take the school a week or so to prepare the paperwork, but the entire process certainly does not take anything like 4 - 6 weeks.

I must also add that I did this a year ago, so a few things may have changed in the meantime.

Thank you so much for all your help, I appreciate it so much.

So I should probably look for schools the day after I get there?

Is there any type of punishment for missing classes? I want to attend as many as possible, as Iโ€™d really like to learn Thai, but you know sometimes work can be overwhelming and things like that.

You can start doing your research for schools online before you arrive. Where in Thailand do you plan to live?

As for punishment - that will depend on the school. Some schools are more strict about attendance than others.

I have also heard that immigration have started โ€œtestingโ€ students more often to check whether they are actually learning the language, and not just getting the visa to stay long in Thailand.

So be prepared to answer a few questions in Thai when you go visit immigration every 3 months to extend the visa.

Awesome! I donโ€™t mind being put on the spot and asked questions, as I will actually be learning the language. Iโ€™m going to start researching some schools right now.

Thanks for all the help man I greatly appreciate it :).

How to get SMS verifications for banks while traveling?

by @jackgopack | 16h 15 hours ago | 38 comments

Any suggestions for seamlessly receiving SMS Verifications from US financial institutions and other sites while traveling internationally continuously? Wonโ€™t keep my US Verizon account due to cost and currently plan to use local sims at each destination (T-Mobile and Project Fi are NOT an option as they terminate for continuous roaming). In summation, I wonโ€™t have a US mobile account.

Unless Iโ€™m missing something, which is very possible, this appears to be the single most complex issue Iโ€™ve encountered in my preparations, and one that no one addresses. I would greatly appreciate any possible solution that works 100% of the time. Canโ€™t afford surprises in this regard. Many Thanks! Jack.

Introduce yourself โ€” who are you, where are you and what do you do?

by @coffeeshopceo | 1d 1 day ago | 670 comments

tl;dr: introduce yourself in this thread.

We must all get sick of the same backpacker travel questions when we meet new friends, I know I do.

You know the ones - where are you from, whereโ€™ve you been, where are you going, what do you do, how long have you been doing it - etc.

The novelty of answering these questions wears off after maybe a week, but theyโ€™re nonetheless insightful and no matter how much we hate them, we find ourselves asking others.

So letโ€™s bring the dreaded backpacker questionnaire to NomadForum and introduce ourselves shall we?

**

  • whatโ€™s your name?
  • where are you from?
  • how long have you been away from home?
  • what do you do?
  • where are you currently?
  • where are you going?
  • what has been memorable for you so far?
  • will you go home anytime soon?
  • what have you learnt during your time as a nomad?
  • [insert your own question here]

**

No need to answer them all if you donโ€™t want to
But the more you shareโ€ฆ The merrier!

Best Place in South East Asia to stay for 6 months+ (Tax purposes)

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager | 2d 1 day ago | 0 comments

We're looking for a country in south east asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

Anyone wants to learn to sail in the Mediterranean? (Sep or Oct)

by @viktor | 5d 4 days ago | 1 comment

I'm thinking about taking a sailing (yachting) course in the Mediterranean Sea this coming September or October. Thus far from my research, it seems that most courses are held in locations with not many digital nomads. My thinking is that it would be more fun to go to a place with like-minded people. Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in taking a sailing course in the Mediterranean this fall? If not, do you know a location that offers good sailing courses, where there is also many digital nomads / nomad infrastructure?

Where do you work from in Lisbon? ๐Ÿงณโ˜•

Hi everyone,

I am going to move to Lisbon in July and I was wondering where you guys work from? Do you have any recommendations for working on a budget? Any good cafรจs or cheap coworking spaces?

I did some research and found some coworking spaces for > ~ 100โ‚ฌ p. month which is pretty reasonable but too much for me right now.

Thanks!

Bali to focus on attracting remote workers when the island reopens for tourism

by @levelsio | 18d 18 days ago | 0 comments

When reopening for tourism, Bali says it will focus on attracting remote workers to choose the island as their workplace:

"We will focus on a new pattern of how Bali is not just for leisure, but indeed to work in Bali as well"

How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov | 24d 24 days ago | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

Hey Community, Did you ever come across any YouTube videos that sold the freelancing gig to you? That taught you how to freelance? Where to start? The good and bad points of freelancing? or just follow any YouTubers that specialise in freelancing (for inspiration)?

I'd be interested in learning more...

Thanks in advance.

How does Ireland tourist visa length and recurrence work?

in Ireland by @nrgetik | 2mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

Iโ€™m planning a stint in Ireland and Iโ€™m wondering about the 90-day tourist visa. Official information just mentions the 90-day limit without elaboration. Is it akin to Schengen where itโ€™s counted against the most recent 180-day period? Iโ€™m asking because I might like to take trips to the continent flying out of Dublin, but I donโ€™t know how I should account for the days Iโ€™m gone if I do that. Do I stop the 90-day clock for Ireland while Iโ€™m away, or should I make sure Iโ€™m gone from Ireland <= 90 days after my initial arrival date, regardless of where else I go during that interval, just to be safe? What have others done?

What have been your biggest challenges working remotely in your team?

by @wanderer | 3mo 2 months ago | 2 comments

My interest in DN lifestyle started when half of our company have been taking 1 month for remote work @ Ko Samui. It was truly cool but we observed quite some communication challenges. Communication seemed just โ€œriskierโ€ when online.

What were your worst situations caused by misunderstanding while communicating online with your teammates? What do you do to avoid misunderstandings?
