Can I make work calls from Saigon via VOIP?

by @ericvan 8yr  | 14 comments

I do client work, and am wondering if Internet reliability is a factor for making the regular VoIP calls expect to do? I donโ€™t mind paying for good VoIP (prefer skype). In the US, I got vonage and found it not so reliable, as the โ€œquality of serviceโ€ โ€ฆa metric that is not important for regular Internet useโ€ฆwas a problem. Anyone have experience on this issue?

I worked out of Saigon for a total of 6 months on VoIP. Most hotels have fiber optics 50 down / 50 up. Quality of VoIP calls depends on your distance from the Wifi Router. More than one room away and you are going to have a bad time. Hard wire is the best way to go. VoIP works fine over 3G. Even when I got throttled at .25 up/ .25 down. VoIP worked fine on RingCentral/Skype/Google Hangouts.

Hi @Wayland_Chin
Yea the key is 1. be hardwired 2. good โ€œquality of servicesโ€ which is mostly to do with ping time speed.

Without #1, #2 is often a problem, even with a fast network. IN the USA Iโ€™ve had problemโ€™s with very fast connections purely because they have lousy ping times/quality of service.

Sounds like everyone agrees itโ€™s works well in HCMC if you set up right.

Hey @taxico. I almost had a deal with Dreamplex stay to 9PM, but they changed their minds. As with many co-wording places around the world, non standard biz hours are not their thing.

Dreamplex has studios and office spaces that are 24/7, but thatโ€™s no for individuals.

i had a tour of Dreamplex - I recall they had a 24 hour access optionโ€ฆ or was that only for the โ€œprivateโ€ offices?

in any case, it proved to be too expensive for my needs. i rented working space from my apartmentโ€™s management office for about $100/head/month.

Hi Eric,

I worked in Saigon as a programmer for the last 4 months. Internet is generally good, and 3G serves as a fine backup. Most cafes have enough bandwith for voice calls over Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime. I must say that FaceTime consistently outperforms the other two in terms of quality and connectivity.

The better workplaces (Work Saigon and Dreamplex) usually also have a good enough connection for uninterrupted video, where again, FaceTime was consistently better than Skype, Hangouts or Appear.in.

I practically never had problems with audio over 3G.

There are stories about โ€œthe sharks biting the cableโ€ every once in a year, slowing down all internet down to a halt for a week, but I havenโ€™t experienced that fortunately.

@ekbburner Iโ€™ll be working out of Dreamplex. Hope to meet you! I have to find somewhere for 9PM and later and that will be a high quality apt connection.

Hi Eric, I worked out of ho chi minh (saigon) for 3 weeks or so last year and had no internet issues. Internet was stable and good. I am in sales so I make calls and do presentations, internet quality is very important. I kept two backups via mobile but used my hotel internet. Even cafes are quite good in HCM. If it helps, I stayed in Hotel Sunland and this was during the vietnamese new year. Cheers.

thanks @pratpreneur - thatโ€™s very reassuring! Iโ€™d seen some info about bad connections, but I guess if you scope out quality, itโ€™s there. I donโ€™t mind paying extra. Iโ€™ve been places where thereโ€™s just no good connection unless youโ€™re in an office with high-speed and hotels wouldnโ€™t have it. thanks!

@taxico 8yr

i work out from HCMC a week out of every month.

i use skype (100 world minutes x 5 ms office 365 family users = 500 mins) + a 3G/4G prepaid data sim i get at the airport every time i fly in.

works a-ok on the cell phone with the sim inside. less reliable on my blackberry that hooks onto the vietel prepaid phone via wifi shared/mini hotspot.

voip (with an iphone app) through my regular cafe or hotel wifi (or any other free wifi hotspot) did not work well for me so i gave that up.

nothing more frustrating than being unable to communicate despite being โ€œon the phoneโ€ with the other guy.

skype also allows me to take/make incoming calls while on the move.

Thanks @kierenb123. I could make calls from a mobile phone using 3G or 4G, but I think VoIP would be better quality. I donโ€™t want to use regular landline or international mobile, as costs would be too high. From stats Iโ€™ve seen, mobile networks are worse than ADSL internet connections in HCM.

Hey @ericvanbuskirk,

I am currently running a virtual call centre using VoIP and I have been moving around for the past 12 months.

I have worked from Australia, Chiang Mai, Koh Phangan and the UK.

The only issues I had were in Koh Phangan where the internet cuts out every now and then, however, you can easily get a 4G sim card as a backup to the wifi wherever you may be working, this is fast and reliable enough for good quality VoIP calls.

Video calling (Skype, Facetime) may be a little worse for quality in the more remote areas.

Regards

@ericvan 8yr

thanks @kierenb123. I think youโ€™re mentioning Thailand. I think wireless is much worse in Vietnam. Iโ€™m working from the best quality co working space, but it closes when USA is working. So I must rely on ADSL connection from a broadband provider to a large apartment building. I just donโ€™t know if quality of service issues will make that poor. Even in usa itโ€™s a small problem.

funny thing is my connection from my Philippine office, in 2005, to USA was quite good when talk to people 1/2 way around the world via vonage. the exception was when the submarine cable from the IT city of the Philippines was severed! LOL. virtually no internet for a whole week. total disaster.

Hey @ericvanbuskirk. I was mentioning Thailand yes, perhaps check out if you can get 3G or 4G sim card, this can often be clearer than some of the wifi connections.

Other than that I guess it is waiting for Saigon to play catch up, even Koh Phangan has fibre optic now.

Good luck!

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 3yr 3 years ago  | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)
