Help me to come up with a better strategy to choose where to go next

by @nunoarruda6yr  | 9 comments

Iโ€™m a digital nomad with a goal of visiting as many different cities as possible.

I travel each month to a different city (with good weather) in a different country and I never repeat the same country in the same year for diversity (except when visiting home).

I choose where to go next by pinpointing the top cities from the nomadlist.com (which is constantly updated according to the weather, if Iโ€™m not mistaken) in a personal Google Map, I then see whatโ€™s the nearest country according to my current location and I plan everything 1 or 2 months ahead.

In December I always go home (Portugal) to spend time with my family and then in January I start all again.

Sometimes in order to get to the โ€œnearestโ€ pinpointed country I have to take 2/3 flights which can be expensive and time consuming. This is when I think I might not be making the best move.

Do you guys have any advice that might improve my strategy?

I like to pick a distant place I would like to visit.

Then I check on Google Earth (or in my mind) what are other cities on the shortest route.

Then I check on skyscanner (and low cost carriers and sometime land transportations) the cheapest routes available.

For exemple to go from GVA to Ljubljana I took a plane to Venezia, then a car to roadtrip around Trentino and Veneto, then a bus from Trieste.

$2k is economy class on Singapore Airlines from New York to Frankfurt to Singapore, then back to Frankfurt and finally to New York with several months stopovers in-between each leg so the price covers 4 flights. The whole timeline is from August 2016 through June 2017. A pretty good deal especially since SA economy is comparable to other airlinesโ€™ business class. Includes priority boarding, 2 checked bags (I need 1 checked bag just for my chefโ€™s knife kit and other supplies they wonโ€™t let me carry on the plane), preferred seat assignment, lounge access and other perks. Plus I get over 20k KrisFlyer miles that I can put towards future travel.

Wow, thatโ€™s cool. How/where do you book a single โ€œflightโ€ with multiple-month stop-overs?

@lia92556yr

I booked it directly on Singapore Airlines website as a multi-city trip and just entered the dates I plan to travel from one city to the next. You can choose to fly only that airline or open up the search to include their partners. You should also be able to choose different booking classes (economy, premium economy, etcโ€ฆ). Booking multiple flights all in advance is best if you know your travel plans, because youโ€™ll need to pay a fee if you change dates later if you select the lowest possible airfare (higher airfares usually waive the change fees). It also helps to know the airlineโ€™s major hubs. For example, I know Singapore Airlines to Asia connects through Frankfurt (Iโ€™m actually not staying in Frankfurt, but I can take the train or get a cheap flight to where I need to go in Europe). Iโ€™ll do the same when I arrive in Singapore - will stay there a week and then travel throughout Asia for a few months.

Iโ€™m trying a new strategy that seems to work well. I start from my home base in the US and fly to an inexpensive, central airport in Europe (wherever I get the best R/T fare), then travel via train or air within the continent before moving on to Asia and doing the same there, and then on to the next region (until I clear the Schengen visa limit of 90 days) or returning to Europe.

Using this method in 2017, I will be in Spain, France, Germany, Morocco, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, Romania, Estonia and Finland. I book the major legs (JFK > FRA > SIN > FRA > JFK) all at once and this time, all on Singapore Air and Lufthansa, then book cheap internal flights or train tickets as I go.

By only booking the long-haul legs in advance, I avoid change fees since Iโ€™m fairly committed to those travel dates anyway. My annual air/train budget is USD $3600 or $300/mo and I just booked the long-haul route for under USD$2000 so that leaves me a couple hundred $$ to travel between each country within the region. In future years, I can cash in frequent flyer miles to reduce the airfare.

I often use Adioso, I think skyscanner does the same thing - you can put in a general region and get all flight details. If I want to go to Europe from Australia, often I donโ€™t care that much what city I fly into. If I have to have stopovers, I try to make them a longer visit rather than a few hours at an airport too.

have you looked at flight special sites like secretflying.com to see if there are good deals you can take advantage of to reduce costs of flights?

I know SecretFlying, itโ€™s a nice resource, but it depends on me being lucky or not to find a deal from where I am or to where I wanna go.

I definitely need to pay more attention to SecretFlying though.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio8mo 7 months ago | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife9mo 8 months ago | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo9mo 8 months ago | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info1329mo 8 months ago | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara9mo 9 months ago | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

What's the best visa strategy for US citizen staying in Bali for 5-6 months?

by @nihilista6yr 6 years ago | 4 comments

From what Iโ€™ve researched I can get a Visa on arrival and then extend that by another 60 days. (Is it around $60-70 for the original plus extension?)

But what about if I would like to plan for staying longer - should I get the 60 day visa that I can extend for 120 days?

Also, what is the process for extending the Visa? Do I need to leave the country to do so? In the first scenario, with the 30 day VOA and addโ€™l 30 day extension, is it possible to stay longer by leaving and then coming back? Is there a limit for how many days one needs to leave the country and how many times this process can be repeated in any given time period (i.e. a year)?

Thanks very much for any help / advice / information!
