How do I make enough money to travel?

by @bruno_kinoshita | 6yr  | 14 comments

Hello, My nameโ€™s Bruno. Iโ€™m a Front-end Developer & UX Designer from Brazil.

I want so bad to dive into the Nomad Lifestyle. But Iโ€™m kinda fear that I canโ€™t make enough money. I donโ€™t know how much I need to save before start travel around the world.

I want to start traveling in June. For now, Iโ€™m trying to save money, like $10,000 and getting some good contacts to continue working as freelancers for them. Itโ€™s kinda difficult because I got stuck. Anxieties, fear, lostโ€ฆ :frowning:

Anybody can advice me? NY is my first stop.

Sounds like you have the right skills in actually finding your niche in the digital world. Your website skills, with that amount of money are quite enough, alongside a bold attitude. Try countries like Thailand, PI or Vietnam- everythingโ€™s ridiculously cheap. Good luck!

Hey if you are fearful of the finances etc why not start off with some remote working, Its definitely a good way to get into the lifestyle and then once you figure out how much you need (and have some money coming in regularly) in each place slowly transition into taking your own clients and building up your freelance business.
You definitely have some good skills which a lot of remote jobs require.

You can stay 3 months visa-free in Thailand! If I were you Iโ€™d hit Bangkok and stay there for a few months while you grow your location independant income. Bangkok is way more fun than Chiang Mai and is barely more expensive. With 10000$US you could live there reasonably well for half a year.

Hi, @Bruno_Kinoshita, Brazilian here too. I think everybody had good points here, Iโ€™d specially highlight two of them: Starting with a cheaper place and, specially, in a place with strong digital nomad community (yes, like Chiang Mai - itโ€™s amazing there).

About the Visa, plan that ahead always and get to know the places we can stay without prior Visa. Youโ€™ll be amazed with how many places we can stay up to 90 days without many more requirements than just having a Brazilian passport.

Feel free to contact me.
Have fun! And be open to good opportunities.

Depending on how long youโ€™ll be traveling, Iโ€™d also keep an eye on ticket prices. They tend to be super expensive from Brazil to the USA and Europe in June/July. This, plus the weather, is one of the reasons Iโ€™ll be traveling going to Chile this July.

Brother, Iโ€™m travelling the US right now and compared to Asia my wallet is getting decimated haha. I advise starting in NY straight away (Iโ€™m heading there end of April).

My suggestion is to follow the crowd and head to somewhere that has a strong digital nomad community like Chiang Mai. The community there is amazing and knowing that you have a support team really helps you feel safe (#peaceofmind). When I went there I made tons of close friends just from the meetups and the live chat.

Good luck! If you need any help DM me

I can advice you something: do not start a nomadic lifestyle trial in New York!
Youโ€™d be lucky to stay 3 months on 10K, and after that you will pretty much have to go back home.
I have lived in NY as a nomad for 4 years in a row, several month at a time, but I have way more money than you say youโ€™d save, and I earn enough to be able to do that. Otherwise, itโ€™d be an extremely risky move.

If you are from Brazil, Mexico wonโ€™t really be such a different place, but it certainly is beautiful, near and cheap, specially the Mayan Riviera. Although I wouldnโ€™t take the outcome of that first run as a definitive answer regarding nomadism.

You might try Spain; it is as cheap as Mexico now, and way, way more different than Brazil on so many levels. Even more, if you want to feel at home with the language, you have Portugal, which is very beautiful and cheap country. You can get by with 600-1000 Euro a month. Of course, thereโ€™s the visa issue, so plan ahead that as well.

The visa issue is a good point. Iโ€™d start with countries that donโ€™t require a visa. Luckily, there are many for Brazilians:

Dude, thanks! I really appreciate that.

Maybe I need to change my trial, and thatโ€™s whats Iโ€™m going to do. In a cheaper country I will have more time to set up my business and get more contacts around the world that I can work with.

Thanks a Lot man

If youโ€™re genuinely pretty skilled, and are reliable, youโ€™ll have no worries getting work for agencies which you can easily make a few grand a month with. Long-term you can then work towards whatever clients, work or other business you want knowing your costs will be met.

If youโ€™re worried about money, I strongly suggest that one of the most expensive cities on the planet NOT be your first stop. Why not start somewhere cheap where you donโ€™t have to stress as much about money and you can get used to the nomad thing? I started nomading as soon as I was making $600 USD/month regularly from freelancing and it was enough to live on in Mexico. Thereโ€™s a reason most DNs tend to flock to developing nations.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio | 4d 4 days ago | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife | 1mo 1 month ago | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo | 1mo 1 month ago | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 | 1mo 1 month ago | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara | 1mo 1 month ago | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok, Thailand by @germanrobert | 2mo 1 month ago | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

in Guatemala by @chasindreams | 2mo 2 months ago | 0 comments

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Ukraine Residency

I have a slightly above average US income which I can work remotely from paired with a $1000 a month income stream and more than enough to purchase a middle end Flat in Ukraine. Does anyone with knowledge of this process have any advice to acquire a reliable way to stay in the country?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough | 3mo 2 months ago | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 | 4mo 4 months ago | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.
