Places in Central or South America with a beach for remote working

by @mcdime | 4yr  | 5 comments

Im looking to make my first venture into nomad living this September and keep leaning back towards Bocas del Toro.

Does anyone have experience setting up shop there? Iโ€™m open to other warm weather surf towns as well

Starting a SaaS company that assists the operation of service based industries so being near some other SaaS people would be wonderful. (First time starting a tech company)

Continuing the discussion from Nomad Beach recommendations in central or South America:

Bocas is not ideal for a start up. The Wifi in most places is very slow and inconsistent. You may be able to get something different if you set up long term but if youre looking for a coworking space with decent wifi youll have to stay on the same island (Colon Island most likely but I dont know of any coworking spaces first hand). Boat taxis are required for any island hopping (usually around $4-10 each way). Surfing can be world class tho so it depends on what you truly want. Also expect Panama in general to be more expensive than most of the rest of Latin America. I spent about a month in Panama and it didnt do much to make me want to return.

There are plenty of surf towns that offer better wifi, equivalent weather/surf, and a cheaper standard of living.:

  • Puerto Escondido, Mexico
  • Sayulita, Mexico
  • San Juan Del Sur, Nica
  • Playa Colorado, Nica

You might check Coronado (Playa Coronado) in Panama about 1.5 hrs from Panama City accessible by bus from Albrook Mall/bus terminal.
Expat community (albeit lots of retirees). Thereโ€™s a golf resort and beach community. Not sure about surfing. Some people rent out their pads via airbnb or vrbo under Coronado Golf. Walking distance to the beach. Nice place, but quiet.

Hey, I currently live/work remotely in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. Belize is an AWESOME place with both jungle + Caribbean beach. Ambergris Caye has a coworking space, great nightlife and restaurants and Caribbean beach life. Let me know if you stop by!

I enjoyed staying in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and working at Skyloft coworking space.
Thereโ€™s also NomadLife in San Juan del Sur which is great.
Both are surf towns. Let me know if you want to know more.

I canโ€™t give you any direct info on Bocas, but having lived in small beach towns in Mexico and consulting/starting up a company, I can urge you to ALWAYS test your Wifi before committing to where you are going to live (or even buy your cup of coffee).

Check out the Speedtest app by Ookla

Also: Volaris and Interjet are offering big promos for flights from the states. Youโ€™ll need to connect thru Mexico City (and actually book your flights as two trips, one to Mexico City, another to Panama or your destination).

Good luck! Iโ€™m following this thread now, because Iโ€™m intrigued to know how Boca treats you (i.e. itโ€™s another destination of mine).

PS. I have heard really good things about El Tunco, in El Salvador, as being really good spot for WiFi, strong expat community, and EXCELLENT waves.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

in Guatemala by @chasindreams | 3mo 3 months ago | 0 comments

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough | 4mo 3 months ago | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Are restaurants, cafes and malls working in Mexico City taking into account COVID situation?

in Mexico by @thateverdmitriy | 5mo 5 months ago | 1 comment

I am planning to travel to Mexico City next weekend and stay for 7-10 days there. I wonder if cafes, stores and other places like these work? And if cafes work, do they work as usual or only for take away&delivery? Will be very thankful if someone can help here.

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint | 7mo 6 months ago | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Best place for solo UK traveller for surf, sun & working between Oct and Dec??

in Tenerife, Spain by @leojb | 7mo 6 months ago | 0 comments

Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.

Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??

Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.

Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.

Thanks a million. Much love.

Leo

Where should I set up my company as a remote worker?

by @beloruchka | 8mo 7 months ago | 7 comments

Iโ€™m looking for any recommendations for services or people others have used to get answers on the best place to set up their businesses based on their personal circumstances.

Leaning towards Singapore after a ton of research, but would really like some concrete advice before jumping in.

Appreciate it!

How do you ensure that you have good WiFi for working whilst travelling e.g. in places like India?

in India by @davda1546 | 10mo 10 months ago | 4 comments

We are hoping to travel later this year and we will be working remotely - how do you ensure you get good WiFi in places such as in India where the signal isn't always great? Do you have any tips on where to go/ what equipment you have to get?

Bali to focus on attracting remote workers when the island reopens for tourism

by @levelsio | 11mo 10 months ago | 0 comments

When reopening for tourism, Bali says it will focus on attracting remote workers to choose the island as their workplace:

"We will focus on a new pattern of how Bali is not just for leisure, but indeed to work in Bali as well"

What have been your biggest challenges working remotely in your team?

by @wanderer | 1yr 1 year ago | 2 comments

My interest in DN lifestyle started when half of our company have been taking 1 month for remote work @ Ko Samui. It was truly cool but we observed quite some communication challenges. Communication seemed just โ€œriskierโ€ when online.

What were your worst situations caused by misunderstanding while communicating online with your teammates? What do you do to avoid misunderstandings?

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 | 1yr 1 year ago | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

by @rose_davis | 1yr 1 year ago | 7 comments

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). Iโ€™ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but Iโ€™d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities Iโ€™m considering:

  • Quito, Ecuador
  • Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Cartagena, Columbia
  • Antigua, Guatemala
  • San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Fast/easily accessible internet
  • Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
  • Safe for women
  • Some sort of spiritual community (Iโ€™m also a yoga teacher)
  • Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? Iโ€™m also completely open to other recommendations.

Thanks!
Rose

What's the first step now that I can work remotely?

by @mariaplslourdes | 2yr 1 year ago | 4 comments

Hi everyone and nice to e-meet you!
finally, after so long I found a job that allows me to work remotely.
But now? Do you have any practical advice that I can use to approach this new world?
In particular, I have to put my tax situation in order, do you know a good tax advisor from whom I can ask for advice? (Iโ€™m Italian but I live in Franceโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how long it will beโ€ฆ) )
Beyond that, any advice is welcome.
Thank you!
Maria

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas | 2yr 1 year ago | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?
