by @mrwhite | 5yr  | 22 comments

Hello.

I am looking for doing about one month of solid work; I have previously worked out of Chiang Mai and I am looking for something simlar:

  • Good coworking place
  • Cheap rent
  • Good food

But in ideally in Europe.

In other words: What are good digital nomading places in Europe? In particular something that is not too dark and cold this of time year.

Hi All,
has someone been in Tallinn (Estonia)?, who can recommend where to find cheap places to rent (shared flats or entire flats even if they are small between 200 and 400 Euro/Month itโ€™s ok) or for staying like 2/3 months? It will be much appreciated!!

Hello! Iโ€™ve just arrived in Tallinn. Did you end up finding accomodation at this rate? How has your time in Tallinn been? Iโ€™m using AirBNB; my current accomodation is kinda expensive but the next booking is much cheaper, close to the rates you asked about. Madeline

Hi Madelaine!, yes, finally Iโ€™ve been there just one month in June. I found a place joining Accommodation in Tallinn group in Facebook and found a room for 250 EUR/month really well located 6 blocks from city center (Old Town). I really loved Estonia, it was such an amazing experience, Iโ€™ll definetly go back sometime!. Hope you can enjoy your time there, must be full of snow already!!

I am home based in Sofia at the moment. Good coworking places, cheap rent and good food is around, tho a bit snowy this time of year. But if you love snow sports, plenty of options a short drive a way for the weekends. Ask me anything, if you are interested.

There is a new, vibrant DN community around Sun and Co., a coliving and coworking space in Jรกvea, Spain, in the Mediterranean Coast. I think Jรกvea satisfies all your requirements: it is inexpensive, good food, the weather is great (18 degrees Celsius just today) and it is authentic, you get in touch with locals. Take a look!

Hi @edu - Weโ€™re looking for a Costa del Sol location (or within an hour of the southern Spanish coast) for most of Feb. I saw your mention of Javea & it looks pretty attractive. We like to be within walking of at least some services. Can you recommend any specific locations (or ones to avoid) in the area?
Thanks!

Hi @Fusse
I run a coliving space called www.Sun-and-co.com in Javea.
You can stay for a week or a month, and weโ€™ve got optical fiber (300up & 300down) + an awesome community of like-minded people.
If you need more info send an email to [email protected]
Weโ€™d love to see you in our house soon

Ooh, I second the Canaries - I arrived in Las Palmas yesterday and think Iโ€™m going to really enjoy it here (as long as I can find some accommodationโ€ฆ)

I was in Valencia this time last year and loved it, and I was in Malaga in November/December - opinion seems split on this but I really enjoyed it, mainly as I love art and it has loads of galleries, although it doesnโ€™t have a great nomad scene. But not a drop of rain in the 5 weeks I was there. Seville has a bit more going on but is inland obviously, though that wonโ€™t matter if youโ€™ve been in Chiang Mai. They are all cheaper than Barcelona, I think.

If you donโ€™t need a co-working space and would get by with just a high speed connection from your own apartment, Iโ€™d recommend some of Southern Spainโ€™s resort offerings. They are usually vacant and very inexpensive deals can be found for January/February. I spent January of 2014 in Alhama de Murcia, at this resort http://www.condadodealhama.eu/eng_index.php in a two bedroom apartment with heat/water/utilities included for 400 Euro. It was great and vacant like a ghost town, since hardly anyone was there except a few snow birds from England and some full timers, we really had the place to ourselves. Local food was inexpensive, the grocery store on resort was marked up of course. But for 400 Euros a month, it was super nice. We couldnโ€™t swim since it was still cold, but very sunny and pleasant. Just as a comparison, the next month we stayed in an apartment in Valencia (way better connected with public transport, awesome metro and tons more to do night life and on foot), but that was 800 Euro for the month (utilities and high speed wifi included) and the accommodations were not as nice or that new. Both had full furnished, including linens and fitted kitchens. Would love to be in Spain now, but we are spending 3 months in Oregon, and it hasnโ€™t stopped raining since mid December. :frowning:

We use every possible app, service and website. Youโ€™ve got to really hunt around, to find good deals.

In this instance, we found the property on Air B&B about 3 years ago, we stayed here before, then you can compare on VRBO, craigslist, habitaclia.com, airbnb, realestate long term rental sites, etcโ€ฆ

Our current apartment is in a resort, itโ€™s like a ghost town really. So many units unsold, and so many that are owned and empty. So you have tons of leverage on a furnished rental. We are paying 350 euros/month for everything EXCEPT electric. Since heat and everything uses electricity, we are projecting about 150 euros a month. So a total of ~$500/mo for a 3 bedroom furnished apartment is great. Internet is 10 mbps/2 mbps, so not great, but also not horrible. Itโ€™s enough to let the kids do their online schooling while I am still able to connect and get stuff done.

There are a number of resorts around Murcia with similar units on offer, search for the resorts like Covera, Condado de Alhama, etcโ€ฆ While you are there, you could spend 50k - 100k and pick up a unit yourself too.

Thanks @mule5! Sounds like we have a similar MO. We tend to book pretty last minute (not always intentional  ) & weโ€™ve scored some pretty decent deals through aribnb & VRBO typically. Occasionally Wimdu & longtermlettings.com. Off-season of course really helps.

Your resort sounds like a steal! The speed is our minimum but ok. Is it reliable/consistent?

And how far are you from a decently-serviced town, and what services are open at your resort at this time of year?

Thanks again for the input.

@Fussen - Youโ€™re welcome. Yeah, we are very low key, and this place fits the bill perfectly. It got slightly busier during Xmas, but still 99% empty. They say in the summer it gets much busier, but I am not sure how busy, this resort canโ€™t be 50% sold. (I am only guessing, havenโ€™t been here during the summer) Also, itโ€™s mostly foreigners here, not many locals, but there are some weโ€™ve met. Most foreigners are from GB.

I am sure you could probably get a similarly priced unit even last minute, since there are so many. I think any lower in price, people would rather not go through the trouble of renting it. 3 years ago, we got the same 350 euro, but it was a 2 bedroom and included the electric.

The network is fairly good, stable mostly. Last visit, we never had any down time, this time, during some bad rain, it was down. We were told that itโ€™s RF, but I canโ€™t imagine that being really the case. All the units have the same sat TV and network. 10/2 isnโ€™t terrible, I have the lowest end fiber at home 50/15, but this is totally manageable, no issues so far even with the tons of connected devices 3 kids + 2 adults have. So weโ€™ve only had that one issue in the past 12 days.

They all have towns near by, like 5 - 8 minutes by car. Murcia is the capital of the region and is 35 minutes from either of those two resorts I mentioned. The Med is about 15 mins away. As for services, everything is pretty much open at the resort, even the pools, although itโ€™s too cold to dip in, the kids have tried before. Golf is open, club house cafe/rest., sports center, tennis courts, soccer pitch, convenient store/bakery, pizza, ice cream, restaurants, etcโ€ฆ

You definitely need to have a car though, since youโ€™ll want to rejoin the Spanish community at some point.

The Canaries. They tick all of your boxes. Particularly Las Palmas. It has quite a few co-working offices. Rent and food are cheap. And itโ€™s never cold. Iโ€™ve been wearing shorts and sandals since I arrived in late November. And politically itโ€™s in Europe, although geographically itโ€™s much closer to Morocco.

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark | 6mo 5 months ago | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks

How to ship bikes from US to Europe?

by @ld | 6mo 5 months ago | 3 comments

Hello,
Iโ€™m preparing to travel again to Europe, but this time I want to bring our bikes. 2 road bikes. Iโ€™ll be traveling from USA to the Milan or Rome airport.

Iโ€™d appreciate hearing your thoughts, experience and tips on traveling with a bike. I plan on being fairly stationary with our location and staying in one spot for 2-3 months, then (hopefully train) to another spot for 3 months, etc. So itโ€™s the initial international flight Iโ€™m most concerned about. But realistically, I think a regional flight will be inevitable with the bikes, too.

I know a bike box will be huge and we will have to break down the bike, thankfully our bikes are fairly light weight. Iโ€™m expecting it to be a huge painโ€ฆbut I think the reward of having a good bike to roam around with will be invaluable. Especially since we will be staying in rural areas and donโ€™t want to rent a car.

General range of cost?

Anyone bring their bike and glad they did? โ€ฆWish they didnโ€™t?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

How do digital nomads pay tax?

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj | 6mo 6 months ago | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 | 7mo 6 months ago | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

by @rose_davis | 8mo 8 months ago | 7 comments

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). Iโ€™ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but Iโ€™d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities Iโ€™m considering:

  • Quito, Ecuador
  • Cuenca, Ecuador
  • Medellin, Columbia
  • Cartagena, Columbia
  • Antigua, Guatemala
  • San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things Iโ€™m looking for:

  • Fast/easily accessible internet
  • Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
  • Safe for women
  • Some sort of spiritual community (Iโ€™m also a yoga teacher)
  • Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? Iโ€™m also completely open to other recommendations.

Thanks!
Rose

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio | 9mo 8 months ago | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?
