Which Canary Island should I go to?

by @jammingsloth 9yr  | 11 comments

Itโ€™s getting cold! I would like to head to the Canaries for a bit come January, and Iโ€™m looking for recommendations.

Desired characteristics:
-good internet (10mb at the very least)
-not a tourist resort area
-accessible (no car required)
-donโ€™t need a party town, but not a geriatric town. Good hiking and outdoor activities.

Anyone have any town/city recommendations?

Iโ€™m really interested in heading to Gran Canaria for a couple of months from late Jan, but (as usual) Iโ€™ve left it late to book. Iโ€™m hoping to head to Las Palmas, but slightly wary of just turning up in January and expecting to get something, especially as my Spanish is basic at best! And whatโ€™s left on Airbnb now is out of my price range.

I appreciate nobody can say for definite, but are there decent odds of finding an apartment for a couple of months at this time? It is worth taking a risk?

Both Tenerife and Gran Canaria will give you what you ask for, minus the no-car requirement. You will feel the lack of a car or, at least, a bike.
Tenerife could be more interesting than Gran Canaria if you love outdoor activities, as it has the biggest volcano in Europe, that also happens to be the third-highest in the world, after Hawaiiโ€™s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
In Tenerife, the north of the island is very green (and very German), while the south is dry, touristy and very English.
You will find good internet on any of the islands, and mobile phones work well too.
Tenerife has the good beaches all located on the south, and the weather needed to enjoy them will be there too.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are proper cities, you wonโ€™t feel that you are in a small island near Africa.

The bus networks on both Gran Canaria and Tenerife look pretty comprehensive to me. If someone is (like me) used to and happy with relying on public transport to get around, then both islands look pretty ideal.

In Tenerife, the town of El Medano is nice, but tends to be windy. La Laguna is also nice and ticks most of the bullet points, but tends to be rainy and cooler in the winter (and even in the summer). Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not bad either, you do feel like in a big city, not exactly on an island.

In Gran Canaria, Las Palmas has everything you want, just makes sure that wherever you rent a place they have an ADSL connection and the Internet will be fast. We found a 3 bedroom apartment for 1 month by simply asking real estate agencies that we found on the streets of the city, it helps if you speak Spanish though.

I spent a month in Tenerife a couple months ago and had a great time. There is 300mbit internet in many places (the house I was staying had 100mbit), so finding places with high speed internet shouldnโ€™t be a problem. In general, the south is more touristy and the north is less. Depending what youโ€™re looking for there are also many small towns in the south which also may fit your bill of not a tourist resort area. I would highly recommend Santa Cruz de Tenerife (major city, no cars needed, bus connections anywhere you want to go) or if youโ€™d like to be outside of major cities, the town of Peurto De La Cruz is on the coast, accessible and is cheaper to stay than Santa Cruz.

@Ani and @gsalgado thanks for the recommendation. How did you find your housing? At this point, I suppose since winter-time is โ€œhigh seasonโ€ Airbnb seems overpriced and limited. Any other good month-month options for apartments less than 1000euros/month?

Actually I have found cheap accommodation using Airbnb. Iโ€™m renting a room rather than the whole place, but itโ€™s only ยฃ210 a month, and itโ€™s very nice and located in a beautiful historical neighbourhood. I booked it in early August but will not be there until winter, so perhaps thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve got a good deal. There is another thread on the site though where a site member who is from the Canaries says that you get the best deal by waiting until you arrive and renting a flat from an estate agent. In that case you could just begin by booking something for a week or so and then look around after youโ€™ve arrived. I had been especially interested in Tenerife, and because the Airbnb offering there really is too expensive (at least for me based on what was available at that time), I changed my mind and decided to go to Las Palmas, but I may try again another year but go through an estate agent instead of Airbnb.

I got a room in a flat share, through segundamano.es/pisocompartido.com, but those are usually for long-ish term (min 3 months). Iโ€™d check them out anyway as you might be able to find something. Failing that, as Ani said, you might be able to get a good deal through a local real estate agent

I stayed in Tenerife for over a month. I rented a 6th century home, owned by the sweetest old woman.

I stayed in the town of Los Silos. You can walk to several amazing beaches (15 - 30min). And you can catch a bus to bigger towns.

It is quiet. Not too many tourists. But there are so many incredible hikes that start from this town (well, more like a village.)

Here is a photo of where I stayed:

I can give you the contact info for the owner. But do understand that both him and his family do not speak Englishโ€”at all.

The WiFi was good enough for me to do some dev work at the time. No recollection if it was 10mbit or not, but it was much faster than other places Iโ€™ve stayed in the area (canโ€™t expect fast internet on islands like these.)

-Aaron

P.S. I negotiated the price down to somewhere between 700 - 800 euros for the month. Itโ€™s a newly remodeled studio with loft, built from volcanic rock. One of my best rental experiences ever.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone up to explore some city which is kinda virus safe?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @germanrobert 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello World!

I'm an experienced Digital Nomad and after being in Lockdown in Bangkok and Germany for one year I would like to team up with someone to visit a new place. Or just doing some exchange about what destinations would be interesting currently.

I take the virus seriously and still I think we can still be able to take our life in our own hands. So I'm aiming for cities/countries which are not in full lockdown, are not too complicated about immigration (I'm looking at you Thailand, your state quarantine costs like 1k USD and is basically a prison) and is also rather safe regarding the virus. I tend to stick for rather big cities and like culture. I'm not a beach or nature person. I'm pretty flexible about the money topic.

If you're American but live in Guatemala, do you still count as American for travel purposes?

What I mean is, for example, since most of the EU has banned Americans, if I live in Guatemala and will be traveling FROM Guatemala to the EU, could I get in? Or does the ban count for all Americans regardless of where they live?

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Is there a map of countries open for travel now?

in Russia by @vernon99 4yr 4 years ago  | 8 comments

I have two passports from different countries and am trying to understand where can I travel now. Is there a publicly available map of countries open for visitors by passport country that I can use to see what are my options? I was pretty sure such a thing should exist, but cannot easily find any.

Maybe at least there're maps for specific passports? Mine are Russian and American.

If there's no such thing, I'd be down to build one, let me know if interested to collaborate :)
