We just arrived in Cadiz, the town of Rota. Weโ€™re paying $1500/month for a three bedroom, two bath condo with a secure parking garage and pool about 3 minutes walk to the beach. Every window has beach views. Itโ€™s quiet here, very few people speak english. Not a lot of cafes to work in but the apartment has wifi and cable TV. I think thereโ€™s more DNโ€™s in the town of Cadiz, I hopeโ€ฆ

I suppose that at leats you have some preferences about the weather, do you like the warms days or do you prefer rainy weather? Depends on that, you can choose between south or noth of Spain. Do you like big cities or medium large?

Just landed in Madrid a few weeks ago and love it so far. Itโ€™s a chill big city with plenty to do without it being overwhelming. Not too crowded, friendly people, beautiful city and pretty affordable as well. If youโ€™re planning on staying for a few months, you wonโ€™t be bored here

Granada. Itโ€™s beautiful, inexpensive (you get a free tapas with the purchase of any drink!), the Sierra Nevada mountain range is spectacular and far outweighs the benefits of living close to a beach, IMO. Clean, modern but authentic with a good assortment of tourists and expats.

Iโ€™m from Valencia and I think it has everything you need: Not too big not too small, A little startup scene, cheap rental, accessible and easy to move, beach, real Paellas, culturally rich, good weather and the best thing, itโ€™s super close to Javea where you can visit our coliving space https://sun-and-co.com/
Good luck!

You cannot really go wrong in any city in Spain. Much depends on the weather you want, your budget, how cosmopolitan you want it. Barcelona is of course the darling of Nomads but can be way too crowded much of the year. Valencia is an alternative and has better weather. Malaga or Granada are good spots too, then you have the Canaries if you want year round summer. I could go on and on! Maybe give some clues as to what you are looking for e.g. need to be by the ocean, smaller cities etc?

Thank you so much. Being by the ocean would be amazing. Obviously I not looking to blow my budget. At the same time I do want to be able to get a proper apartment if I am there for a month or more. I am afraid to commit to a location that is not good because I do not know the area. But at the same time, that is why we go! because we want to experience a new place

My honest opinion is that if you go for a place that doesnt have many foreigners, you might feel isolated in Spain. The Spanish tend to have close knit social circles that might be hard to breach as an outsider. Thatโ€™s my experience of living in smaller, less cosmopolitan cities, but that might just be me!

On the basis Iโ€™d be looking at Seville, Granada, Malaga, Valencia, Alicante or Barcelona. Madrid is great, but you are a long way from the sea and itโ€™s expensive.

San Sebastian is cool, especially if you like a surf, but it is probably more expensive than anywhere I have mentioned.

I have spent a fair bit of time in Valencia and it is a good balance between being international and provincial. Just avoid Fallas festival as itโ€™s crazy busy and most expats escape for the week!

April in Spain. Where to go besides Canary Islands

in Spain by @rynesweeney | 2yr 2 years ago | 4 comments

So I head to Barcelona in a week for the next 4. I am reading some stuff online. I want to wing it and ask around when I get to Barce. But what I see online I may just spend the open three weeks I have in the Canary islands. The year round surfing and reasonable cost of living sounds great especially spending the first three months of 2018 on the beaches in Central America.

I fly out of Madrid the second week of May. I dont want to spend more than a couple days in Madrid. I had a week there last year. So if anybody could shed some insight based on their experiences that would be most bodacious.

For those who are still reading here are some interests of mine:

  • Hiking and outdoors activities in general.
  • Surfing/beaches
  • Food (this should be higher on this list actually).
  • Smaller and lesser known cities are ideal.

Thanks for any and all the help peoples.

See you in the forum, Ryne

Tips for nomads in Granada, Spain?

Hi everyone. Iโ€™ve just moved to Granada in Andalucia to live with some friends I met in Mexico. Planning on staying a few months and then seeing where the wind takes me, but in the meantime, I wanted to know if there are any fellow nomads around, or if anyone has any tips for coworking spaces/cafes? Thanks in advance!

Suggestions for somewhere to spend Jully in northern Spain?

in Spain by @jb510 | 3yr 3 years ago | 6 comments

Iโ€™m looking for somewhere to spend July in northern Spain. (Not that it matters but June weโ€™re in Paris, August in Porto).

Iโ€™ve spent time in small Italian villages and loved the experience. Iโ€™m hoping to find something like that but in coastal Spain, I just donโ€™t know the area at all yet. Suggestions?

Somewhere roughly in or between Galicia and Bilbao. Somewhere walkable to a half dozen small resturants/cafes/etcโ€ฆ

Can you get an NIE number while working in Spain for a UK company?

in Spain by @sabolmm | 4yr 3 years ago | 1 comment

Has anyone stayed in Barcelona longer than 3 months as a nomad?

I realise UK citizens have to apply for a NIE number if they are staying longer than 3 months in Spain. But can you actually get an NIE number while working in Spain for a UK company?

My company is registered in the UK so I will be remote working from Spain, donโ€™t want to setup as a freelancer or sold trader in Spain as it will only be a temporary pit stop for 3-6 months.

What's the digital nomad scene like in (Las Palmas de) Gran Canaria

in Las Palmas, Spain by @repat | 4yr 3 years ago | 6 comments

Hi,

so Iโ€™ve heard many great things about the Canary Islands but only from people who are not digital nomads. Iโ€™ve been on Tenerife in February 2011 and 2012, but only as a tourist (and with a student budget living at a friends house, so very different experience) and I saw a lot of old people. People say the same about Gran Canaria, especially in the winter, since a lot of the German and British retirees overwinter there.

Everything I read about especially the biggest city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is more or less about the city, the food, the beaches, the weather, the nature and so on but less about the people. I know Iโ€™d have to learn Spanish to speak to the locals (and I want to). I want to go somewhere at beginning of next year and LPA is on the top of my list. After my Tenerife experience and everything I read Iโ€™m sure I will like the location itself but itโ€™s never fun if youโ€™re somewhere alone for too long. Maybe the people who live(d) there can share their experiences about the digital nomad scene, or more specifically: How about the international crowd, are there a lot of people from say โ€ฆ mid 20s to mid 30s that are meeting up regularly for leisure (not work/tech related meetups)?

Has anyone tried to apply for a non-lucrative residence visa in Spain?

in Spain by @i_am_aileen | 4yr 3 years ago | 29 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m planning on moving to Spain and Iโ€™d like to connect with those who have tried to apply for this special type of long-term visa called as โ€œnon-lucrative residence visaโ€.

Going from what Iโ€™ve researched so far, itโ€™s a good option for us nomads (more so: business owners) to stay longer in Spain (one only needs to prove steady stream of income of at least EUR 2.2K per month and that you should NOT work for Spain โ€” so letโ€™s say having a U.S. company and staying in Spain is fine).

So : my concerns right now revolve mainly on anyoneโ€™s experiences with applying for this type of visa. How difficult was it? How long did it take you?

Also, Iโ€™m wondering about how I can secure a rental space for a year if my lease depends on the approval from the embassy. Iโ€™m also wondering if Valencia is a good place to stay in?

What are the best ways to find an apartment in Barcelona?

in Barcelona, Spain by @tylertringas | 4yr 3 years ago | 15 comments

Lots of nomads in and headed to Barcelona. Letโ€™s create a central place for resources, guides and sites for finding an apartment.

Iโ€™m headed there in April for 1-3 months (argh, Schengen!). So far Craigslist and Spotahome seem useful. What else is there?

Also any thoughts on neighborhoods would be great here. Right now Iโ€™m looking at Gracia which seems to be the spot. Probably avoid Barrio Gotico and Barceloneta due to masses of tourists. Iโ€™ve heard some good things about El Bornโ€ฆ thoughts?

Where to Register Complaints Against Businesses in Barcelona?

in Barcelona, Spain by @joutazo | 4yr 4 years ago | 1 comment

Long story short, my friends and I flew with Vueling and they lost our luggage. Theyโ€™ve done nothing so far except ignoring the problem. Theyโ€™ve failed to give us any kind of status on the luggage or offer any kind of compensation. Some of us even had our work laptops in our bags. Itโ€™s been five days with no response. Several times when weโ€™ve contacted them, theyโ€™ve hung up the phone on us. Itโ€™s been a terrible experience, and since we canโ€™t get them to do anything reasonable through their normal customer support channels, Iโ€™d like to escalate it by filing a formal complaint with some sort of government or legal entity that helps hold businesses accountable. The only problem is that I donโ€™t know who to report it to in Barcelona/Spain. I speak good enough Spanish to file a claim, but since I donโ€™t know what that sort of entity is called in Spanish, Iโ€™ve been having trouble finding where to do so.

TL;DR Where can I file consumer complaints against a company with the government or a legal entity in Barcelona or Spain?

Is anyone in Tenerife? I'm moving there for at least 6 months

in Tenerife, Spain by @andrea3018 | 4yr 4 years ago | 9 comments

Hello Nomads,
is anyone in Tenerife at the moment? Iโ€™m moving there from the 1st of August and not getting out of it for at least 6 months.
Iโ€™m going to stay in Puerto De La Cruz.
Do any of you has ever been there and do you recommend this city to me? Or should I look for an apartment elsewhere in Tenerife?
Also, how do you find cheap long-term houses there? I would love one with a private pool.

Thanks,
Andrea
